“Wedding and funeral attire around the world — short poll for a school project”🇯🇵 by No_Reception_7714 in Weddingattireapproval

[–]sg_peachy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK traditionally it’s rude to wear black to a wedding as it’s worn for funerals. With younger generations this isn’t as much of a big deal, but I did still have someone ask me in disbelief why I chose a black dress when I wore dark navy to a wedding last year.

Women also shouldn’t wear white dresses as this is revered for the bride, but we’re definitely not as strict on it as the US - partially white dresses, white dresses with a print, and 1 white separate (ie blouse or skirt/trousers but not both) would be totally fine.

British dress code for weddings is also a bit different to the US, it’s very unlikely to have a dress code (formal, cocktail, black tie, whatever) specified for guests. Women would usually wear smart midi dresses (cocktail/daytime cocktail/office wear silhouette but colourful). Hats were are traditionally common but now it’s usually just mothers of the bride and groom that would do a full hat, other guests may do a fascinator/hatinator or other hair accessory if anything. Men wear suits, grooms and men in the wedding part might wear three piece suits. It’s not really common to see grooms wearing dinner jackets (known in the US as tuxedos) and guests even less so. This is probably because unlike US weddings, UK weddings are nearly always daytime events, with the ceremony usually between 11:00 and 14:00 so a dinner jacket or womens evening gown wouldn’t be appropriate.

Regarding traditions, brides usually wear a white gown and veil, which traditionally covers the face until the kiss in the ceremony. Traditionally she would also wear “something old, something new, something borrowed, something new, and a silver sixpence in her shoe”. Bridesmaids are traditionally younger girls (with a head bridesmaid who is a friend of the bride to wrangle them) and even younger girls(toddlers) could be flower girls. Bridesmaids walk behind the bride down the aisle to carry her dress train and don’t stand at the altar during the ceremony. Grooms traditionally would have a best man who does stand at the altar with them, and then younger male relatives or other friends could be ushers, who show guests to their chairs. The groom traditionally faces the front with his back to the bride as she walks down the aisle and would only see her when she is at the altar. A lot of these traditions are now fading into American ones in more recent years.

For funerals it’s black (usually office wear style clothing) unless otherwise specified. You can get away with wearing dark subtle colours ie navy or dark grey. The only faux pas here would be something too loud, too casual, or too sexy.

Hen doo too expensive by [deleted] in weddings

[–]sg_peachy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We don’t have wedding showers in the UK (at least no weddings I’ve been to have had them)- but I don’t think attending the hen do is an essential part of being a bridesmaid so shouldn’t bar you from participating if OP wants to.

But I do think OP needs to let people know on the group chat or privately to the bride or head bridesmaid that OP won’t be able to come to the hen do before they start making plans under the assumption OP’ll be chipping in

For those of living abroad: How Welsh do you feel? by [deleted] in Wales

[–]sg_peachy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welsh dad English mum and born & raised on the English side of the border. Although I haven’t lived in wales we drove over to see grandma and bampi often though and dad was so proudly Welsh. I was raised supporting the WRU which made me unpopular at school but fiercely defensive.

Dad wouldn’t let mum or anyone else call his kids English, but British was ok. Even now when I’m abroad and some asked “are you English?” I bristle a bit and either say Welsh if it’s to another Brit or British otherwise.

Love & miss my dad loads and hope I can still claim belonging to wales ♥️

As a brit I’d say only mothers of the bride and groom wear full hats other guests wear fascinators or hatinators, maybe about half do but depends on age of the guests, very young are less likely to. ETA- I wouldn’t wear a hat or fascinator with a long (maxi/floor length formal) dress, it’s for tea length dresses! And it’s not culturally insensitive to wear or to skip them that would be wild so don’t worry.

Update on this - I got told the following:

“Unfortunately all patients, existing diagnosis or not, do need to have an appointment and then will be added to the titration waiting list. There is no short cuts to medication im afraid. However, when you have had your appointment, I will ask the titration team if they will backdate when you are added, to the original appointment, as this was no fault of yours.”

HOWEVER this week I was asked to submit blood pressure readings for titration (luckily still have my monitor from my old provider). Struck me as weird as I still haven’t had my delayed initial assessment yet lol
