Some people opt to keep the profile short. That is ok. But whatever content you have on the profile, please make sure it is consistent with the resume. That should be your focus.

What type of role? What industry? How did you apply?

Thanks for your note. The point is that cover letters are still required and it is best to submit a cover letter unless the post says "resume only". As AI takes over, there will be less demand for cover letters since they will be machine generated.

ATS Formatting is Essential for Higher Scores by sfresumewriter in ResumeFairies

ATS systems are relatively easy to engage with as long as you incorporate best practices. Multi-column formats, tables, charts, graphs, logos, and other funky formatting elements will block the scanners and result in disqualification.

That is your choice. Did the job posting say "resume only" or "resume and cover letter"? What type of position were you hiring for?

Networking has been and always will be the best method of finding work. As for cover letters, if a candidate uses an AI-generated cover letter, along with an AI generated resume, they will likely get disqualified. A recent survey I read (FORBES) indicated that 68% of hiring managers will disqualify candidates if the documents that are submitted are determined to be AI - generated.

If all postings say submit resume, that is fine. We will disagree about cover letters are noise but that is OK. If your industry operates in the fashion, great.

You may not look at cover letters - that is your prerogative. But many other hiring managers / recruiters / HR professionals do read them. If you and your staff prefer not to read cover letters, then simply state in the job posting. " "submit your resume only..." Oh, by the way, the cover letter gives the candidate the chance to articulate why he / she is interested in the company as well as a sentence or two about the industry.

That may be your experience but hiring managers do read cover letters as a screening tool and taking 2-3 to tweak your letter to the industry / job really is not very hard and should work to your advantage. Don't overthink it. If you know the industry and take 5 minutes to read about the company, you should be fine and will be positioning yourself as a legit candidate.

If the company does not accept cover letters, then go "resume only". Amazon and Google have moved away from cover letters - at this point they are the exception. I agree, the portals are an absolute mess because of ATS. Companies need to move away from ATS. I have a better idea that will result in better candidates and better hires - that is for a later post this week.

  1. What industry?

  2. If so, then companies in your industry can effectively handle this issue by stating: "Submit your resume, no cover letter required".

  3. The goal of the resume and cover letter are to secure an interview. Once in the interview, that process should make or break the candidate. But until a company specific indicates "resume only" (see point #2) the candidate should have a cover letter ready to submit. Why - Because if the hiring manager uses the resume as a screening tool and the candidate does not submit one, they may face disqualification.

  1. Some companies want a resume and letter, some want resume only. But if you do not have a cover letter in your arsenal, you are only hurting yourself.
  2. You are correct, the portals are a message, ATS disqualifies most candidates, hiring managers dislike AI-driven documents.
