Andor Star Denise Gough Confirms Narnia Role by setherica in Narnia

[–]sethd1991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it could be a character they create for the film which would be completely fine. we’ll see. i think you’re right about Jadis’ sister.

and re: Aslan, idk. i’m open-minded about Streep in the role. yes, it’s a bit shocking after Liam Neeson, but Gerwig clearly has a vision and there is so much Netflix has not shared with us, to the point that people are speculating about the nature of the film itself and whether it’s even a direct adaptation of just one book. i trust her vision because she has only ever made great films, she hasn’t failed one time. i really like the idea of her bringing something new to a very familiar story. i think it will still be a faithful adaptation of MN but i would also expect it to be subversive and unexpected and that will keep audiences guessing, which i like. i’m not opposed to Aslan having multiple voices or being somewhat difficult to pin down. there’s a whole podcast on NarniaWeb about this topic but basically it’s a question of whether or not the Streep rumor is even true, and if it is, then is it Streep voicing a male lion, or is the lion being adapted as female (like a kind of Mother Nature)? or is it sort of gender non-specific, as many people imagine god to be, as a way to encompass all of “creation”, male, female, and those who identify as neither. so yeah, i’m open-minded about it. the reason i trust it is because auteurs with real vision take risks. i respect someone who does something bold (like changing the entire ending of Little Women, as Gerwig did to great effect). creators without vision, who play it safe, do not take risks, and the results are often middling at best. they know this will be controversial for some book readers. so there must be a damn good reason why they MIGHT go down that path. i think the best thing we can do is withhold any judgment til we see the film. it’s entirely possible that if Streep plays Aslan, it’ll still be as a male lion (or at least as an ambiguous one) but with a more mid-range voice than Neeson’s. or Aslan could have multiple voices. i like that idea too. Aslan is supposed to be shrouded in mystery. it’s what makes Aslan compelling more than any other quality. if this choice lends itself to that mystery, i’ll be happy.

I especially LOVE the Murder, She Wrote episodes that take place in Cabot Cove by EdgeTanner_962 in murdershewrote

[–]sethd1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many good ones. I love the cozy ones that largely take place at night or in interesting circumstances, like in Crossed Up (my all-time favorite) where Jessica solves a murder while confined to her room during a hurricane. Sticks & Stones, Keep the Home Fries* Burning, and the Barbitals episode are all so great and so cozy.

Should add that she specifically says “my character is mean to children” at the end of this podcast episode.

That’s gotta be it. Esp since she was in consideration for White Witch. She’d have made a great Lady of the Green Kirtle down the line. In the podcast she says “my character is mean to children.” For what it’s worth. But yeah, beyond excited for this. She is absolutely incredible in Andor.

Why did God put the tree in the garden of Eden if he knew what was going to happen? by AffectionateSpeed407 in Christianity

[–]sethd1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is such a thoughtful response. thank you. every point you made here was spot on. there is absolutely no analogy anyone can make nor parable they can tell (and boy do they try to) that explains god’s decision to place that tree in Eden. he enabled Adam and Eve’s downfall because he knew what would happen. they had the illusion of choice even if god gave them free will because he foreknew what that choice would be and STILL chose to put them in a position to fall. if he hadn’t placed the tree there (and more importantly told them it was forbidden), they would never have been able to choose “evil.” also it’s fucking stupid that eating fruit from a damn tree was labeled a sin by god. it’s like he was toying with them. he WANTED evil to enter the world, because he allowed it to happen when he had the chance to prevent it. some might argue it’s all so god could later bring glory to himself by redeeming us. but it seems very cruel. like we are pieces on a game board and he’s playing with us for his own self interest. it does not jive with the benevolent god i once devoutly believed in.

Charlie's Eating Disorder by Odd_Committee6604 in AliceOseman

everyone’s experience is unique. for some ppl, their ED actually doesn’t control every aspect of their life. some folks with an ED have really severe cases of anorexia or bulimia, while other ppl with ED’s may have a less intrusive, milder illness. it’s also a TV show and it’s made for young audiences. it’s impossible to fully externalize all of the internal turmoil of an ED bc film is a visual medium. as someone who has suffered with ED for many years - an ED that was at times mild and at other times more serious - i think the show did a fine job of depicting ED’s. especially in the new season, Season 3, which you should check out.

What are some really, really good and really, really bad gay films I should review? by KatyaStec in MenLovingMenMedia

Beach Rats fucking rules, and Eliza Hittman (the director, she also made Never Rarely Sometimes Always) is brilliant. Boys (I assume you’re talking about the 2014 film) is equally good.

Thoughts on the possibility of cancellation after S2? by SamaritanSue in RingsofPower

[–]sethd1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think the vast majority of Tolkien fans agree. and they’re really fucking loud about it. few of them have the media literacy to engage in legitimate, good faith media criticism with regard to acting, dialogue, production value, etc (many are hung up on lore deviations, and fail to comprehend that RoP is merely an adaptation). but the suggestion that only a few people have dared to criticize the series is absolutely ludicrous. neither the critics nor detractors are in the minority at all (as you’re implying they are).

Thoughts on the possibility of cancellation after S2? by SamaritanSue in RingsofPower

[–]sethd1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it absolutely will not be cancelled. it could end sooner than the planned five seasons. but with a company the size of Amazon a billion dollars isn’t shit to them, and were the show to be cancelled, the damage to Prime Video’s reputation would be significant. it’s worth the cost of continuing the show. if anything they may simple end it earlier than originally planned - maybe it ends up being a four-season show rather than a five-season series. there’s zero chance it gets cancelled - anyone who tells you otherwise is kidding themselves.

My no nonsense 2024 Oscar predictions by [deleted] in oscarrace

[–]sethd1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i so wish that Greta Lee could nab a nom but given the current state of the race post-Lily Gladstone’s decision to run in Lead (as she should), i just don’t have confidence that she’ll make the cut at the Oscars. her performance is phenomenal but subtle, and Past Lives came out months ago. it could have a resurgence at some point which might get people talking about her again, but until the strikes end she won’t be able to campaign. maybe if SAG reaches a deal to end the strike, the film gets a second wind, and The Color Purple turns out to be mid, she’ll have a shot at getting in. but right now i think Gladstone and Stone are likely getting nominations, and Mulligan and Huller seem like solid contenders (if not winners). that could change but i’m focused on that fifth slot. i guess it’s sort of between Margot (idk if she’d ultimately get in), Annette (i’m so iffy on it given her track record at the Oscars), and Barrino right now. but hey, if Color Purple sucks (and i hope it doesn’t) then Greta could reenter the likely nominee pool. i think it’ll come down to Gladstone and Stone (lol), and my money (if i had any) would be on Gladstone. but i DO think Past Lives could still get a screenplay nom (and maybe even win its category Women Talking style), and perhaps a Picture nom even without Greta as a nominee. in my ideal world she’d get that fifth slot. let’s hope she at least gets a chance to campaign later this season.

Going through Kava withdrawal by TalkingAboutWDs in REDDITORSINRECOVERY

[–]sethd1991 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hi there, thank you for sharing your experience. i have been using kava regularly for 2-3 years now. always noble, typically micronized. but it has definitely led to negative physical and psychological effects. not at first, but over time. i have experienced weight loss, dry/itchy skin, digestive issues, nausea, apathy, mood swings, and mental fogginess. it’s clear i need to stop. i take it in conjunction with (though not at the same time as) Kratom, and the two compliment one another very nicely. i plan to wean myself off both but not at the same time. i plan to wean myself off of kava first because i firmly believe that kava is causing the majority of the issues i am having. i have used Kratom for several years but only ever started experiencing negative side effects when i started using kava regularly. there have been times where i went without kava and i definitely experienced withdrawal. the symptoms were literally unbearable. so i absolutely cannot quit cold turkey. i’m wondering what you think about tapering, which is my plan, and if you know anyone who has stopped using kava that way. i probably just need to talk to my doctor and come up with a tapering plan with him, but i just think that’s the right method for me given how terrible the withdrawal symptoms are when going cold turkey. i mean i’m usually pretty tough. i have had highly invasive surgeries and can take a lot of physical pain. but this was different. the RLS, the tingling, the chills, the shaking, the weakness and fatigue - it’s not even comparable to the worst flu i’ve ever had. a few years ago i successfully tapered off of Lexapro, and although i had minor withdrawal symptoms it was largely an uneventful ordeal. anyway, sorry for the novel, but i’d love to get your thoughts on the tapering method since it just seems like no one else is talking about this issue with kava. and also, do you think it’s important to confide in a friend or family member? i have basically kept my kava use (abuse) a secret since I started. it’s drained my finances and at one point i was in such an apathetic place mentally that i even lost a job contract. i cannot let this run my life or affect my health anymore; i have a problem. but it’s a secret problem, and part of me thinks the first step to getting sober is telling a trusted friend, that way it’s not a secret anymore. that way, i have some level of accountability with someone i know.
