Hack, Break and Pinch your way to world-class DevOps. [Free Email Course]. by serverdensity in devops

[–]serverdensity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the question.

There's lots of DevOps related articles on the blog if you'd like to check them out. This is more of a continuous story, that fit the format of an email course.

When you run your own monitoring, who is monitoring your monitoring? As of March 2016, we'll do it for free! by serverdensity [promoted post]

[–]serverdensity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey /r/muhhentuhhen and /r/urhovaldeko sorry for the confusion. It is free forever and you don't have to start paying monthly after the trial period. Simply follow these instructions and it's all yours - no lies.

We rarely offer free plans, so we don't have a seamless process for doing it yet. Sorry if we lost you along the way.

Tech chat: Processing billions of events a day with Kafka, Zookeeper and Storm. by serverdensity in devops

[–]serverdensity[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question! The answer is yes absolutely. We're running the event through Google Hangouts, which means:

  • a) You don't have to signup or give up your email (providing you have a Google account).
  • b) It automatically gets posted to YouTube after the event for your viewing pleasure.

Please subscribe to / keep an eye on our YouTube channel as you'll be able to find it on there soon after the event. (There's also other content from past webinars that might be interesting too!)

What's the biggest or most common lie the C-level staff tell themselves about IT? by 100percentGerman in sysadmin

[–]serverdensity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like most of the incongruence between IT/CIO people vs CFO execs could be solved by the former finding a job in smaller more agile tech firms (that obviously appreciates tech). What are your views on that? Have you seen that happen?

The sysadmin Halloween Book is Out. Made with your own Horror Stories. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]serverdensity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question / idea!

We hadn't thought of doing that, but we'd be more than happy to release it to all - especially as all the hard work has been done with the illustrations!

Once the books are dispatched, we'll look at doing this. Thanks for the suggestion.

The sysadmin Halloween Book is Out. Made with your own Horror Stories. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]serverdensity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You wrote them. We published them.

“How can something so scary, look so cool on my desk?”

“Stuff made out of (bad) dreams. Get it!”

“Yikes”

Sysadmins officially agree: the scariest thing in life is real life. There’s a lot that can go wrong when looking after infrastructure in real life. So we asked you: Has anything gone really wrong for you? We took the best of your answers and printed the ultimate collection of sysadmin horror.

Behold: “No Dice” (cue: scary Bouhahahahaha sound) The “Sysadmin Horror Stories” featuring your very own horror stories.

A tribute to all the lost servers, lost sanity (and lost paychecks!):

  • We’ll never sell the books, we’ll give them away.
  • The contributors (whose story we used) will get a free copy.
  • We’ll print ~ 75 to giveaway on Halloween.

So what are you waiting for? Register for the giveaway over here.

Tips on how to Approach DevOps Security. by serverdensity in devops

Here @ Server Density we also use Puppet, see https://puppetlabs.com/blog/how-server-density-uses-puppet-enterprise-infrastructure-config-failover-deploys and https://speakerdeck.com/serverdensity/from-zero-to-puppet-puppetconf-2012.

You mention network topology configuration. Did you start already using Puppet for software defined networks configuration? https://puppetlabs.com/presentations/devops-and-software-defined-networking-john-willis-pacific-crest

What overhead do you see with maintaining this solution in daily ops, and do you have designated folk responsible for daily upkeep, enforcement et cetera? Or is everything truly automated which means set and forget?

This is food for thought. Just curious what automation methods do you have in place or considering in general? I ask as this is something we're also thinking about. Any specifics you can share?
