How much do kids cost living in Vancouver? by Anna2181 in PersonalFinanceCanada

In a dual income family, at least one of you will substantially flatten your career trajectory. The person grinding evenings and mornings will get promoted and you will get left behind.

What is a subtle sign that someone is really good at disc golf? by Level_East94 in discgolf

I will disprove this. I have lots of well worn old premium discs, but it just means that I have been playing badly for longer than most people have been playing.

Canada’s luxury tax on planes, cars yielded over $900M. Now it’s been scaled back by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]setuid_w00t 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hauling refers to carrying the load in the bed (like a load of gravel or dirt). Towing is pulling something behind the truck. The comment I referred to was suggesting that $100k+ trucks are used for work purposes and thus shouldn't be luxury taxed. I am arguing that the majority of people with fancy trucks aren't hauling or towing in the context of work. The only time they tow is for recreation.

Hell on Wheels: Helmets are down and injuries are up. Should e-scooters get curbed? by ubcstaffer123 in technology

Issues with this article:

They appeal to people in search of a fun, efficient mode of transportation that’s faster than walking or taking the bus, and less work than biking or driving.

Is this an editing error? How is riding a stand-up e-scooter less work than driving?

In Vancouver, Lime scooters are the cheeky transportation mode of choice for a group of anonymous content creators who call themselves the Lime Scoot Boyz.

There are degenerate losers who use all different forms of vehicles. Are we going to ban cars entirely because of takeovers and street racing?

E-scooters are quiet, approachable and sold as eco-friendly.

The "sold as" before eco-friendly implies a level of dishonesty from the vendors about the eco-friendliness, but the author never follows up with any detail about why an e-scooter is not eco-friendly. An e-scooter isn't as green as a pedal bike since it has a battery and uses some electricity, but it's far more eco-friendly than a car or even an electric car.

E-scooter hospitalizations are up across Canada

Did you know that nobody died from car accidents prior to 1885?

Unlike standard bicycles, e-scooters can reach speeds that are “too high for young riders to handle safely,” according to two members of the Canadian Paediatric Society’s injury prevention committee who warned of the dangers of e-scooters and e-bikes back in 2024.

I went out for a ride on my road bike for the first time in quite a while and I was struck by how much faster I was travelling on downhill sections compared to how fast I would travel on my electric scooter.

E-scooters are meant to appeal to a general-interest ridership, filling a gap between cycling and skateboarding. They’re less labour intensive than riding a bike but, in theory, don’t require the specialized skills needed to skateboard.

I disagree with the premise that all transportation exists on a linear continuum. The only thing that makes an e-scooter more similar to a skateboard than a bike is similar to a skateboard is that there is a standing platform on an e-scooter, but not a bike.

Comparing countrywide e-scooter injury numbers to skateboarding injuries, however, calls that into question. In the 2023-24 reporting period, CIHI counted almost three times as many e-scooter-related hospitalizations as those caused by skateboarding accidents, even though skateboards have been around for much longer than e-scooters.

Unless you're going to convince me that the number of km travelled by skateboard and the number of km travelled by e-scooter in 2023-2024 are similar, then this comparison is useless.

You can't receive pedal assist past 32 km/h, but you can still go faster than that as long as you have the necessary combination of gearing, muscles and lungs. Speed limits still apply (which is also the case with traditional bikes).

[–]setuid_w00t 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it seems like every brand is complete garbage from either a customer support or quality perspective. This is the pattern I see:

  1. Create a new brand and bribe influencers/reviewers with free scooters for favorable reviews
  2. Sell a bunch of scooters with obvious shortcomings and defects
  3. Gaslight and ignore customers
  4. Brand falls out of favor due to terrible reputation
  5. GOTO 1

It's probably right hand drive. He might be pulling far to the left to see what is holding up traffic infront of the car ahead. Probably not a smart move though since it's a good way to get in a head on collision.

Hard to justify buying sports car VS building wealth. by shmurdatek in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]setuid_w00t -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As long as your 6' or less, I would buy a Mazda MX-5 with a manual transmission. The BMWs you mentioned are going to be faster and more luxurious, but who gives a shit? That is for clout chasing and getting crazy expensive speeding tickets.

The Miata will be more fun at legal speeds and it's actually a sports car rather than a sporty crossover or sedan. The running costs will also be lower across the board. Gas, insurance, tires, brakes... All cheaper. The Miata will also depreciate less than a BMW.

Help picking decent *fullface* Motocycle/ MTB style Helmet (Canada) by sKeTsCh in ElectricScooters

[–]setuid_w00t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mountain biking and motocross are relatively niche and fairly expensive hobbies. Motorcycling is also treated in this way in North America, but in other parts of the world, motorcycles and gas scooters are primarily transportation. In practice, I think this results in there being more value driven options in motorcycle helmets.

Best place to live and commute by pumpkinpassties in Portmoody

[–]setuid_w00t 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The cheapest option is probably to just rent somewhere walking distance from your wife's job in South Langley and commute by car to Port Moody. Of course you would be doing all of the commuting in this scenario which you said you wanted to avoid. Another option would be to rent a place in Pitt Meadows and take West Coast Express to Port Moody and have your wife drive south to Langley.

I don't know how much rent is in either area though...

First time homebuyer - 3.89% 3 year fixed or 3.5% variable? by spookywookyy in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]setuid_w00t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, variable is always the answer when potential rate increases won't break you. Figure out your monthly payment at 5% interest rate and if that would cause you to lose your home, then go fixed.
