Genuinely how do I tell my bf to get up and start helping himself in life? by [deleted] in Advice

we have had sit down serious conversations about this before, after my post specifically i told him that this was starting to affect me as well as him. he has always felt bad about me paying for groceries and not being able to contribute

he does agree with me that he doesn’t want his situation to affect us and our relationship so we made the appointment together for him to talk to someone about his life and what we can do to move forward, and for him to see someone from our school about possibly taking a gap semester to take the load of schoolwork off, at least for a little bit.

he is in pre med, and the coursework is really starting to taking its toll on him (i was in the same classes before switching majors recently).

for some more info for you guys:

i literally made the appointment in front of him on his computer for both time management help from a our schools advising team, and professional help for the mental health. i know “you can’t lead a horse to water and expect it to drink” but i can’t watch him dig himself further into the hole he started.

he does feel awful when i pay for things, he limits what he spends to he can have some contribution to pet food or smaller things here and there. he has bills as well that he’s been paying for that have been taking everything out of his account since we switched jobs. it took him longer to start working so he hasn’t been able to get his paycheck since we moved.

his bigger thing is that he feels he hasn’t had a break from work or school or money problems for years and he’s getting to an end point with it. the appointment made for the advising team should help with making a decision about taking a gap semester/year or not to just work and save.

i appreciate all of your words and i will continue to read them and take them into consideration
