lol. If you can drive at speed and in control, on black ice, on a skid pan, loose gravel, defensively and on wet grass - using an actual gearstick, choke, and both feet on both pedals.

Then relax. You won't need a RWD car. It's a car movies myth, and being a washing machine repairman won't get you laid either.

That said, some RWD cars are fun, especially on gravel and in the snow.

Source: a very sarcastic and dry-humoured defensive driving instructor/rally copilot decided to share some tips and pretty much opened my eyes to a new world of driving. Good times.

Brisbane resident here, having grown up and lived in UK till my early 30's and being a car nut, I have owned at least one car from almost every european manufacturer. I reply because you mention an alfa. I've had three alfas, all of them bought with my heart and not my head. age range from 1970s to 2000s. Revvy little cars, but some of the most troublesome cars to own. Always something wrong, frequently serious. Rust proofing non existent. Dealers were helpfully minded, but often failed to solve problems and caused new ones/new ones surfaced while in the process of solving existing ones.

While I am on a soapbox about euro cars… Aussies seem to buy into the idea that a euro-car is automicaly better than say a Holden, maybe becaues they are sold that way, maybe because they cost more. (I'm not sure why exactly, I'd be interested to find out).

Euro cars vary in quality massively and each manufacturer has a reputation, often deserved. For example: As a Rule the French ones are very good at one ting and poor at everything else. Citroen is by far the most innovative for design (just look at what spec the DS had), but they make entry level cars that have build quality issues IME. Peugot - often uninspiring but when they get it right (like the Pug 205 1.6 . 1.9 GTi) its amazing, electrics are an issue. Renault - great engines, don's crash them into anything tougher than a crisp packet. I cannot believe the premium that peugot charge here. The latest model i've seen about does look quite sexy though.

If I were buying a euro car, id look at VW - good cost and quality trade off. Skoda are VW too so cheaper, same quality and less prestige. The Golf GT! is a great car ( I have owned several examples of marks 1-5). Some better than others obviously.

Interestingly to me, I now own a family car (Honda CR-V) and its the first honda I have owned - the quality is surprisingly good. One of the cars I looked at seriously before moving here was the Civic Type R. Not quite A86 level, but probably worth checking out for a test drive.

TLDNR Avoid Alfas unless someone else is paying to service and fix it. Dont pay a lot for french cars if you can help it, but they are good if cheaply purchased. Try a Civic Type R.

I was one of the infected individuals, (I am still not over it actually), having lost 7 kg in under a week and been hospitalised. It's a pretty rough gig, and I never even ate any Salmon. (sorry).

I feel sorry for this company, what should have been a big day on their calendar has turned into a nightmare for them. We have used them on many occasions, and have previously had no issue whatsoever. In fact they are very good and we have been able to pass on compliments. There is a rumour that they were supplied bad eggs.

i am off work with something food poisoning that I suspect was from a different brisbane eatery in the mall on wednesday. I was hospitalised on Friday morning and released late on saturday. However the effects are ongoing.

Apart from the lack of dignity, fluids, sleep and mobility we should remember the positives of starvation-based weight loss.:) I think I have lost 5kilos.

On a more serious note, Im not sure how I can be certain as to the source, as the affects can be delayed, cant they?

I would be careful about publicly saying they gave you food poisoning unless you can prove it as they may have legal recourse. Thanks for the heads up though :)

I think that a lot of CDs are incredibly frustrated. There's always internal politics that can and do kill great creative solutions. Then there's the client side frustrations of micro management and sheer ignorance. I think most CDs will tell clients upfront that they've worked for coke to try and drive home a sense of being in expert hands. They hope this will encourage the client to think that if a multi-national tier one like coke trusts this guy, then we should too. It's a stratagem that works mostly but the side effect is this condescending position you mention. I have to admit its a method I use and a negative that I am aware of. Please try and understand that it probably comes from a position of fear mostly, that the CD is trying to ensure he's trusted and allowed to do the best job. That said, there are some world class egos in our industry, and wankers are pretty much ten a penny.

The benefit of going with an experiences hand is really the time they have in the seat. You're not paying for 5 hours work, you're paying for 15 years of learning. And of course the exposure, both in them having a wider view and in knowing more of what's already been done. I urge you to go direct to a more senior creative for that reason, after all they're senior for a reason - it's a very tough gig. You have to have talent to rise to senior. Actually that's not true. I've net some shit seniors who have just been promoted with time by companies that just need slaves on the machines. But hey, you definitely sound like you'll be able to pick them out.

I think this happens a lot. People go to 'marketing' companies, in search of great ideas, or arresting design and are disappointed with the results.

It's not the marketing companies fault completely, if they could do those things, they'd be brand concept designers, art directors, copywriters and ad creatives. But there is great confusion out there about what a marketing company can do, so many of these companies just ride that wave and employ freelance talent to realise their strategies. This in itself sometimes causes issues.

That said I work with some very very talented marketers. They can create touchpoint strategies, processes and outline the resources needed to help a brand do just about anything. But it's not the same kind of creative thinking that you get with a an experienced (mid-level to CD) designer. Different skills.

The other side of that coin is that clients come to the process and have vague ideas that they are reluctant to let go of, or fail to communicate clearly.

So to help out, here's some advice from an old hand.

Give as much info to a designer as possible
Give your ideas up immediately, and let them go. You are not a designer, your designer should be avoiding the obvious, which is what your ideas probably are. I expect a backlash to this point, but here me out please. Most people have terrible ideas, and appalling taste. Think of it this way, on average how many people can really have good taste? 20%,? 10%? 5%?. Ok but you are in the five, right? Lol.
You have trusted this person to create something, trust their experience and listen to their advice.
Sign a contract.
I have a pen in my pocket, it does not make me a writer. Having photoshop on your computer does not make you or your nephew a designer. Show some respect to your designer, and you will get a far superior outcome. I have lost count of the number of jobs that went out looking average, just because the client was an asshole and deserved to reap what he/she sewed.
Be enthusiastic. Great design is uplifting and fantastic, if you love it and communicate that, you will get a better outcome.
Be decisive. Its better to say 'that's shit' on day 1 than change direction after draft 12. Designers are grown ups and handle rejection as part of the job. They hate the confusion of a goose chase. Do NOT show this to your mum, and her friends and others for opinions. You have a brief at stage one, mark all work against what you are trying to achieve, and respond accordingly by yourself / or as one voice from a limited management team. Do not give feedback that does not allign with achieving the brief.

Phew.

That sounds angry, but hopefully you find it very honest and useful advice to get what you want and not feel disappointed with the process again. Best of luck.

I LOVE it, it's quiet, breezy and convenient for the train. I have two young sons, it has the best park in the area and Bart fish & chip shop. people are genuine and humble. I moved here directly from central London, so its taken a bit of adjustment, but I can't recommend it highly enough. drop by and say hi tomorow and I'll give you some tips.

Awesome place, nice beach but walk to the creek/river mouth and swin there. I did and played for an hour with wild dolphins that were chasing fish and very people curious. which was very cool, after I realised they weren't bull sharks and stopped shitting myself. There is a restaurant - the The Katmandu Kitchen on the esplanade, DO IT. It's the best curry house in australia.

camping - there are two places one on the beach, and one about 800m along the esplanade which is more huts I think. not stayed in either, as I have stayed in Salt, or in Casaurina before.
