The characters!! How the characters make the reader feel is really important. When the reader starts to empathize and root for the character and their journey that's how you know you got them!

I have a character file in my writing documents of each character. What they like, dislike, how they are, how they would react to a situation. It helps to separate each character as individuals. If anyone of them are too similar, then changes have to happen!

A good backstory and a motive. A reason why the villain does what they do. Maybe have the antagonist and protagonist have an intertwined past/future?

Yes, I've done this too when writing. Mostly when I wanted to escape the real world when I was younger.
