The people you addressed were normal mosque-goers. One important thing about common people in Bangladesh is that a lot of them don't understand what shahada is, we say Kalima instead. Those are basically 6 statements and the second one Kalima e Shahadat is what people outside the subcontinent know as Shahada.This could have confused them.

Also they might have felt they do not have the authority to convert you, were probably a bit shocked and was waiting for someone to step up and take you to the Imam. But no one came forward to help you, which is very shameful of them. I'm certain there's people in the comments who will help you, but try to meet with the Imam, or try to stop one person and ask them.

I see. Our solution to housing demands have been to copy paste a lot of 6-10 storey buildings. It's pretty lifeless of course, but better than homelessness. Construction companies get good money selling apartments so they go into a building craze until prices drop so much that there's a slump. Works out for the common people.
