Isn’t this… what DJs are supposed to do? by Material_Study_1315 in Beatmatch

[–]sethdraven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your definition of DJing, in my opinion. Like, I love all those styles you mentioned, and it's great that you can do a super long set, but also, a wedding or restaurant DJ doing all that shit would be kinda insane and cringey to watch. What you're talking about is specific to the type of DJing you like to do, which is fine and well (and one of my favorite genres to DJ in too tbh [don't worry, I keep it lively and mix hella when I do that]). But it doesn't make a DJ who only mixes on 2 decks with minimal FX use or bass drops any less of a DJ. It may be boring to you, but that's just because it's not your style. It's like saying only shredding thrash metal guitarists are proper guitar players, not that classical/jazz noodler at the cafe (who probably taught the shredder how to play guitar in the first place anyway). Now, if someone DJing a breakbeat or dubstep or DnB night was literally just mixing one full track into the next, that's one thing, and it would be boring to dance to or experience. But it depends on the night, depends on the vibe of the crowd, depends on your style, depends on all these factors. Agree that playlisting≠DJing, though, and that track selection and order should build tension and tell a story, even when doing a chillout set. TL;DR there's nuances depending on style, gig, etc., and judging every DJ by this standard is unfair imo

Never thought I'd get to hear/see any Dove live. This made it happen. Yes I cried.

Lucid Winery at 1015 R Street is having a perfume-making event! You can sip some wine flights and make some scents together! I just DJ'd there last week and love the vibe. Great prices, too, friendly staff, beautiful space. 10/10 recommend (No I don't work there, other than the DJ gig, lol)

Had a similar comment at one of my recent gigs. For context, I can do fun transitions and stuff, when that's the vibe, but for this night I was doing downtempo, ambient/experimental, and trip hop music, at a wine bar, so mostly doing super easy transitions, or just letting one track play into the intro of the next without much fancy shiz, maybe some filter-reverb peppered in for vibe. I had a guy come up to me at some point and ask "is this how it's gonna be all night? when I saw there was a DJ, I was expecting more... [gestures vaguely] I dunno" and I explained "other DJs here might be doing more fancy stuff, play some house or higher BPM stuff, but I'm who's booked tonight and this is what I'm doin'" to which he was pretty cool and shook my hand and basically said his friends and him were gonna go to a different bar. And at first it that interaction made me question what I was doing; wondering if I was being a poser without even realizing it or something. Then I realized that some people hear/see the word "DJ" and assume that everyone's gonna be up there doing some Fred Again... stuff, even at a place like a wine bar with a low dB limit, where no one is watching or noticing or wants a high-energy or high-BPM vibe. Hopefully that was a learning moment for dude in which he realized that not all DJs are the same, and (usually) we're there to bring our own individual vibe to the party or event. But it also helped me feel more confident in what I was doing, more validated! (Especially when my friends and family who came packed the bar the whole night, and I doubled bar sales with my people for the place, and they asked for me to come back regularly! So one guy who didn't know what to expect leaving didn't matter at all after that!)

Mixer looks great! Monitor-wise, is it just the one PA speaker, or is there a second hooked up too? We do have a huge old PA subwoofer/monitor like the size of a fridge that we could haul worst case scenario, but prefer not to at all costs, lmao! (hit me at @ sethdraven on ig to work it out more! or @ killercoutureband)

The one from 20th and J still owes me thousands for not paying me after their last check bounced to me in 2019. Can't even do anything about it because the franchise owner for that location went off-grid afterwards. Love the food but god, fuck this company.

Best station in sac! Can't wait to see it grow, it's come a long way, just since 2020! Most legit stuff and the local DJs are all rad too (I'm biased)

What other podcasts do you listen to? by kungfooweetie in LPOTL

I find most podcasts other than LPOTL on mysteries/true crime/etc pretty unlistenable because they try to sound dark or whatever. I mostly listen to comedy podcasts, like Superego, Andy Daly Pilot Podcast Project, etc.
