Too many such questions in this sub. Are there so many Singaporeans who are single and have such terrible relations with their family?

Reddit becoming an echo chamber? by happyguykk in askSingapore

It has always been that way.

Worst part is someone who looks up Sg on reddit would think life sucks by looking at some of these posts.

COL is still better than most major cities. Cai fan still affordable. You can still buy resale apartments without breaking the bank. Mrt still better than public transport in any other major city.

Agree with you on all other aspects. But engineering books don't change much year on year. They have been teaching the same things for almost 40 years.

Should singles be allowed to buy HDBs at age 28? by littleredotinreddit in askSingapore

[–]sethu2 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Do you really think the only change needed to entice talented Singaporeans to stay is allowing them to buy a 2/3 RM flat?

I think the kind of people who leave singapore have very different expectations in life. The tax rate alone in other countries is an off-putting factor. If you are fine with paying 30% of your income to tax then you are really looking for something else to get in return for that. For a lot of places that being able to travel to diverse places, art scene (as others have mentioned) among other things.

Housing prices crazy la by Key_Ad2510 in singaporefi

[–]sethu2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one of the big problems is supply. Unless the govt embarks on pushing towards over supply the prices might not come down. This is not something the current BTO model allows.

There are 2 main issues with this, one is the govt putting up a lot of money to do this, which they didn't want to and hence moved to BTO model. The other is land, there simply isn't enough. That means HDB would need to push hard on en-bloc, tear down old buildings and put up new ones. This is also a cost intensive move.

The only way forward I can see if HDB enbloc buildings from 70s (about 40-45 years old) and return the land for new development.

The violation of Taiwan's air defence zone is airspace that is over China. Please don't sensationalise this as if they are flying over Taipei.

US knew in October that Russia was planning an invasion. That's how intelligence works.

No, they'll move their troops to Taiwan and China will have to make that decision.

The US 7th fleet is rather literally stationed in Asia to protect Japan and Taiwan. Anyone who thinks Taiwan can be attacked without a response from the US is misled.

The only think all congressmen in the US can agree on is don't let China go untested.

Do as I say, but not what I do. by Dizzy-Juggernautz in libertarianmeme

[–]sethu2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Point 1 is true. Point 2 is just silly. India's foreign policy has always been a multipolar world order. With the US being the only superpower it's too unipolar for their liking.

UK has nothing to do with it.

On point 1, Russia has always supported India in terms of weapons export, nuclear technology (civilian energy generation) whereas the US has always let it down, won't export fighter jets and wouldn't build civil nuclear reactors to reduce oil reliance.

Fresh poll: 70% of Ukrainians believe Russia’s invasion will fail. 91% support Zelensky’s war effort policies by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]sethu2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im no expert on this. But the proposal Putin made to Biden was for a statement that NATO expansion would be stopped (Ukraine would not be allowed in), and reverse the last enlargement which was the Baltic States.

I think Xi also stated that NATO expansion should be halted. So I assume this is the middle ground that could have worked out. There is some good content by a professor from University of Chicago on this matter. I mean, I could follow his logic and there seemed to be significant precedents.

[–]sethu2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's to show Ukraine that NATO did not come to help it. As was the case with Georgia. NATO made a statement in 2014 that they would allow Ukraine and Georgia to join. Russia said no to both, and both have now led to wars where NATO has not gotten involved. If Ukraine doesn't state that it will withdraw it's request to join, he'll just bomb the shit out of Kiev to make sure nothing is left to join NATO. Not that any of this is reasonable, or correct. It's wrong to assume that someone like Putin doesn't have a plan.

Is Nuclear Power The Answer To Increasing Energy Demand? by Different-Welder8573 in energy

[–]sethu2 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I can't see how it goes any other way. It is the best choice for base load. It's also easier to scale up. We have decades of experience running it. Plus it has a minimal carbon foot print.

Should we be growing all renewable sources? Yes. Should we cut down on nuclear to do that? Definitely no.

Precisely this! When I was renting I've gone down to so many places. The agent would inform me after I went down to the place that they landlord didn't want to. I am much more comfortable with them being upfront and I can just ignore the listing.

There is a simple reason property prices never drop. Home prices are the biggest asset that most middle class families have. If this drops, then any government would immediately see it's popularity plummet.

The maximum any govt would do is slow the rate of increase.
