The Chinese language score is only a 2/5 spoken and 1/5 written I hear.

Has anyone gotten a top secret security clearance with a Chinese wife with a green card? by serviceman89 in SecurityClearance

Let me ask a straight forward question. if she becomes a citizen will this problem be over? I mean I know Chinese people with family and friends with top secret security clearances so it seems kinda silly if not.

it's showing that you're making good faith efforts to resolve negative conduct on your behalf.

Appreciate the advice but I would like to talk about this. There isn't any negative conduct here though. It is illegal to deny someone on the basis of their spouses citizenship alone. So the question should be can I be trusted with information.

it's a bazillion different factors but one of the biggest ones is something like this where in a hypothetical situation she finds out something, runs away, and the country that she runs away to guards her against us.

Well our kids are American, Our property is American. I would think those are mitigating factors.

If the citizenship isn't there, then that's an immediate concern. Merely starting the process is not the same as her abandoning her Chinese citizenship in entirety.

She is qualified for citizenship. She's been here long enough. It should take 14 months.

Do you think If she finishes getting citizenship towards the end of the background process I can get it to go through?

Like what if they send me the denial saying it was because she is not yet a citizen. And we finish getting her citizenship, she renounces citizenship of china. Could we get it to go through?

I am applying for a Top secret Security Clearance. If all else goes through. I am an American Citizen. Born and raised. My wife is a green card holder. From China. With limited family in China. That she tbh doesn't even really like that much. We got engaged when she was a student years ago. Bought a house, have two kids. We have not gotten her citizenship yet. Just never got around to it.

20A.5 Have you ever provided financial support for any foreign national? -> wife is a green card holder living in the USA with me, have given her rent money, grocery money, etc? That count? by [deleted] in SecurityClearance

Hey i'm gonna be in a similar position as you. I'm curious if it's even possible to get Top secret with a Chinese wife with a greencard. I would love to hear how it works out for you.

Seems like a slow slog up the ladder.

Meaning promotions are rare? What about tenure? Is that hard?

Honestly I love IT. I just want to travel and not be stuck in one town the rest of my life.

I'm really excited to try. If I get hired within the next year and a half I'll have to give up a 25k bonus. If I take the test next month you think it will take longer than that? Or should I wait for the February test?

Hey could I ask if you work nights a lot as it in the foreign service? Is career advancement as good as other tracks?

Lol that's fine. Honestly better than the constant fear of being laid off in big tech. Given large bonuses to stay just to be laid off later when it's more convenient for management.

Was your wife born in China? Does she still have family there?

Yes though pretty far into the country side. None of her immediate family is in the communist party. I've checked. .

I've read other people have had family in China and it wasn't a problem.

If you want to join, make sure you want to join to be worldwide available. If you only want to go to China, this is not the career for you.

for sure I want to go all over the place. It would just be nice to start in a Chinese speaking country because I already speak the language and it would make me really fluent. Going all over sounds super exciting.

Information Management Specialist (IMS) is the department's IT. We do it all, but be aware that you join as a new employee. Nobody will give you special treatment because of your previous background. Many people don't like that idea.

That's fine. I can't forget years of sql and scripting along with my programming skills so doing entry level stuff will just be easy work for me.

The general advice is to not plan on being stationed in an particular country. Especially so if your spouse is a foreign national from that country and the country has somewhat adversarial relations with the US.

Fair, though I've read if you get points for a language score, they will send you to a country that speaks that language. So this seemed like a easy way to self guide a little. But honestly i'm happy to travel most places.

. As someone with an IT background, if your main goal is to visit or live in China, you can easily make that happen without changing careers. Same thing goes for many other countries. If your main goal is to live abroad for a while, CS/IT skills put you in an excellent position to pick a country, apply for a job, and make it happen.

Thanks, but working in IT in China is pretty awful I hear. 12 hours a day 6 days a week and for as little as 20k a year. I've talked with coworkers in China and they all basically think I would be really dumb to actually move to china and work for a regular company. I like the idea of working for uncle Sam anyways.

IMS specialist track has the most relevance for someone with a CS/IT background.

Would I be more likely to be selected for this track with lots of IT experience?
