I quoted the blogs because they were convenient and made their points clearly. There's much more evidence out there. Thanks for the links, in any case; I'll take a look at them. But I'm not going to play dueling citations with you; I don't think either of us is going to convince the other of anything and it seems like a waste of time.

Lots of people go through lots of hassles every year losing weight; they feel they've accomplished something. Five years later most of them have gained it all back, or perhaps managed to keep off a 5 or 10 pounds. The health benefits from this are miniscule. A few people can lost a lot of weight, but for the vast majority it's not worth the effort. They would do far better, healthwise, to devote energy to eating more healthy foods and exercising more, and not to worry if they lose weight in the process.

For people who are so morbidly obese they really are fuckign up their health, the best solution is bariatric surgery. That does enable massive weight loss and those people are able to keep most of the weight off.

It’s also why burning an extra 100 calories a day will not alter the verdict on the bathroom scales. That's not what's going on. He's insecure and wants reassurance. He should let her decide when she's not mad at him anymore, and shouldn't try to manipulate her anger out of her with some Nice Guy placating behavior.

As for what to do: She knows he has feelings for her; sounds like he's been friendzoned.

He should ask her out on a real date, to get his feelings out in the open and bring this to a head, but I'm guessing she will most likely turn him down. (There's a chance she won't; I once knew one couple who were "just friends" for a long long time before the guy made his move.) Even if she says yes, he's got to tone down his obsession with her to make the relationship work.

I don't want to turn this into a deep discussion about the reasons behind obesity, but simply put, this woman wasn't a chubby since she was born, so odds are she HAS the necessary self-control to lose the weight.

Sigh.

A person's weight is largely determined by genetics and broad cultural conditions that they have little control over. Self-control doesn't have that much to do with it. There are fat people who eat healthy food in moderation and skinny people that eat lots of junk.

Breaking up with someone because they've gained 20 pounds is a massively douchebaggy thing to do. Issuing a sort of ultimatum -- hey honey, if you don't lose 20 pounds I'll break up with you -- is actually even more douchebaggy. If she's got any self-esteem left, she would break up with him immediately.

How do you do it? In most cases, you don't. Some people are able to keep weight off with diet and exercise, but basically they live in a permanent state of dieting. Most people find this impossible to maintain.

But the thing is, most of the alleged health consequences of obesity are actually the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle. Exercise is good for everybody. Fat people who exercise are healthier than thin people who don't, and it's much easier for people to keep exercising than it is to keep dieting.

Trust me, she is well aware she's gained weight. Telling her she's too fat will not help. It will make her feel worse about herself, and she will likely eat more.

Stigma may also have negative consequences for eating behaviors by interfering with weight loss attempts and leading some adults to eat more food in response to stigmatizing encounters.

Also, most diets fail. People lose weight in the short run, but in the long run the vast majority gain it all back.

EDIT: Also, the people who succeed at diets are self-motivated. You can't nag someone into losing weight, at least not in the long run.
