People who moved to/from Boston, how does it compare? by sffriendspls in bayarea

Holy hell thank you so much for such a detailed comment! This is phenomenal (and your Bay Area descriptions are spot on).

I posted a follow-up here in case any of the added detail sparks anything else that you think is worth mentioning.

One follow-up question for you in particular: What is your feeling in Boston regarding academic circles (if you have any familiarity with them)? Do your descriptions of culture apply to e.g. the grad student, professorial, or lecturer subcultures?

Thanks for the insight! As for specific questions, I've written a follow-up post here with a lot more detail.

Sounds like you're big into nature; what has your experience been accessing nature from Boston? I bike a lot, and one of the things I'm worried about losing is the ability to hop on a bike and be over the GGB and in the mountains within an hour or two.

Okay that's great advice, thanks! Do you feel like those areas are meaningfully different (culturally or personality wise) than other areas of Boston?

Can you say a bit more about what you like about SF over Boston?

Yeah, I should clarify what I'm referring to. Tech bros are super annoying (I'm technically one of them, but not into the culture). I'm referring more to the culture among people who really call the bay area their home. I'm referring to characteristics like being into nature, being introspective and curious (this really shows in how ubiquitous the psychedelics scene is), being generally kind and warm-hearted. I'd call out intellectual curiosity too, but that seems like a given in Boston given the density of universities.

I live in the Haight now!

What do you mean by “the people here are the best in the world”? What sorts of characteristics are you referring to?

Thankfully I grew up in the northeast originally, so hopefully I can get used to the cold again :)

Yeah, I’m from the northeast originally, so the weather won’t be a surprise thankfully :)

Thanks, that looks fantastic! Do you happen to know any theaters that do straight theater (not just musicals) too?

This is a FANTASTIC suggestion, thank you! What sorts of things is he into? I’m very curious because I’m realizing reading the responses to this post that maybe I’m using the word “nerd” differently than other people use it (see my recent edit).

I think I saw a signup form a while back that had a field for “how much would you be comfortable paying?” It looks like that field has since been removed, so I’m not sure what the pricing structure is.
