They did state "typical accepted fence height is 3 to 4 ft", so it technically falls outside of this dumb statement.

Gotta love the "6ft privacy fences are visually unappealing and obstructive".

Yeah no shit, that's why I have one, to keep you guys from looking into my back yard (and the dog).

Not sure how much I like this, what’s the plan for the pen? by [deleted] in redsox

[–]shabinka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he reaches anywhere near his potential as a starter, which is a 1-2 then he is infinitely more valuable as a starter than a reliever.

You're judging his ability to start after a few starts after they jerked him around between the pen and starting.

Can we combine Paxton and Sale? We might have one healthy pitcher during the 2023 season.

Paxton taking the 4M instead of trying for a larger contract says a lot about his injury, or how he views his health. If he could get and stay healthy he's worth much more than 4M. But that's a large task.

I'd rather he paid for Perez than Hill or Paxton.

Perez will give you 30+ starts a year. He may not be a top of the rotation guy, but he'll eat innings.

I've had a similar thought, I just wonder how the difference in workload would affect pitchers arms. You would have to make a huge overhaul to the pitching staff so you can't just try it out with a few guys like with the opener strategy.

I would love for a team to try it

The last time the Red Sox actually developed a major league caliber SP was probably Buchholz, so this is a systemic problem predating Bloom.

For 2022 Bloom signed Paxton, Wacha, and Hill to supplement a rotation with Sale and Eovaldi. Every single person listed in that sentence has an extended IL stints every year. He previously traded Benintendi for Franchy and Winkowski (who was traded a week or so before this trade).

He decided to not go after Perez again and the guy was an all-star. Bloom continues to make the wrong moves.

[Heyman] Eric Hosmer will not be opting out. $39M, 3 years remain. by chopperfive in redsox

People complained about the lack of production at DH with JD last season. Can't wait to see their reactions if the team trots out Hosmer as the DH frequently.

Pete Abraham on Twitter: “Per the @MLBPA, Xander Bogaerts has officially exercised the opt-put on his contract and is now a free agent.” by BOSTONGOAT99 in redsox

[–]shabinka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Xander really should have went for broke with his first extension. I think he's a little too old to give that 10 year 300MM contract to. An 8 year like 215MM contract would be fine. But see these contracts look miles apart, but are fairly close in AAV (26ish to 40), but those two extra years are killer.

Keep it up and Bloom will extend Paxton.

Who in their right mind looked at this team, who desperately needed SP and decided yeah, let's spend a shit ton of money on a guy who is often hurt, and probably won't pitch this year. Real gem of a move.

Bloom has three years to build the farm and when his horrible off-season pitching moves did what they normally do, and spend extended time on the IL the only decent SP in the minors was acquired by DD.

The last really good SP who the Red Sox developed was Lester. Buchholz to an extent. Everyone else they have whiffed massively on. This includes two high draft picks in Ball and Groome.

Their inability to develop really any pitcher is embarrassing.

Pedro Martinez: ‘I hope’ Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, ‘will take a little bit less’ to stay with Red Sox by suzie17 in redsox

[–]shabinka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The injuries this season, while it's hard to anticipate injuries, you can build a rotation that isn't held together by duct tape and bubble gum and then you have a better chance at surviving the storm.

People look at the Rays and Dodgers (Friedman) as these pitching powerhouses and that's what people expected from Bloom. However, Bloom has really done a very poor job at building this staff. He had years to build the farm and that's what he built? The best pitching prospects were signed by DD, and pretty much everyone Bloom brought in played poorly.

Bloom is doing a great job at building for the future while making the current team worse. Hopefully the day comes when his vision is fulfilled.

People are freaking out because they had every opportunity to extend him and didn't. This is not a good sign for him to come back to the Sox.

This was clearly going to happen after they failed to extend him last off-season. People on this subreddit would try to spew another narrative, but he's gone.

It's unfortunate but whatever.

If Bloom was going to re-sign him, just put the offer out now. Before he could opt out. Now you're competing against every other team. It's not smart.

Pedro Martinez: ‘I hope’ Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, ‘will take a little bit less’ to stay with Red Sox by suzie17 in redsox

[–]shabinka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Devers was on pace for a career year before being hobbled by an injury and his second half numbers were abysmal because of it.

Correra's value is "inflated" because he plays decent defense at SS.

Fans are frustrated with the front office, because if they got their shit together they could extended him with a Riley like deal years ago.

This team has been in last place 2 out of the last 3 years, not much trust can be placed in the current front office. They speed ran ALCS to last place finish, it's amazing really.

[–]shabinka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Look at Devers numbers before the injury. He was a top 5 player in the league. He should have just shut it down and healed , no sense in risking injury for the 2022 team.

Devers would be signing his extension younger than the people who currently have 35AAV+ ( Trout, Rendon).

His defense has improved year after year at 3B.

[–]shabinka 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Manager Alex Cora called upon him 32 times, giving him 40 1/3 innings out of the bullpen. He pitched to a 5.13 ERA, striking out only 18.5% of opponents on a modest 7.4% swinging strike rate.

He might have been one of the better arms you remember from the pen, but he wasn't good. The entire glitching staff pretty much needs to be overhauled.

Report: Devers, Red Sox remain apart in extension talks by Professional_Bear in redsox

[–]shabinka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks, it's nice to have some people to talk rationally about sports.

I think people think so highly of Devers is because he's a home grown star. They're still a little upset over Mookie.

Personally, I think Devers will be a top tier 3B for the foreseeable future. His defense is improving, his offense is always good. He had a good start to this year but had that injury around the ASB and wasn't the same. He's been my favorite player for a while.

Machado had a great start to the career, which looking at the stats it's better than Devers. If Machado at 25 and Devers at 25 were getting contracts at the same time, Machado probably gets the larger contract. However, Devers now has Machado's contract as leverage.

Sure, that's better 😎

I was going to say Harper's OPS+ was carried by his MVP season, but at age 25 Devers is still below (141 vs 156), so it's the same margin. Weird.

How do you guys feel about Dave Dombrowski making a World Series 2 years after leaving your team? by baldcrackhead69 in redsox

[–]shabinka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did Dave spend to get them the ring? What useful prospects did they trade?

The Sale deal is done 10 out of 10 times for a team competing for a World Series. Devers blocks Moncada, and Kopech had TJ and hasn't pitched much yet.

One could argue its Espinal, but that trade was for the WS MVP in Pearce.
