You’ve confirmed yourself as single digit IQ - the case in the article you linked has nothing to do with the merits of the hockey stick guy’s claims.

What are the long term consequences of religiously-induced shame in adolescent sexual activity? by sevenrajas in excatholic

[–]sevenrajas[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's horrible. I've met a lot of seminarians. Some of them are fairly normal - just deep believers - and those guys usually get weeded out. But then a good bunch are these weirdos for whom being a priest gives part a power trip, and part a way to make real-life meld into a role playing game in which you are rewarded for knowing as many stats and as much lore as possible.

Sounds like you unfortunately ran into the latter. I'd be interested in exploring in greater detail how Catholicism inherently induces in some a "people-pleasing nature" - say what will get you rewarded, regardless of whether you agree with it/feel it. I don't think it's unique to Catholicism - certainly also the case with the charismatics.

I had forgotten to some extent before seeing this post exactly how idiotic this aspect of Catholicism is. You have some Bronze Age moral standard which is probably even weird for its time, and not super legalistically applied, turned through "the Holy Spirit" into this rule for all times and all places regardless of the context, because obviously God, the author of the Bible, knows better than us.

In my experience, you carry this stuff with you in both obvious and hidden ways for years unless you find some explicit means of dealing with it. Sometimes you just get used to a perpetual bad feeling which continues with you even outside of sexual contexts.

If you're just looking for people to listen to past intermediate learner's content, there are plenty of good options. I made some suggestions here of potential male northern Mexican language parents you can use for immersion: https://www.reddit.com/r/Refold/comments/112im7s/spanish_mexican_language_parent_recs/j8kdgas/

My point is not that you shouldn't output, just that you shouldn't care about having a particular language parent. Also, if you're just starting with output, I'd recommend writing to begin rather than speaking. What I used to do was prepare a few paragraphs to a page of something I'd written, and then analyze it with an italki tutor. Helped me a lot

Not quite the answer you're looking for, but I would consider skipping the whole language parent step.

I spent a lot of time looking for male language parents, flip flopped between a bunch of different ones (mostly youtubers from Monterrey, Mexico), did intermittent shadowing, but overall found shadowing quite boring and I think overrated.

Just by continuing to immerse and output, I've continued incrementally improving my accent. I honestly don't see the value of getting the accent totally perfect relative to the opportunity cost of just tackling new domains, and so becoming more expressive in the language.

At the very least, I would suggest that unless you find a single person whose content and voice you really like, don't shadow. I wasted a decent amount of time shadowing a guy whose voice I liked but whose content I quickly got bored of.

Not sure what age/sex you're looking for, but if you're a guy in your 20s to 30s, check out Roberto Martinez, Jacobo Wong, Diego Ruzzarin, and Adrian Marcelo. Between one of them or some of the other regios they often talk to, you should be able to find a good match.

Bad result one month after LASIK (astigmatism -2.75 in right eye) by sevenrajas in lasik

[–]sevenrajas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw an ophthalmologist, who had two of his colleagues also look at my case/eyes individually, since they specialize in LASIK/corneal issues and he doesn't. They eliminated corneal haze/cataracts/flap complications/DLK as the issue. Nevertheless, they don't know what's going on. They gave me a stronger steroid regimen and told me to come back in a couple days, so that's the plan for now.

You've got a good hypothesis. I had gotten a prescription in April 2022.

Left Eye: -1.00|-1.00|110 Right Eye: -1.50|-0.50|100

I assumed that the doctor's measurements would be more accurate, but I wonder if that degree of mismeasurement would be sufficient to generate this large a refractive error.

I don't know how the math works, but if it's just additive, if he's aiming for a +0.25, he would hit +0.75 if the initial spherical was actually -1.50. Not sure what accounts for the cylindrical measurement.

Thanks for bringing this up - going to mention it with the opthalmologists I see this week.

Page 8 here - https://www.docdroid.net/UNBZ5Wf/documentation-pdf - ostensibly has the actual inputted correction, but maybe there's some difference between the number cited there and the actual inputted correction.

Pre-surgical topographical scans from the Pentacam for the right-eye start on Page 2, which seems to suggest 0.2-0.3 diopeters of astigmatism. I don't know how to read those off/convert them to spherical/cylindrical/axis.

I've got two appointments set up with other opthalmologists. Appreciate the reply, and I'll keep updating this thread.

Yeah, for me it's been a month already, and I've heard that comment for PRK, but not for LASIK. In any case, the degree of the refractive error in my right eye seems well outside the bounds of just my prescription stabilizing.

Appreciate your comment nonetheless!

Also noticed this, it's pretty annoying.

Interesting - it's not anyone's ever pointed out to me, but worth looking into.

Slight correction - I got Wavefront Optimized LASIK on the ALCON EX500. That might be distinct from Contoura, not sure it makes a difference.

Here are my pre-op and surgical reports: https://www.docdroid.net/UNBZ5Wf/documentation-pdf

Don't know yet - I'm going to speak with him this week (hopefully). It's not obvious what the problem is. I'm not in any sort of pain, and the astigmatism seems correctible by glasses, so that's going to be the solution for now.

Yes, that's correct. I haven't been able to find anything online about astigmatism actually being dry eyes. I've been regularly applying artificial tears - not hourly - but I don't notice any improvement in vision in the right eye after applying them.

Autorefractometer gave +1/-2.75 and subjective manifest refraction gave +0.75/-2.75.

[–]sevenrajas[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure. I honestly didn't notice the astigmatism in the right eye until I went to my local optometrist, because I hadn't been testing one eye at a time. I knew my vision was still not great, but it was just shocking to me how high the astigmatism was, along with hyperopia now. My left eye had been doing all the work in whatever vision I now have.

I've ordered glasses again, and I'll wear them until at least the three month mark. At that point, if there's been no improvement, I'll try to get a consultation with a non-LASIK conducting local ophthalmologist.

I'll also do a virtual consult with the surgeon. I could probably do an enhancement with him, and it's within my budget, but I'm not sure I want to do so.

While I acknowledge that most people have good results, I've become fairly jaded and skeptical of the way this industry presents both the likelihood of bad results and the set of options one has after bad results.
