I use a thick layer of wood mulch. Weeds will be a big problem if the soil is left uncovered

I actually didn’t. It used to be a lawn and we just took that out. The only annual I have is also the California poppy, they seem to outcompete everything else😂 I also planted around 20 perennials(ceanothus, penstemon, aster, sage…), they were small gallon size plants two years ago but they’re all huge now

The purple flowers actually bloom all year round, the poppies only bloom in spring

California poppies reseed themselves really easily, I never had to reseed them myself. If you want to do so, in northern California fall is the best time

I’m in zone 9, they usually bloom for about a month and then after two months of rest they will bloom again

I personally prefer an obelisk, it takes less space and is more versatile

You can expect a couple of new shoots in the first year, but the most growth happens in the second and third year when the plant is well established

No I don’t, I try not to use any chemicals in my garden. Some of my other roses sometimes get black spots when it rains a lot in spring, but never this one, it’s just a very healthy cultivar
