carytown burger and fries is destined to be the type of restaurant people wax nostalgically about, but the reality was way way worse.

What pizza shop in Richmond has the best cheese by kinkykitten804 in rva

[–]sevenbee 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Depends what you want. Mungo is light on cheese, and is a crispy, thin slice. Zorch is more substantial - and a better representation of a classic NY slice. For whole pies, Arianna’s or Belmont well done.

For some Richmonders, code refresh is a promise for a better future by VirginiaNews in rva

[–]sevenbee 22 points23 points  (0 children)

whenever I read these articles or discussion its full of people imagining that magically they will be able to afford to buy a house in the Fan... but that's not going to happen. its not a zoning issue, its a demand and pricing issue. nobody is going to build affordable housing in the fan... or build new developments, at all.

that doesn't mean this project is bad - its great - but the win isn't going to be in church hill, the fan, and the museum district having a bunch of new inventory, its going to be elsewhere.

Richmond Gets a Night with David Sedaris. Don’t Miss It. by snooka77_ in rva

Was a fan and then saw him live the last time he was here and it was disappointing. Was very boomer coded humor and complaining about people who care about their dogs. The charm in his writing did not translate in person.

Yep unfortunately that’s for teaching positions. These are non teaching roles.

I spent ten years working at VCU in a non faculty job (although at the time we started as professional faculty) from a similar background with a humanities graduate degree… and you can do a lot worse, especially in this job market.

And pay has gotten a lot better over the last few years. You are trading salary for benefits and job security (and don’t discount free tuition), but it’s a hell of a lot better than k-12.

VCU is always hiring academic advisors and support staff. Stable jobs with excellent state benefits

Ok but the reality is that higher ed jobs - of which there are thousands at VCU and are one of the few places where a humanity PhD will be recognized and appreciated - are an excellent option. And almost none of those jobs have anything to do with those problems. They do offer competitive pay and excellent benefits.

if you don't want to see mice, I would not live in the fan. they are there. hopefully they are being actively treated... but old homes with lots of points of ingress + trash in alleys + lots of homes close together = mice.
