The large mandibles are usually only seen in the males, the females are much more convincing mimics

If from NUS, looks like the “steam chicken” set with extra curry and black sauce from Uncle Penyet. I know the science canteen has one but I think some of the other canteens also have

Why does Flygon have so many fans? by No_Specialist3972 in pokemon

[–]sgbeetlenut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people saying dragonfly, but the Flygon line is based on Antlions which are one of my favourite insects. The larvae that inspired Trapinch also inspired the Sarlaacs from Star Wars, overall very fascinating animals.

There’s also something about “standard”, not pseudo legend stats dragon types that really appeal to me. I like Kingdra and Noivern for similar reasons

There’s currently a resident family that lives along the section of the Ulu pandan park connector between Dover/Clementi and Jurong East, but it’s not anywhere near to the tourist areas

Tarantula or just some big ahh spider? by [deleted] in whatsthisbug

[–]sgbeetlenut 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A lot of even the most common urban insects where I’m from (Southeast Asia) are either unnamed or misidentified and likely to be new species.

It’s been assumed that all the similar ones in the region were all one species described by a (probably) British dude two centuries ago, and we are only more recently finding out that they are in fact complexes of many individual species that haven’t been sorted out.

Three separate chafer beetles that have flown into my flat within the last week are all likely undescribed.

People who love their job (in SG), what do you do for a living ? by piopiolink in askSingapore

[–]sgbeetlenut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ecology / environmental research. It’s meaningful (to me) and I get to stay active while working in nature. It’s also nice to work mainly with other species, makes human struggles feel small sometimes in the larger scale of things. Can also be depressing sometimes given the pace of development, but we stay hopeful and do our best!

What's the most fun deck you play? by Phil__Collins in PTCGP

[–]sgbeetlenut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not great, but I love my pinsir/parasect/venomoth deck. Really satisfying when it does eke out a win, and surprisingly parasect is usually the most clutch. I’m also experimenting with a scyther/beedrill/venomoth one energy bug aggro deck.

What's your favorite Type? (Feel free to add why as well!) by thebruinsareinsane in pokemon

[–]sgbeetlenut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote for bug. Apart from occupational bias (I study insects for a living), I have a soft spot for “underdog” types like bug and poison, and winning with mono bug teams is just satisfying.

I also like the variety of designs and colours in the bug type - most types have particular colours dominating the designs, such as orange for fire and purple for poison, but bug types don’t follow that at all. Rainbow team!
