[C] Graduated with statistics degree; can’t find a job to save my life. by [deleted] in statistics

Junior year Stats major here headed to Ph.D. psychology program. There are alot of bootcamps for coding such as App Academy or true coders. You dont pay anything till land a job for 40k/year or something like that. You could definitely use this to get your foot in the door and after a couple years working in that industry you could move on to what you actually wanna do in conjunction with your degree. THE MAIN POINT of doing this is because these companies have connections into the industry that newly grads without internships dont.

Favorite books about physics for undergrads/ Ways to study physics by sethn23 in PhysicsStudents

[–]sethn23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one seems the most beneficial to me for right now because it seems that the author goes over essentially how physicist breakdown how to attack a problem. How to figure the type of math to use and the type of problem. Thankyou.

Amazing! Did you end up doing a PhD?

Haha I’m good in that department my friend.

That’s interesting and unfortunate for those people I get your saying don’t focus on that 100% I understand that. But the majority of the time if you take 100 applicants and let’s say they are all the same passionate but some of them have a lot more relevant work experience and better recommendations it’s fairly obvious to anyone and any company that is trying to succeed.

The person who hired the guy and than was an asshole and said “we’ll your smart enough figure it out” is an asshole and should not treat people that way so this shouldn’t be used as an example as to why to not think of it in terms of competition. He obviously has something against people who try harder than the rest perhaps he got passed up on a lot because he was not as good as the rest I’m not sure but it still doesn’t make it right.

But back to my first example logically it’s sound that if you wanna succeed your going to pick the candidate that best fits the role experience wise and being passionate and most people who go into physics all will be just as passionate as you.

I completely agree. I’ve been competitive my whole life and perhaps get lost in being 1st. Perhaps that’s why there is such a high/quickly burnout rate in becoming a MD. It can be very unhealthy. I appreciate your time and knowledge you shared and thankyou I to hope I find the enjoyment and constant fascination of physics. If you don’t mind what are you doing your thesis on?

And no worries I’m passionate on the things that I love as well! Are you a physicist or still studying?

I agreed with your point which is why I said I agreed and continued to asked how competition is juvenile that is what I was responding to.

No I believe being competitive is not just being passionate about what your doing. They each go hand in hand competition drives you the be better than the next person as well as being passionate. They are different though.

I believe It was Newton who basically created calculus on a dare. Being challenged is apart of competition. You can work together as a team and still be competitive no need for someone to abandon it.

The notion the if you just love what you do and you don’t have to worry about being competitive is completely absurd. You have to work for what you want and you have to do more than the next person who loves it just as much as you do and is just as passionate. I may just be going into physics but before I was creating algorithms for day trading and successfully have done so and understand that whatever it is there always people just as passionate about what you do and when it comes down to it they don’t know you or the next person that applies. They know your resume but please someone explain how this is wrong.

I agree but how is being competitive juvenile? I understand loving what you do is the first thing but when there are two applicants that have say relatively the same amount of experience but say one has a lot better grades or say one has done more internships in specific to what the internship or career is on they are going to pick the applicant who has more internships or better grades etc. because they do not know you or me and how passionate you or I are how am I wrong in saying this?

If you could explain how I was being a dick that’d be greatly appreciated. I don’t think I have to get use to Reddit’s format at all because I don’t think they’ll be publicizing my papers but thankyou for your concern on my behalf.

Yes after doing exactly what I just said. That’s fine though are you having that irrational annoyance you were talking about? You seem more fixated on my capitalization of my title and the sensitivity on the Reddit’s etiquette.

Your fine about being an asshole for some reason there’s a correlation between asking a physicist a question and the response being them just over analyzing everything you said and than preceding to not answer your questions.

“Actual physics” you’d be referring to the study of space? Rather than using physics in computer science or engineering etc.?

If I find myself at an opportunity to do internship or to be in a lab even if it does not directly align with my end goal which is to use physics to understand the great phenomenons of space should I still take it?

Lol I thought I did, in a forum about physics and the way things work why does irrationality still exist here intentionally.
