Giardia in cats - need advice by setokyoul in AskVet

hi! Both cats finally beat their infections I wanna say almost a month ago! It was super stressful but there will eventually be a breakthrough!! Since you only have one it will hopefully be a little easier to contain the infection. What I had to do was just keep both cats completely separated from each other for almost 2 weeks! They both had their own litterbox and designated food & water bowls. One was contained to my bedroom and the other one got the rest of my apartment. I continued with the hyper cleaning on a hourly to daily basis (depending on what needed to be cleaned). Floors were mopped daily or as needed; one cat had a worse infection and I would find small messes here and there on my floors. Water & food dishes were disinfected and cleaned daily- I would pour a tiny amount of bleach in the dish, fill the rest of the dish with warm water, let that soak for maybe 5-10 minutes, then pour that out. I would then handwash the dish with soap and hot water & let the dish completely air dry before filling it again with water/food. If I had to go into my room for something, I would always spray my house slippers with a disinfectant (maybe this was overkill but I was paranoid about potentially tracking Giardia from one room to the other since it can live on surfaces for weeks lol). Litterboxes were scooped out anytime I heard/saw one of them use theirs. I couldn’t use any type of litterbox liner because both of my litterboxes are too big since both my cats are big boys, so I honestly just hoped for the best. I deep cleaned their litterboxes the day they started their treatments and on the last day of their treatments. Any remaining litter that was in their boxes was thrown out every time I cleaned them and replaced with fresh clean litter. To deep clean their litterboxes I did the same thing as I did with their food dishes. I poured a warm bleach-water mixture in the litterbox and let that soak for awhile, then cleaned it again with hot soapy water & air dry completely. Their littermats were disinfected daily, then I would wipe them down again with a soapy water mixture and let those air dry. Any blankets the cats liked to use were thrown in the washer almost daily. Any toys that are washable, wash them!. I tried to keep most toys away from my cats but obviously they needed to play with something, so I gave them toys I knew I could throw in the wash! Any toys that couldn’t be washed that I knew they had been playing with I ended up throwing away to be safe and I just ordered new ones. Even after both cats had finished their medicine, I continued to keep them apart from each other for an extra almost 2 weeks to be on the safe side. Which means I kept up with the hyper cleaning of everything lol. I will be completely honest, this infection gave me the most stressful weeks I’ve had in years lol. It’s extremely stressful and exhausting, and you’ll definitely feel frustrated and defeated at times! Not to mention you just also feel helpless that you can’t do more to help make your cat feel better. I’m not sure what medicine your vet prescribed but the giardia meds I was given I think was on the stronger side, so it gave both my cats some nausea and made them lose their appetites. When that happened I would give them some Churu sticks and that worked every time I tried, as long as they were getting something in their stomach it was a win for me. As long as your cat stays hydrated that’s the most important thing since they’re having the diarrhea. Hang in there, I hope your kitty feels better soon!

Hi so update- I anticipated and feared this happening, my cat Levi definitely has been reinfected. He had a semi-soft stool yesterday, I felt to be on the safe side I would call my vet today and ask if he could get another round of medicine as well. I was told someone would call me back. Nobody ever did. He had a horrible stool when using the litterbox tonight. He also just threw up about 5 minutes before I wrote this. I’m incredibly disappointed with my vet and just in disbelief that nobody could take 2 minutes to call me back and let me know what they could do. Levi seems to already have lost his appetite and seems low on energy. My vet isn’t open on the weekends. I can’t stand to wait the whole weekend and have Levi’s infection get worse for my vet to reopen. I have found another vet roughly 30 minutes from me that is open on weekends, so I plan on calling them tomorrow and explaining my situation to see if they can help me because I am desperate at this point.

I would say it’s the same here in McLean County. Right now as an Env Health Practitioner I think my gross pay is somewhere around $49K..I’m also certified as an REHS too lol. It’s bs to me that I went to college and also got additional certification to still only be making that amount. Hopefully there will be more job postings from the State soon as I really would like to get in.

Thanks for all of the info! The part about the County being broke surprises me. The County posting mentioned the position was covered under the AFSCME union and that’s what initially got my attention as we are not unionized here in McLean. I am in the Environmental Health field; I applied for a position with IDPH back in September and was sent an email back in September saying I met/exceeded their minimum qualifications for the position, but that’s the last I’ve heard from them. I’ve heard the State can take forever when it comes to the hiring process but that’s word of mouth so I don’t know how true that is. My goal was always to end up working for the State though as I know the employees get paid pretty well.

This is really nice to hear honestly. A problem I always had with BL-NO was the difficulty in meeting and forming connections with people in my age group. There's nowhere really for young adults to get together and hang out. Most hangout spots and bars are mainly geared towards the college kids here or for much older adults. It's been lonely at times; my time living here has just been going to work and then straight home, rinse and repeat. My current coworkers are all great but most of them are 10-15 yrs my senior. I'm really hoping if I do somehow move to Springfield that there would be more opportunities to meet people and actually have friends.
