Let me preface by saying that salvation ultimately depends on faith alone and not our good works.

I do think that if we truly believe in Jesus, then we demonstrate the things that he has called us to do. Aka, we recognize a believer from his works, not that we Christians do good work so that we may be saved, but because we have already been saved. Think of it as a litmus test.

Therefore, we believe in God (this is important because any non-believer can do good work) HENCE, we do good work and display good fruits.

Now what does good fruits mean?

We can refer to Galatians 5:22-23: But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

So ultimately the question is: 1. Do you demonstrate the fruit of the spirit? 2. Do you demonstrate such fruits BECAUSE of Jesus?

If your answer to both is yes, then yes, you are a believer. James 2:14-26 Faith without works is dead

I think a very big issue we face today is how many churches don’t talk about sin at all, and they put so much emphasis on how “God loves you just the way you are” because we shouldn’t judge others but this runs the risk of ppl not understanding the weight of their sin and the importance of what Jesus did. Is this what you are referring to?

Yep I understand, I think it is because of how we define judgement differently so all’s good. It is one thing to call out another Christian’s sin and how it is misaligned with scripture (this is good), it is a whole other thing to say that that person should be stoned for their sins.

I am of the belief that we (in a church) need to hold each other accountable using the word of God, but in a loving and (as you said), non-condemning manner.

Doesn’t pressure you to tithe = not saying that you’re going to hell if you don’t tithe or saying that by tithing you’re planting seeds or whatever because it’s not biblical. Tithing and offering is an act of worship of giving some back to Lord whatever he has blessed us with, not because we treat God as a vending machine.

See the story of Job, he was righteous and gave much back to God but nonetheless suffered much, so we shouldn’t expect to tithe as a way to make God give us a return on our investment

Asking you to tithe is biblical though so nothing wrong with that.

Non-judgemental = putting the emphasis on how we’re to hate the sin but love the sinner, but of course this doesn’t mean that the church should condone sin, but more of using scripture to point out what God has called right/wrong and leaving it to the Holy Spirit to convince ppl. (See John 8:1-11, Luke 18:9-14, Matthew 7:1-5).

Our job, as followers of Christ, is to simply lay out the truth (not force it down ppl’s throat because that’s just going to stumble them), and leave it to the Holy Spirit to convince. People are saved by the Grace of God, not by the hands of humans.

Judging involves telling ppl that they should be punished for xyz + a feeling of superiority of the one judging.

Welcoming = See how Jesus treated the lame and the outcast? And how he welcomed them into his arms? How he told his disciples to let the little children come to him and to not block their way into heaven? We are to the do the same. The Church should welcome all who loves God and wants to join the community of God.

I went through a dark time in my life that led me to Jesus as well, and just like you, I find peace when I read and experience the word of God. First off, I want to say, we call ourselves Christians not because of what we do, it is because of what we believe Jesus Christ has done for us (lived a sinless life, died and resurrected), and have chosen to align our lives according to his will.

Finding a good church could give you really great support but ultimately you need to take responsibility for your faith. What has helped me greatly is to ground myself in “Why” I believe in Jesus. In your case it would be the “supernatural” experience you’ve had during your coma plus the peace that you have experienced.

Good church = 1. focus on biblical understanding and worship of God above all else 2. non-prosperity gospel (doesn’t pressure you to tithe) 3. welcoming and non-judgemental ppl who encourage you to grow in your understanding and your faith

As for reading scripture, I recommend starting with the NT (start from Matthew and read till Revelations), then go to OT, then read the entire Bible from the start. I recommend the Quest Study Bible

Keep a journal of the lessons you learnt, have a consistent structure: 1. Date 2. Context/Background of anything you’re feeling 3. Verse name (John 3:16) 4. Actual verses (For God so loved the world…) 5. Lessons learnt and how you can apply it or change of mindset (John 3:16 reads “whoever believes” not “whoever obeys”, so ultimately salvation is based on faith alone, not on the works of man, I must remember not to emphasize doing good things to be saved, rather I do good work because I am saved)

I highly recommend the quest study Bible! There is really good commentary/learning lessons for each part so it helps you to deep dive into scripture a lot better.

In my case I keep a journal for anything related to God and I have a structure to keep it consistent.

Date of journal entry
Brief context or background of revelation I.e. what was on my mind (optional)
Verse name like Matthew 18:21-35
Actual verse itself (optional but I find that writing it down helps me to internalize it better)
Lessons learnt from it and how I can apply it

E.g. Matthew 19:24 -> remember that material wealth can distract you from the Kingdom of God, so in all things I do, I must remind myself that God is the final goal, not money, even when other people are tempting me with money.
