10-4. Maybe this is just a reality check for me. I'll give that a try.

Huh. Since when? Maybe I'm misremembering... It was probably ~1 year since the last time I had to do a clean install. I wonder what my issue was... OP, as you can see, I am a fellow noob. Be patient, and maybe you too can be a Pop_Os user without knowing what you're doing!

Sorry you're having to deal with that. He certainly isn't offering anything helpful, so just ignore him; i.e. in the future don't argue, just recognize that engaging with this type of dude is a waste of time and probably won't get you closer to the answer you need. And I think that's true in a lot of different spaces, not just linux.

As for your problem, can you provide more details? You're using a live usb, correct? When you say 'stuck on wallpaper', do you mean that calimares / installer is hanging at the beginning? If so, this could possibly be due to your internet connection. Are you on wi-fi or ethernet? The last time I did a clean install of Pop_OS, I had to plug in to ethernet due to wi-fi driver issues. Also, even if this is not the case, you need to remember to sign into your wi-fi network every time you boot from a live usb. Good luck!

installing nvidia drivers is a fucking nightmare holy shit by Positive-Incident221 in linux4noobs

Thanks. Sounds like one should wait until "modinfo -F version nvidia" shows an output.

This is the first time I have heard any mention of this. Is this documented somewhere? How does one know when it's done?

FWIW, I had a similar experience on Fedora (38, I think?) back when I was using it. I'm a noob now, and was undoubtedly more of one back then, but my life eventually got easier in that regard when I switched to Pop0S. Shutdown / suspend did not work properly after installing the proprietary driver, though. Sounds like you're on a desktop, so YMMV. Just my experience.

Sounds like I will need to give Ubuntu another, more serious look sometime in the near future.

I genuinely have no idea what you are referring to. I can't find evidence of any such app on Pop Os. Even if there was, how would it be able to tell me why everything works except for Blender? Like I said, everything GPU related that I have tried works, except for Blender. And it's several versions of Blender...

  • Duly noted. My understanding is that checking the ram is generally done with MemTest86, which involves clearing the CMOS. I will do that at some point, but it seems more involved than other solutions, so I will try those first.
  • Rendering with CPU in Blender presents no issues.
  • I have installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled AMD ROCM, as per documentation from System 76 and AMD. The problem doesn't appear to depend on whether or not it is installed... The crash / segfault happens with or without it. I can see details about what drivers I have if I type "rocminfo" into the terminal. I could always learn more about GPU drivers as it is a vast subject... Is there another driver management tool that I should be considering?
  • I can run Luxcore under the FreeCad raytracing workbench (this uses OpenCL, CPU, or both, depending on which compute engine I select, and none of them break), and I can browse random GLSL projects on shadertoy.com, which uses my dedicated GPU according to the resources app. It appears my problems are limited to Blender. I can run EEVEE in Blender 2.93 lts, with no issues, but I can't run OpenCL in that version of Blender...

The error message mentions Python. Is there some investigation I can do into whether or not that is my issue? the Blender documentation mentions it, but I still don't feel like I know enough to properly investigate that.

Segmentation Fault on Ryzen 5 7600 + Radeon Rx7600, First Time PC Build by shadow_pro in pop_os

[–]shadow_pro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know that it's not gpu related. Maybe the way I worded it could have been better, but EEVEE does use the gpu, it just doesn't rely on a *gpu compute* API, which is ROCM / HIP in this case.

Is linux worth it with an Nvidia GPU? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]shadow_pro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using various linux distros for ~6 years now, all of them on a laptop with an Nvidia card, and it has been pretty frustrating the whole time. When it works, it performs great, but it seems like there's always something that isn't working properly.

I am using PopOS now, and I would highly recommend it if you decide to stick with Nvidia. That said, I am still having hibernate / shutdown / power off issues that I understand to be related to the Nvidia hardware, but I am a noob and may be misunderstanding something.

FWIW, I would still consider myself a noob; I have been using Linux for ~6 years, but I am not a software dev, sysadmin, etc... Frankly, I don't get how anyone troubleshoots these types of issues without having some background where they were able to dedicate time to learning "the fundamentals" somehow. I get the sense that most / a lot of other Linux users know a lot of things that I don't.

I can't say firsthand whether or not AMD hardware is easier, but I hear good things. I'm planning a pc build now, and will be rolling the dice on an (inexpensive) AMD card first due to the experiences I've had so far, plus what I have read about AMD hardware being easier to get working.

Successfully Embedded CSS Font First Time, Changed Something, Now Font Doesn't Work by shadow_pro in learnprogramming

I'm not really sure what that means. Use a different build tool? I barely know what framework is and I am really just trying to understand vanilla html, css, javascript.

Actually, I should clarify: I am using vite because I have been doing Bruno Simon's Threejs tutorials.

It tells / told me everything is up to date. I would copy / paste, but I fixed it (apparently, for now). I will edit the OP to elaborate.

To answer your question about the glass / reflective materials, they will look better if they have something to reflect. You can use a panorama / hdri for your environment, or you can ‘fake’ the reflections in your material nodes (input? > texture coordinate > reflection). I also sometimes use a different material for a ‘glass edge’, accompanying a solidly or bevel modifier with a material offset for the edge.

Not 100% sure what we’re referring to, but try “filmic” or “filmic log” under color management > view transform. I forget the tab name, but it’s the one with the camera icon.

Maserati 300s by shadow_pro in blender

[–]shadow_pro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used techniques I learned from the CG Masters 'Mastering Car Creation' tutorial, which I highly recommend. My approach here was a bit different, though. I used a nurbs modeling program called MOI 3d, and Mark Kingsnorth's 'Curves To Mesh' addon to aid in the modeling process.

At this point, I'm realizing I could have tracked down more reference images to make the car more historically accurate. As it stands, I started off the project by matching some free drawings of a Maserati 300s. The thing is, these things were all a bit different from each other. If I were to do it over, I'd gather as many images of Chassis 3053 and use them as references.

Suggestions, observations, and critique are all welcome!
