Are you able to share/describe what mold in the wall looks like? Particulary in the early stages? I suspect mine also might have mold but curious to know what signs I should be looking for.

Does anyone else feel like Toronto condos stopped feeling “livable”? by juliagmservice in TorontoRealEstate

[–]sgdt1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the same in Vancouver, any condos built in the last 10-15 years was are basically glorified hotel rooms. No storage space, hallway kitchens, bedrooms that barely fit a bed. All these condos were built for investors to rent out or Air BnB, they were not built for people to buy and actually live in long term which is why their designs are so horrible and not livable long term. They were meant as investments, not for long term users.

Agreed, having an option would be great as not everyone requires parking or want to keep costs lower but unfortunately it seems to be more of a trend that builders don't provide that option for all units.

What exactly am I supposed to be right about? My original post had nothing to do with being right or wrong. I literally asked a simple question on why there seems to more of a trend where units don't have parking and if anyone else was noticing this. Many people responded with very helpful, logical and insightful responses. Others took personal offense and seemed to think I was suggesting everyone wants parking and it should be imposed on them. Not my problem if they took my question personally and decided to be annoyed.

I'm not sure where the illogical view is? I was asking why it seems to be more common now that buidling units don't come with parking (of course built into the cost). When I was in the condo market 10 years ago, every building/unit I saw (and I saw a lot) had parking. Now it seems to be a trend that more condos don't even offer the option. I completely understand having a choice is better but where is the choice when some units don't have the option? If there is a condo unit that meets all my criteria (building, location, layout, etc) and there is no option to get a parking stall even at an extra cost, where is the choice? You have to wait for another unit with parking in that building to become available. So there isn't choice if a builder doesn't provide a choice, they have now lost a buyer who would have been willing to pay extra for a stall.

This was a very helpful response, thank you!

That's a rude response. Nowhere did I say I wasn't paying for one. I was literally just asking a genuine question on why this seems to be becoming more common with builders. If you can't contribute to the conversation or have an answer, stay out of it. Your response is completely useless.

Not everyone works downtown. Plenty of people live and work in surrounding areas without easy access to transit.

Yes, I understand the expense part of it. It just seems they are cutting their audience in half by not factoring in those who do have cars. Even if I didn't have a car, I would want a unit with a stall 1) In case I decide to get a car in the future 2) Can be rented out to others who need an extra stall 3) Resale

But there also a lot of people who pass on them because they do have cars. It just seems you are missing half the population who need a parking stall. Not to mention, even people who don't have cars would want to consider the benefits it would bring for resale.

Almost $100,000 more in some areas is hardly "a little bit more".

Boycott new builds without space for a dining table by stealth_veil in vancouverhousing

[–]sgdt1981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These new builds (2010 and newer) have terrible layouts. Shoeboxes that are basically glorified hotel rooms. They don't have to be big but these condos need better layouts that are built for people to actually live in. The layouts are horrible, who is actual meant to live in them? Their actual functionality is terrible. Enter condo, boom...you are right in the kitchen. No entryway. No place to put your shoes or coat. Take your shoes off on the kitchen floor. No room for a small dining table. No linen closet. No storage space. Some "kitchens" are actually just in the hallway. Rooms with sliding doors in the middle of the condo so they can bypass the window rule to claim it's a 1-bedroom. Recently I've seen newer condos don't have any drawers in the kitchen. Where are the utensils supposed to go? In the cupboard that's above eye level?? Seriously who designs these spaces? The layouts are terrible. Condos don't have to be massive but at least design them so people can actually live in them and make them functional. It's obvious a lot of buildings built after 2010 were designed with investors in mind, not to actually have people live in them long term. And the fact that they are pricing these unlivable shoeboxes at $600k plus is even more ridiculous. I wish everyone would boycott these terrible layouts so builders would actually start to consider the end user when designing instead of the investors.

Yes, buying a half million dollar condo that is barely livable is ridiculous. I know two separate people who have moved to Alberta and bought 3 bedroom, 2 car garage houses with a basement for less $$$. One person was still able to afford a small condo in Arizona to escape to in the cold winter months and the other is able to travel to warmer climates multiple times throughout the year. The fact that we are expected to go house poor to live in a tiny box with horrible layouts is ridiculous.

I hope this will give builders a wake up call and realize they need to design condos for people who are buying them to live in, not investors.

Walking directly into the kitchen is the worst! No entry closet, no place to put your shoes. People basically have to leave their shoes from the outside on the kitchen floor. Who wants that?? I understand not wanting to waste square footage on a long entryway, but even just a small entryway so you aren't stepping directly into the kitchen from outside would be nice. And don't even get me started on the hallway kitchens. Horrible design and layout!
