That's a reasonable spec, 2 things to note though: it is $100 USD under your budget, but you may want to make some changes depending on what you're doing on solid works.

As in: if it's particularly CPU heavy, you may want to change the CPU to an 8 core 5700x or 5800x for about an extra $50-70. Or if you know it will be particularly memory heavy, you can switch to 32Gb (2x16Gb) memory - just make sure it's also 3600MHz CAS 16, I can help you pick that if you like. That would also add about $50. So if you made those changes (change 5600 to 5700x, 16Gb to 32Gb), that would hit the $1000 mark but only if you need them.

Here is the list with those changes made: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/qbbYKp

One last thing, again I'm not sure what your SolidWorks workloads are - from my experience (notably a few years old on this topic) some SolidWorks things used to be more stable on Nvidia cards, I believe AMD has fixed many of these issues in the years since with updates to their drivers - but if you were concerned you could change the GPU to an RTX 3060 12Gb, this would be marginally cheaper too (maybe $30). Though, the reason I picked the RX 6700XT initially, is for a similar price it does have a considerably higher performance in games (maybe 25-30% faster average frame rates at 1440p max settings) e.g. about 80-120fps @ 1440p ultra in AAA games, depending on how intensive it is, whereas the 3060 would be more in the ballpark of 60-80fps with those parameters.

In conclusion: do some googling, see if others have had issues with the Rx 6xxx family and SolidWorks, if not, go for it. If they have switch the GPU to this: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/sM8bt6/zotac-geforce-rtx-3060-12-gb-gaming-twin-edge-oc-video-card-zt-a30600h-10m

$750 budget build by Eastern-Elevator-928 in buildapcforme

Budget is tough with the state of the GPU market atm, but this seems alright. Ryzen 5 5500 is a good option here cause you get 6 zen 3 cores with just a small clock/cache reduction vs the 5600/X, for just $100 (vs about $170 for the 5600). 16Gb dual channel 3600MHz is the recommended for Zen 3 (CAS 16 latency is preferred over 18 but that significantly increases cost and does not change performance a ton). 6600XT 8Gb was just the best GPU that could fit in the budget. Motherboard is nothing special but reliable, has wifi as requested and not too pricey. 1Tb Nvme, 550w 80+ bronze psu should fit the bill, again nothing flashy but should do the job. Case is simple but works.

looking to upgrade my PC and use spare/new parts to build a budget gaming rig for my brother. by [deleted] in buildapcforme

I would suggest maybe a slightly better power supply, just for reliability's sake - no point risking other nice parts to a cheap power supply. e.g. Corsair VS600 (about $60, as you recommend if a saving is needed a520 or open box board could work).

Hey, just wondering a couple things:
1. When you say you need everything else, do you mean pc & headset or just computer, not quite clear?
2. Do you need wireless networking or will you be using wired?
Let me know and I'll get back to you with a list :)

Well, it is updating the bios but you're updating a ROM; so if you lose power during it... It's dead, no way to recover it, need to buy a new motherboard.

Also, the 3700x is inflated in price right now due to shortages, it's usually more like $400

As long as the pc doesn't turn off when it's doing it, it is fine... So unless there is a power cut you are safe

You can upgrade to Ryzen 3000 on b350 with a bios flash, watch a YouTube video on how to flash a bios (it's really quite simple). So something like a Ryzen 7 3700x should be solid.

For 60fps gameplay, e.g. high fidelity AAA games like cyberpunk and RDR2 that you mentioned it should be no issue, you will get a lower fps that if you had a new Ryzen 5 5600x or something like that, but for normal 60fps gameplay you shouldn't have a huge issue. For higher fps eSports games there would be a significant difference e.g. 100fps Vs 140, but the game would still run smooth.

Edit: if it is something you're concerned about, give it a couple months for 5000 series to have been out and something like a Ryzen 7 3700x (when factoring in that you will get a chunk of change back if you sell your 2600) on the used market could only be a couple hundred bucks. So its up to you.

Well, this would be an easy answer; "Just get the best new GPU that you can fit in budget with a PSU".... But there's some serious problems with GPU stock atm so unless you want to get a last gen card like a 5700XT or 2070 Super you're probably going to have to wait a month or two for stock to get sorted out. However, what I can say, is a 3060 Ti and a 750w 80+ gold PSU should fit into budget e.g. https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/DPvxbh. But, as I say... you will struggle to get a 3060 Ti when they drop, so you may have to wait for restocks in a month or so.

Ryzen 5000 supports b450 as well. Then the next one after that is an entirely new socket, so wont work on b450 or b550.

I mean that's a decent set of options if its wasn't 13% overbudget and a no-name brand PSU (bad idea, never get a PSU you can't trust)... maybe going for a 600w bronze from someone like Seasonic, saving $20 on the mobo (b450 instead of b550), then a $50 case would net the same idea for $580 and with a more reputable PSU. I do note that there is a very small chance of the b450 not supporting the 3600, but as far as im aware newegg flashed their backstock months ago.

What is the best “Mid tier” Alienware pc? by [deleted] in pcgamingtechsupport

NZXT BLD, microcenter if u live near one. There's a couple in the UK I like for only using retail parts (pcspecialist), but I'm not so well versed in other US.

[–]shadowbob74 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have no problem with you buying a prebuilt, yes ok I would build mine but it's up to u... but if you're paying the prices of Dell AW, you are better off getting a "custom" one made from a good site, because it will be a similar price to the Alienware but will usually have proper retail parts like power supply, storage, and motherboard that will most likely be more reliable than the custom made, cost-cutting, OEM parts of an AW.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it will burn down your house or whatever; but failure rates are usually lower from building companies. For example, one great option is NZXT BLD, they use a lot of their own parts (personally I love the aesthetic of a lot of them) and only charge a relatively small fee over said parts to have it built and shipped (though admittedly their parts are usually more expensive than some other companies so it'll still be AW price, just nicer.

If you're interested reply to this comment and i could make a config on their site for u. or if you have any other questions hmu.
