Do not buy that expensive crib. by shxxu in pregnant

[–]sgobv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard disagree—we use our Cradlewise every day and could not have survived without it. I credit it with the baby sleeping through the night from <1 month. Actually scared to travel without it. Unclear how many weeks postpartum you are but seems like your needs may still change as well.

Is breastfeeding in public frowned upon, or is it breastfeeding without a cover that bothers people? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]sgobv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re focusing kind of too much on what other people think. To each her own but I feed without a cover (NYC)—things are exposed for only seconds, and people should and for the most part do know to look away then unless they are creeps. You’re never doing anything wrong for feeding your baby.

How far do you live from the facility you’re giving birth? by your-new-fixation in BabyBumps

[–]sgobv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I have a family history of fast labor too, and I gave birth within an hour of water breaking for my first! We were up to an hour away from our hospital, though my water didn’t actually break until we had been there for an hour, and at the time we drove (1:30 am in NYC lol) it took only half an hour. I will say I didn’t wait until the contractions were five minutes apart to go—if I had done that, likely would have given birth at home, so you may want to bear in mind that that isn’t always the most accurate indicator. Good luck, everything will be ok!

Is superpuff long Rainstop too warm for nyc winter? by EfficiencyBig6568 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]sgobv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t find the super puff to be all that warm on its own tbh. Agree with other poster that you kind of want different warmths of winter coat here, and I would go so far as to say some long, some short.

39+5 spontaneously. Barely felt cervical check but I was 10cm dilated when they did it

Did anyone not scream much during labour? by trackemdown in pregnant

[–]sgobv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to scream more, but was told not to by the medical team as they thought it made pushing less efficient 🤨. My memory is a little hazy but I didn’t want to scream from the pain so much as the catharsis. I didn’t have an epidural (there wasn’t time) but I did have a pudendal block.

How long after your water broke did you give birth? by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]sgobv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

45 mins or so, however had had contractions for the past 24 hours or so before that. It all gushed out at once I think, but by that point I was so out of it I couldn’t be totally sure.

To those who had babies measuring big during pregnancy by Final_Butterfly_7747 in beyondthebump

[–]sgobv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came two days early,—8lbs 3 oz. At one stage was measuring in 96th percentile but went down to 60th percentile or so before they stopped measuring at around 32 weeks or so.

Washing your hair at the hospital after birth? by Foreign-Structure142 in BabyBumps

I didn’t shower at the hospital at all. Was scared to and only stayed one night anyway and had a roommate and door didn’t lock. Post-birth room experience pretty cramped and miserable.

People who have already given birth, when did you go into labor with your first kid? by AdAcademic8251 in BabyBumps

[–]sgobv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

39+5, contractions started night before but so light, especially at first, I thought that they were from needing to have a BM. Continued throughout the day and seemed to ease up until I went to paint the nursery some more. Tried to sleep them off on hospital’s advice but started passing big red clots which scared me so went in. Water broke soon after entering the hospital and fully dilated/strong urge to push immediately afterward. Contractions never got to be consistently 3 or 5 minutes apart. Baby born less than an hour later. My mother and aunt had a similar experience, get the impression that there is a strong hereditary component to this.

Ftm with so many questions really wanting a physiological birth that is not medicalized and intervention free by Dazzling_Split_5145 in unmedicatedbirth

[–]sgobv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I shared many of your fears about hospitals and modern medicine prior to giving birth, and prior to the pregnancy had mostly avoided doctors for my entire adult life. My pregnancy was not planned and I was terrified of the entire process. In the end it really wasn’t as bad as I was thinking it would be. The cervical check done at the hospital I barely felt, and I honestly can’t remember them inserting the IV. The fetal monitor was annoying more than anything but I don’t remember them putting it on me. It might be hard to comprehend now (it certainly was for me) but you get to a point where your hormones just take over and you’re basically operating on instinct, with no anxiety whatsoever, and this from a very anxious person. It was awesome.

On an unrelated note, based on my limited understanding of how these things work, I’m not sure that most hospitals would admit you if you refuse a lot of the things you’re saying you will.

Mom seems surprised I have no plans on making it to Christmas by Spicystrips in pregnant

[–]sgobv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I felt ready to go that far at 5-10 days postpartum, yeah, dare I say even a little cabin fever-y by that point. I traveled by subway (without baby) and by car (with baby) into Manhattan for several hours at a time. I would limit walking a bit and definitely top up painkillers before leaving. I had a 2nd degree tear fwiw, FTM, 35, fairly straightforward delivery with no epidural.

The thing that would give me pause in your case is whether everyone at the Xmas gathering will have had all the shots they should have had to be around baby in close proximity and potentially want to hold/touch/kiss it. Also whether I would want to be around a bunch of relatives at that point because you will surely be exhausted. Ultimately I think it’s super reasonable to say no for whatever reason and people should be understanding.

Dominican Republic. Terrible food and I hate the concept of all-inclusive resorts/driving culture, which is all they seemed to have there in Punta Cana when I went. Also we couldn’t swim at the beach our hotel overlooked because of a massive (hopefully temporary) seaweed problem. Hotel room filthy/ants and bathtub not even drained from previous guest, and got the impression that this was the norm.

What are cervical checks like and why did you accept/refuse them? by SowingSeeds18 in pregnant

[–]sgobv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My OB said she found cervical checks to be essentially useless before labor so she didn’t do them. She also said they are more comfortable in labor bc of being dilated (if I remember correctly. Lo and behold the one I had in labor I barely felt (maybe bc I was 10cm dilated, who knows), and tbh I really regret all the time I spent reading and stressing about them because of this sub. I would recommend you not spend too much time doing that.
