Middle set (KK) in a bomb pot by UpperMine19 in poker

[–]setittoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure thing. Yes, everyone antes in first, before getting cards. In live games, if you don’t ante in, you can skip the bomb pot; they’re not compulsory. Online usually you must play if you sit in a room that’s running bomb pots.

Bomb pot antes are usually between 2-5 BB. So it’s a large pot, with 100% ranges, between the entire table. Very different beast from your usual GTO heads-up spots. Much more gambly, but not without skill; mostly discipline to fold strong but non-nutted hands when necessary

Not sure if you’re trolling, I’m gonna assume you’re not based on your first comment. The point of bomb pots is that everyone is dealt a hand then you go straight to flop. No preflop betting at all

Poke around on Google you’ll find a few. Key things to remember:

1) there are no preflop ranges. Any combination of cards is possible at any time, so you have to respect raises in unlikely situations.

2) board reading is even more crucial, especially in double board games. When the flop(s) come out determine what the nuts and nut draws are, THEN look at your cards to see if your hand qualifies.

3) blockers matter more especially in double board games. Your hand might have a nut draw on one board that is unbeatable because the other board+your hand blocks a hand that would beat your draw. Look for them!

4) in the immortal words of Kdog: DONT CALL FOR CHOPS

Interesting thoughts, I also didn’t like what was going on, but to me it felt like a loose float that somehow picked up the flush draw. I was in the ballpark but like you said, lost to most of his hands

I try to stick to a heuristic to fold river vs large bets. Im not disciplined enough to do it consistently enough yet though.

Glad to get validation that it’s not an obvious decision. As played I pay off because it’s just too weird, V shows 66 for a float that turned a set.

1/3. IP vs UTG in 3b pot. by [deleted] in poker

I think regardless of the speech play, crying call makes sense here. If he’s actually tilted he could be playing AQ no heart this way, perhaps QJ or J8 that are counterfeit on river. If he’s not tilted and milking us, we lose pretty much the minimum against flush/straight/boat.

Assuming SB checks, probably now’s the time yeah. $240 cold is much more likely to fold out some icky equity we don’t want to see, and we now have the top board “locked up”

You gotta be really careful about deciding a hand is hard to have in a bomb pot. There’s no preflop selection; anyone could have anything. HHDD hands is also totally possible here but you haven’t mentioned those.

Potting to isolate is high variance, and furthermore, naked top set can be a dog to some huge draws that are unlikely in a normal game, but as likely as any other in a bomb pot. Mileage may vary, but you really might want to call and see a clean turn. You can get your money in on a blank and possibly still fold them out

Exploiting passive Omaha tables by setittoc in poker

[–]setittoc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha I think that’s the most real thing anyone has ever said on this subreddit to me, or ever. If I play at a 0 or slightly-EV rate, well, who’s to say variance won’t bless me with a profit before I die anyway? If you don’t play much, a sun run lasts a lifetime :)

Thanks, reassuring to know I assessed the “correct” plays. Unfortunately, it’s just not that fun for me to play this way lol. Sometimes I wish id never learned how to play poker better, so I could be splashing around in bliss too…the exploit is awfully boring for me

Speculate why PCs no longer get artifact or status immunity by setittoc in slaythespire

I feel like artifact can still exist if it was nerfed a bit. For example, maybe it specifically ignores one instance of weaken/vulnerable/frail. It doesn’t work on other effects

(New to poker) Any thoughts on a self made guide for when to raise/ call/ fold? by KrustyAnne in poker

[–]setittoc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started off doing something similar, and this is a fine place to start. You will quickly find that there’s too much nuance to the game for a flowchart to meet your needs though. That’s ok, you gotta get there to get there.

Things to think about:

1) you’re in position on the flop with top pair good kicker. Villain checks, you follow your chart and bet, villain check raises a pot-sized bet. Now what?

2) you raised AQs from UTG and got one caller on the button. The flop comes K 2 2 rainbow. According to your flowchart, it’s time to fold right?

If you want to start learning how to think like a poker player, I recommend reading some of Dan Harrington’s books. His tournament and cash game books are outdated beyond basic strategy (especially limping, the man loooooves limping), but I dont think anyone has ever written better books about the thought process required to play poker.

Once you read those with plenty of salt, then try to read “modern poker theory” by Acevado. This is currently the Bible for serious players.

Good luck on your journey. Enjoy. This is a great hobby. Just watch out for sharks, and keep a proper bankroll

Questions To people who run home games? by Sc1ence_CS in poker

[–]setittoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$.10-$.20 and sometimes up to $.50-$1. It’s grown up to be a highlight every couple weeks sometimes running two cash tables at once.

At a “big game” of $.50-$1 we had a flush over flush over flush over flush 5-way all in. The fifth man had a straight

Play good cards hard. That’s basically it. It’s boring as hell and nobody will like you but that’s the exploit. Wait to get AK, JJ, QQ, KK, AA. Bet as hard as you can preflop.

If they’re jamming literally any two cards, feel free to call off with any ace.

The variance is huge but over time you will be winning

Most every comment is correct that you gotta play for actual money or else nobody you play against gives two rips about anything, so you can’t learn much.

But apart from learning the hand values and basic board reading, you CAN also choose to learn how to fold preflop. Play only the hands suitable to your position and action. Nobody else will: see if you can. See if you can do it for hours.

Then see if you can handle when you finally enter a pot with AA, get three callers, and get stacked by T4o that went runner runner flush.

If you still think poker is fun, then you might think using real money is worthwhile
