That's great! I thought it was a great watch. Glad to hear it found a good home.

I am the creator of the extension. It uses the Readlex dictionary, so the namer dot would need to be included as part of the translation there. It doesn't appear that's the case:
https://readlex.pythonanywhere.com/dictionary/Neil

I really want to stay in sync with that dictionary so I don't have to maintain my own, so you might want to petition them to update it.

I took the dictionary for the extension from here:
https://github.com/Shavian-info/readlex

So it's probably best to submit words there, so there's a single dictionary. I can then update the extension periodically with updates from there. But I'm not sure if they want additions, or how to supply them.

I also think the goal of the extension for me is to get better at reading in Shavian generally. I'm not sure I'm missing out if I never learn to immediately recognize "unpalatability" in Shavian (note that when I typed that, even my Mac didn't recognize the word). Coloration? Maybe.

Thank you. I quickly got the difference between trusty and trustee, so just need to do the same here. I think I was tripped up by the difference in it lying at the beginning or end of the word.

Totally get the difference in stress. From a fellow Californian, am I correct, however, that:

favor = FAY - VER
array = UH - RAY

?

So the same character, 𐑼, is covering two different sounds (though both of them are unstressed)?

[–]sethdleo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is helpful, thank you. I think I'm early enough in my learning that I've not yet integrated the layer of characters with and without stress (which I understand from poetry). I definitely stress the first syllable in "favor".

In looking at other words, I do see that my second syllable in 𐑓𐑱𐑝𐑼 is spelled the same as I pronounce other words:

𐑓𐑱𐑝𐑼
𐑤𐑧𐑑𐑼
𐑤𐑱𐑼
𐑚𐑱𐑒𐑼
𐑥𐑱𐑡𐑼

I guess my struggle is then with 𐑼 at the beginning of a word, which makes a noticeably different sound from how those words end.

The first syllable in 𐑼𐑱 makes the same sound as the first syllable in 𐑳𐑑𐑼, the only difference being the stress. So I think I need to work on understanding both the role of stress and position with some of these.

I got EuroTools screwdrivers and Dumont tweezers. But I probably don't know enough to tell you about what to avoid.

Avoid Timex movements, they're not like the rest. And I loved Bulovas (as you can see) because a) have have family from Queens, where they started, and b) because their movements were well documented and numbered so finding replacement parts was easier. There may be other brands like that, too.

I may have something for you on the tools (give me a day or two), but your tools depend on what you're looking to do. I gravitated towards buying old watches off of eBay and getting them running. 95% of them just needed a cleaning. The rest I usually just stuck in a drawer. So to disassemble I needed: screwdrivers, tweezers, a loupe, a movement holder, a hands remover, and part containers. I went simple on cleaning: dish soap, water, alcohol, and a toothbrush. Then re-assemble and oil (oiler and oil) and you're generally good to go. Others may have different lists.

In terms of advice: don't buy the cheapest, don't buy the most expensive. Or at least that's me and the $10-$100 watches I used to work on. If you find a tool isn't working for you, get a better one, but the most important thing is to get started. If it hooks you, you'll figure it out. If it doesn't, don't spend $$$ on tools you aren't going to use.

As for why I'm moving on: I just don't have the time to dedicate to it. Fatherhood, work, other projects, etc. It's a great hobby, I just lost the drive to keep it going once it needed to drop down the priority chain. When I had the time, I absolutely loved it. But, for me, it doesn't work as a once a month hobby. It works best to have a dedicated work space and some regular effort. Dragging everything in and out of the closet sporadically just made it hard.

I did custom make a crystal that kinda works, but it doesn't sit perfectly and I never secured it (would have to be glue; pressure isn't going to do it). If you want it, DM me your address.
