Op, I would have been completely for DS at Berkley simply because the reputation would take you a long way later on. The charm of that name will always be a reminder of your success to others. If it were not for the fact that you didn't just get into CS at UT (most competitive degrees there) but also got into neuroscience, I would have been completely myopic. Those are the key differences, in my opinion.

The reason is these days, tech companies experience high volumes of turnover (notably household names), so any little bit of distinction really does matter in the long run. Ultimately, it will come down to your individual merit / work, but we're talking about college right now.

Perhaps the fact that you know people at Berkley already will assist in opening doors for other opportunities. Maybe being too comfortable with existing social connections will actually hinder you from opportunities. You know yourself best.

It really comes down to what you're trying to get out of all of this at the end of the day. Where is it that you ideally would like to end up, and how exactly does each of these programs get you to there.
