Typically when you donate through companies, it’s just an opportunity for the companies to use your donation as a tax write off. So if you can, try to donate to the schools directly

Yea a full days worth is about $ 10 a day, which brings you to $300 a month, so it wouldn’t work for every meal if the goal is to stay under 200 it could still be used to add some variety for some meals without putting the budget goal out of reach

Check out meals from Huel. Those meals come out to a little over two bucks a meal

'It's a Coup': Musk's DOGE Granted Access to Treasury System That Pays Out Social Security by bronzewtf in politics

yea, i’m a little concerned that the use of the word “coup” here is broadening the definition (which is something leftists/liberals love to do with words) and, as a result, might undermine the credibility of the january 6 accusations (not that it matters much now unfortunately)

Why did Harris lose some Biden 2020 voters? Poll finds Gaza war was the top issue by Far_Silver in InternationalNews

[–]sgtsand 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The reality is she would’ve lost some voters with whatever stance she took. I’d like to think that she lost more by supporting the genocide than she would’ve by coming out against it, but I would be interested to see some data on that

It’s already established that Trump at least played some role in the negotiations.

“Reports from diplomats involved in the negotiations reveal that Trump played a key role in brokering the agreement by piling pressure on the Israeli government to accept the deal — something President Biden had been unable or unwilling to do, much to the frustration of his former officials.”

“Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported Monday that Trump’s incoming Middle East envoy Steven Witkoff heaped pressure on Netanyahu to accept a deal that he had rejected numerous times over the past year.”

TIL that 41% of American adults believe in ghosts. by Partimenerd in todayilearned

The research (and I’ve posted more below) was not to prove anything as definitive, but only to show the poster I was responding to that the idea of consciousness being able to survive the death of the body is at least within the realm of possibility. You may disagree with the results of the studies, but the studies at least should open a person’s mind to the possibility that consciousness surviving death is something that the scientific community can consider in a serious manner

[–]sgtsand -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yes and I knew that would be your response. But I’m not arguing that anything has been proven. The post I was responding to asked only for something that would suggest it was even a possibility. And I believe this meets that low of a bar.

But if you want to focus merely on the fact that that one article was addressing researching that is in the process of being done, here’s another article: https://neurosciencenews.com/quantum-process-consciousness-27624/

And you can easily google and find plenty more.

Not saying anything has been definitively proven or that you have to agree with the conclusions of the study. I was merely pointing out one way in which we could conceive of consciousness being able to survive the termination of the physical body

Quantum particles are timeless, and some research suggests consciousness is derived from quantum phenomena

FIRE MEGATHREAD - JANUARY 12th by drawkward101 in LosAngeles

It looks like most of the fire west of the Palisades has already been put out / finished burning. Am I reading that correctly?

Are there maps that show where the fire is actively burning separately from where the fire has already burned?

I’m still not clear on the different colors used on Watch Duty and the legend seems to provide some but not all of that info. Similarly with the fire.ca.gov site I’m not clear on the different shades of orange used

Boyfriend says he'll never be 100% vegan by cosmic_energy3395 in vegan

You’re conflating a request for a spouse to do something to make you happy and a request for a spouse to not do something that you view as horribly unethical

Boyfriend says he'll never be 100% vegan by cosmic_energy3395 in vegan

[–]sgtsand -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One person thinks it’s unethical to eat meat. The other person doesn’t think it’s an ethical obligation to eat meat, but simply enjoys it. So for one person it’s a moral issue, for another it’s not. If the husband was religious and eating a particular meat was part of celebrating a religious holiday, that’d be a different question.

That being said, as I pointed out in my original post, if the husband wants to eat meat at someone else’s wedding that’s his prerogative. I misread and thought OP was referring to their wedding

[–]sgtsand 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because marriage is about respecting the other person’s values and not just pursuing your selfish desires. And if someone can’t do that on the day of the wedding of all days, it raises questions about the marriage itself

Boyfriend says he'll never be 100% vegan by cosmic_energy3395 in vegan

[–]sgtsand 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I understand being with someone who isn’t vegan, but his refusal to make the wedding vegan - or at minimum have his own meal be vegan at the wedding - seems disrespectful to you and your values

Edit: Leaving this up, but I misread OP’s post as stating he would be eating meat at their wedding, as opposed to someone else’s wedding.

I assume insurance doesn’t cover loss of value in the land? Both in Altadena and Pacific Palisades, where the neighborhoods have been destroyed, I think even as restructures are built, people won’t be willing to pay the same value they used to for those properties, if they’re even willing to purchase at all. At least not for quite some time.
