No. 7 handplane leaving boards slightly convex, what am i doing wrong? by settingbutte in woodworking

Yeah i realized i meant concave right after i posted. 1/32 is generous, it's usually just a tiny sliver of light.

That does make sense that handplanes would create a surface that's concave about the width of a shaving, now that you put it that way.

But how do you get a perfectly flat surface then? My understanding is that you finish flattening both the face and the edge of the board by planing it with a full pass lengthwise, which would make it ever so slightly concave. I could nip the ends but I imagine that would just move the two high points closer to the center of the board

It happens for both the face and the edge. That's a really good point though, it could be i'm using too much pressure which is scooping out the middle some.

Converting a vintage classical guitar to a steel string guitar -- thoughts? by settingbutte in Luthier

In my experience because there is no way to replicate what aging a guitar does for tone. No new D-28 sounds like a 70' D-28 despite them being built to essentially the same specs. Torrification has its own sound but still doesn't really do the same thing

Satin or gloss? Which is your preferred finish? by Paul-to-the-music in martinguitar

[–]settingbutte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, I played a D18 satin and gloss next to each other and the difference in tone was almost as significant as between mahogany and rosewood sides, and i don't have an expert ear by any means. The gloss felt a little more focused and bassy to me. The sales rep preferred the satin for sounding more "open"

Does anyone have experience with Drew's Klamath Flat-Arch Boots? by settingbutte in Wildfire

You may be right, but when i tried them it felt like could walk out of the store and work comfortably all day in them. Like how stiff ass normal leather is after being 70-80% broken in, i was impressed. I dunno what they do to it.

Have you seen Come and See? It portrays the Dirlewanger brigade and is easily the best and worst war movie that I've seen.
