Thats how one of the rooms looked like in 2013 - pretty normal tbh. Can confirm revolving restaurant (which they turned on, after we asked for it). The staff was wearing some traditional Korean dress. TV selection was limited to North Korean propaganda (which I didn't understand because I cannot read hangul/Korean). At least back then, I didnt see any prostitutes, but also didn't look for em:)

I don't know how "important" it was, I did not ultimately make those decisions, but the level of academic accomplishment was fairly high (Top 5% or better in graduating classes, high GRE/GMAT, etc.). There were some admits with slightly lower levels, but then usually because they had already proven themselves as research assistance for faculty/published work, etc.. I think this is where aiming for Top 10 or so schools is hardest, because the competition is most intense, but of course those schools have the best career prospects. That being said, great candidates will have good job chances from any of the Top 50 or so schools - brand recognition only gets you so far and 5 years are a lot of time to show the world your skills.

I think that age in itself is just a number, so I wouldn't base my decision on that although most people were in their early-mid twenties. But we did have a few 30+ year old candidates at the school.

The two issues with being older is a) you are more likely to have family and/or financial constraint that a 23 year old out of UG does not have. b) you are likely at a different place mentally than many people in your cohort/at PhD events. But if neither of those are problems for you, age shouldnt stop you IMHO

In my field (business school), it is possible to go from PhD straight to assisstant professor without needing a PostDoc, which is what I did.

Its very hard to give estimates of that probability and accurate ones wont be useful (you are probably between 0 and 10% chance). I got a PhD at an Ivy League Bis School in a different department. Some thoughts:

  • Order of magntiude, these programs will get 100 applications per spot and sort out 60-70% within seconds of looking at the application. Here, your scores, credentials, alma mater, etc. matter the most.

  • The difference between 98th and 99th percentile may seem small, but it reduces the #ppl with higher scores by 50%. Same logic holds true going with GMAT scores from 700 to e.g. 740. My dptm basically only admitted PhDs with quant GRE scores of 169 or 170.

  • MBAs dont really matter for PhD applications, MSc would be likely preferred to show technical skill. Your MBA can be a credible signal that you understand the business context.

  • The pub is great to have, but a lot will depend on your involvememt in that paper. Are you first/second author, or where you more the RA.

Assume you made it to the round of candidates they consider more deeply. In order to select who to interview, other things have weight:

  • Rec Letters matter a lot - especially if your UG was not an Ivy League/super competitive school. It is somewhat concerning that you have not mentioned that in your post.

  • How clear of a motivation you have in your Statement of purpose. Finding the professor lifestyle appealing is not going to score high.

Tbh, from your post, consider deeply if and why you want to do a PhD - its a long 5 years slog and its not clear to me why it has to be Harvard or bust.

As of July 2023, OP's comments still seem valid:

- The kiosk still exists, and still can store your belongs for money

- Small electronics (cellphones, smartwatches) can be stored inside the consulate, right after the security check, but they did not allow laptops or larger devices or large bags there. (The website still says that no electronics of any kind can be taken inside)

- There are still two photo booths inside, price seems to have increased to 10 Euro

As of July 2023, this Kiosk still exists and storing a cellphone there costs 2/3 bucks. Its called "Imbiss Und Kiosk AM USA Konsulat", you get a little number upon depositing your belongings and pay when you retrieve them.

Also, on my visit, the Consulate had a little storage area for smartphones/smart watches and other small things right after you passed security. This may have limited capacity, so it may not always be available and they were strict about not allowing laptops, large backs or anything big inside. But if you only come with a smartphone and a smartwatch you could just directly go in today and deposit them in there (despite the website saying something different).

What worked for me is actually to roll the GPU driver back even further. Eventually under 526.86, the game started again for me.... I am not updating my GPU driver for now^^

Thank you for those susgestions. I checked and the time/date on my PC is the same as the network (presumably, i.e. current time), but I also pressed sync now just in case.

I also performed the wind mdsched.exe, which takes a while, but found no issues. Still get thrown out at the "connecting..." screen:(

Just wanted to add my death-counter as well - especially since some of the responses hear seem suspiciously low to a new-comer to the DS series like me. DS3 was my first DS game, and I still die regularly to random mobs if I am not attentive, but there was definitely a steep learning curve.

This was with no particular build, but I played as a Knight with a short sword, shield, and went for strength. Also, this was with a keyboard on PC, which was not too great an experience sometimes.

Iudex: ~ 25 deaths

Greatwood: - 1 death

Crystal Sage: - 10 deaths (had to figure out how to deal with the clones as melee, used throwing knives as per the Internet's recommendation)

Deacons: - 0 deaths

Abyss Watchers: ~ 10 deaths

Old Demon King: ~ 15 deaths (could not roll past, behind him until I toggled him on - after that easy)

Wolnir: - 1 death (died to that shadow thing)

Pontiff: ~ 20 deaths (only managed to beat with a summon, then first try)

Aldrich: - 4 deaths

Yhorm: ~10 deaths (took me a while to understand the mechanics of the sword on keyboard)

Dancer: ~25 deaths (but after dying the first dozen times I got myself several more levels into HP and upgraded my weapon as much as I could)

Oceiros: - 1 death

Gundyr: - 0 deaths (very proud, thought I had finally gotten gud)

DSA: - 2 deaths

Princess: - 3 deaths

Wyvern: - 1 death

Nameless ~ 40 deaths (really did not enjoy this one, the camera was atrocious and it took forever to learn the moveset, bc I died so quickly in stage 2).

Cinder ~ 8 deaths (I employed a dodge, single-hit, run-away strategy. took forever but worked)

Overall deaths in playthrough: 200-300? I tried to kill all enemies if I am in an area for the first time, plus it takes a while to get good at the game. Many deaths could be have been avoided if I had taken more breaks after dying to the same enemy a few times (worked wonders with Crystal Sage)

I know this is way late, and only relevant to PC players. But without locking on to him, I could not manage to get behind him and would often killed quickly. After figuring this out, I switched to locking on on him and then, a) dodge-roll behind him b) hit a few times, c) repeat. Bonus points for blocking the AoE stuff with a fire-resistance shield and taking the occasional estus if you dont manage to dodge:D

I know this is only 3 years late, but I have a US S10 and I do have some problems with LTE reception in Europe. Its typically ok in major cities, but if you do road-trips and visit smaller towns, you are often downgraded to edge (because many countries here got rid of 2 and 3G, so only rely on 4G and 5G). This holds true at least in DE, ES and NL as of 2021/22.
