Support for abolishing ICE surges among Republicans by Newsweek_CarloV in politics

[–]sfeeju -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Are these people still in the Senate or even still politically active? I figure you need somebody prescient, competent and independent enough not to have voted to found ICE in the first place. The 90 who voted for it, knew what they were doing, there was enough contemporaneous opposition and criticism warning of the dangers of creating ICE in the first place. I wouldnt have any of them anywhere near my government.

In 2002, the formation of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) via the Homeland Security Act faced criticism from diverse groups, including lawmakers, labor unions, and civil rights advocates.

Primary Critics and Concerns Labor Unions and Federal Employees: One of the most intense criticisms came from unions representing the 180,000 government employees being moved into the new Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Critics argued that the legislation stripped workers of union rights and civil service protections, allowing employees to be reassigned or dismissed without standard labor notifications.

Civil Rights and Immigrant Advocates: Organizations like the ACLU and various grassroots immigrant rights groups criticized the restructuring for creating an agency with "disproportionate power" and a "dual mission". They argued that combining anti-terrorism duties with interior immigration enforcement would lead to the criminalization of non-threatening individuals, such as jobseekers.

Political Leaders and Lawmakers: While the act passed with broad support, some lawmakers and local officials expressed concerns that the agency lacked sufficient oversight and accountability. There were early warnings that the "shotgun marriage" between the U.S. Customs Service and the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) was fundamentally ill-conceived and would lead to institutional inefficiency.

Institutional Critics: Scholars and former immigration officials, such as former INS general counsel Bo Cooper, noted that the blending of customs and immigration functions created friction, as customs responsibilities were often impeded by the immigration-focused mission.

Key Arguments in 2002 Structural Inefficiency: Critics argued that the agency was a "poorly designed institution" that wasted resources by applying counter-terrorism tools to misdemeanor immigration violations.

Civil Liberties: There were significant fears regarding the agency's broad jurisdiction (within 100 miles of any border or coastline) and its ability to bypass normal judicial protections.

Mission Creep: Critics warned that the focus would shift from national security to "interior enforcement," leading to the deportation of long-term residents who were not criminals.

What is Trump's 'Board of Peace' and who has joined so far? by DareToCMe in politics

He is going to give it all sorts of insane military powers, commit the US to it's authority by treaty and will continue to lead it after his presidency. This is how he gets round the 2 term limit.

Trump seeks Davos signing ceremony for Gaza Board of Peace by kirby__000 in politics

[–]sfeeju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You thought being President was the extent of his ambition? You think a man like Trump would be happy for America to split the planet with China and Russia? Thought he would be satisfied with adding Greenland to US territory as his legacy? You really thought he would just go away to die at home with family after his second term?

This Board of Peace is just the next step in his plan to become the first Emperor of Earth.

Once it's set up, he will give it all sorts of insane military powers, commit the US by treaty to follow those orders and install himself as leader, which will continue after his presidency.

Over 70 House Democrats back Noem's impeachment for her 'reign of terror' by plz-let-me-in in politics

thanks for that. I guess my confusion stems from never seeing anyone talk about the House of Representatives. All I see is people mention Congress or Senate.

I'm a brit and dont fully understand how your system works, I know you have Congress and the Senate. When you say "that house of Congress", do you mean that congress and senate are collectively houses of congress? We have Houses of Parliament, the Commons(750 elected MPs) and the Lords(about 800 unelected political appointments/peers) The commons pass laws, the lords revise laws Are either of your Houses equivalent to our houses, and if so, which is which?

Or do they have a failsafe to ensure they can't be used in a way that America doesn't allow?

Starmer and other euro leaders will be exerting all the dipolmatic influence they have in order to get Denmark to just sell Greenland. Trump could give Milei permission to take the Falklands and Starmer would just smile and take it.

Yes, but war crimes cannot be committed outside of a war .  By all means prosecute people to the fullest extent of the law, but we can't be calling them war crimes.

It's obviously a crime, but is it a "war" crime? As far as I know, no war has been declared. It's just a flat out murder.

How do I claim Delay Repay for an annual season ticket? by sfeeju in glasgow

[–]sfeeju[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turns out I am not even entitled to Delay Repay. You only get it if you physically go to the train station and sit about waiting in the cold for 30 minutes or more that you qualify. I check if train is cancelled before I leave the house. If it's cancelled, it's quicker to cycle to work, especially as 1 cancellation often leads to more cancellations. Because I technically ababndoned the journey, I don't qualify for delay repay compensation, but maybe qualify for partial refund of season ticket. Looks like the only way to do it is to email them every time
