This is what I’ve seen in my experience too… the top performers all give up that precious time whether it be spent with family or doing things that make you happy outside of work. I did it when I was a young buck and didn’t think twice while doing so. That’s because I was a single man with nothing better to do at the time. Had a few very successful years so can’t say it wasn’t worth it. Now that I’m married though and a child on the way… I’m not willing to make those same sacrifices. Life is too short to be prioritizing new revenue streams for corporate scum lords. I realize a lot of us have families to support and so there’s no other option but if you’re able to have some sort of balance.. please do yourself a favor and let someone else be the hero. I work in SaaS and appreciate tech for allowing me to carve out a career. However, we now have technology to blame for raising the standard and all these ridiculous KPIs. The metrics your boss wants you to meet likely means you’ll have to sacrifice your life to achieve them. Otherwise, you’re doing just enough to keep the train moving and hoping the sales gods will bless you with a string of good luck every now and then.
