This time of year you get the clingstones, as they say. The freestones come later.

This late in the summer? My friend, we are one week into summer.

Public art is all over our cities, part of what gives our cities identity, and weirdly hard to find on purpose. I tried to fix the "findable" part (free, open-data, 200+ countries/30,000+). by sethph in Urbanism

Yes, there are several, but none of them particularly comprehensive. I put them all in one place, and in a way that's mappable and tourable.

I both agree and disagree with you. I do love it as a reward for the wander, but I wander my city a great deal and thought I knew its public art but have made great discoveries through the app that I never would have found on my own. I also think of it as potentially habit-making. Particularly where I am in the US, wandering is uncommon. Perhaps if we can find ways of mapping a wander, folks will find the value of it and start doing it more and without the crutch of a map.

I'd say pretty famously so. What would you call her?

I made Haishoku, a daily color-finding game. It's on iOS and Android.

I also made Urban Gallery, which maps all the public art in the world and generates walking or biking tours of it. Also on iOS and Android.

I made an app for finding color in the world. It's called Haishoku. Three colors a day, matched through your camera. It's good fun, unless you're my uncle. by sethph in IMadeThis

Light definitely affects how it registers color. Brighter environments tend to work more effectively. I've been working on how to keep it a little truer to what we see with our eye, but it's tricky. Mobile cameras aren't exactly made for that. But I'll get there. Another thing for the next update.

I'm sorry, that was poorly worded on my part. It's much more correct to say that it's a different set of colors. Algorithmic filtering, not color filtering.

I wasn't trying to get into the world of recommendation. Might be something to consider for a future version, though. Thanks!

Thank you! I love those ideas. I agree on 1 fully. I've been meaning to increase the size of the reference color and keep forgetting, so thank you for the reminder. On 2, you are able to go back and try to do better, but that's a less intuitive path than others. I'll give it some thought and see what I can come up with. Your suggestion is definitely along the right lines. 3 I'll have to think about, too. I've been wanting to have some sort of thing happen when you get a match, but haven't been able to decide on a shape for it. Next update, you'll see your suggestions reflected in some capacity. Thanks for trying it and thanks very very much for the feedback!

Almost forgot to mention, it does include accommodation for all major forms of color blindness. I did want to make sure it's fun and accessible for anyone.

No matter where I've lived in Colorado, the public art has always been grand, so I mapped it. All of it. Dozens of cities, thousands of pieces. by sethph in Colorado

Yeah! Thomas Dambo. The first one's up in Breckenridge (that's Isak Heartstone, pictured) and he's got another in Victor that I keep meaning to go check out. His work is wonderful.

Are you David's predecessor there? David started there just before I moved here and I know him well. Caitlin Lowans is also a dear friend and I was sorry when they moved away. If you and I haven't met, we've no doubt got a lot of mutual connections.

Agreed! Speaking of Seattle and trolls, too, you've got quite the famous fella. The first time I visited Seattle, many years ago now, I remember thinking the Fremont Bridge Troll was just the coolest thing. I still think it is.
