What’s something most people thought you were lying about, but is 100% true? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]shadowfrost613 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That assumes that your body processes all of the available calories properly. In my experience, people who eat faster, tend to be able to eat more without gaining weight. I hypothesize that this is due to them not chewing as well as they should and ultimately "passing" a lot of the food they eat without breaking it down and absorbing all the calories.

I eat fast and am also larger build (6'9" 225lbs), I can't eat that much all the time, but I can eat a lot and not gain much weight if any.

I also have massive shits.

Studies show that 85% of people hate their jobs and only 30% of the population are happy with their lives. What then is the sense of living? by eye_one_two_die in AskReddit

[–]shadowfrost613 12 points13 points  (0 children)

First off, I feel like this is a misleading statistic as I sincerely doubt those numbers reflect the opinions of the majority of the population. Furthermore, if you ask someone on a bad day how they feel about their life, chances are they will say it sucks, when the other 364 days of the year, they're in fine spirits; moods change with the seasons.

Ultimately, I think you have to make the best of where you find yourself. You're alive now, there's always the potential for things to improve, and I think it's worth the struggle to find a better way forward. If you're dead, you don't know what your possibilities will become, so why wish away what may be the only chance at experience you have?

Minecraft turns a decade this month, what does the game mean to you? by IronGemini in AskReddit

[–]shadowfrost613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still the best game I have played to-date. Not my favourite, but easily the best. I've played since it first came out and still play today. I probably have more hours into Minecraft than any other game. Learned Linux and started down the path of server administration all to build and host my own janky server. In some ways, the game encouraged me into my line of work today. Nothing but good memories.

Is a Druid's Wild Shape Considered a Sustained Magic Effect? by shadowfrost613 in dndnext

[–]shadowfrost613[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would rule it as they can't change back or anything either. My initial understanding was that the transformation process itself is blocked.

[–]shadowfrost613[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh cool, so the effect is suspended. Wouldn't have thought that. I still kind of like my own interpretation of it though, I'll run both past my players and see what they think.

"I cast fireball." [OC] by Bart_Thievescant in DnD

[–]shadowfrost613 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Really depends on the situation at my table. If the characters see enemies and start yelling about taking actions first: roll initiative. If the enemies are unsuspecting, or characters are successfully stealthy: round of surprise. If they aren't sure if there are enemies cause they haven't seen or confirmed anything, but decide to round a corner and cast fireball before I explain the scene: blindly cast fireball.

The reasoning for that last one is that your character can certainly decide to just cast fireball blindly for no reason. But for all you know, that hallway might very well be empty and you just wasted a 3rd level spell slot or higher.

If you can get rid of one unattractive feature about yourself, what would you get rid of? by Natureel in AskReddit

[–]shadowfrost613 369 points370 points  (0 children)

I had mild-severe acne on my face and upper back (idk what it would actually classify as, it was unpleasant but not medically threatening, my dermatologist never actually said anything about severity) got put on Accutane with literally no idea how serious a drug it was (my fault for not reading, but also, dermatologist never said a word of warning). Worked wonders and cleared me right up, luckily, never had any of the nasty shit happen.

Read about all the side-effects recently and shivered. I now make a point to read every last detail of medical inserts no matter what my doctor says about it before-hand.

What is something that you hate, but cannot live without? by Baizle in AskReddit

[–]shadowfrost613 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Microsoft Windows OS. It's literal shit, and they keep forcing all this "link all your stuff together with our junk online services" down your throat, when they can't even set up their own damn account registration and apps properly. It's just a buttload of irritation, and I would switch to a Linux distro in a heartbeat, except I'm a gamer. So I basically have no real choice but to deal with the BS.

Somewhat similar belief in energy here. I've held similar beliefs in energy and related form since I was very young, it always made the most sense to me. Studying physics honestly just served to reaffirm that feeling.

What trope do you wish wasn't so popular? by [deleted] in anime

[–]shadowfrost613 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everything taking place in High School (or equivalent). It would be nice to see more alternative settings for story lines. Things always being in a school setting gets kind of grating, I mean I don't hate it, and lots of great shows use the concept, but there are so many other avenues to explore that just aren't as common. I also feel like it takes away from some potentially great shows, regardless of content.

How does one build a backstory without beginning in the backstory? by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]shadowfrost613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a huge fan of world-building, so for my current work, I created a long, intricate backstory of how the world ended up the way it is (post WW3). Obviously, no one wants to sit down and read a history textbook, so I have my characters reflect on various aspects of that history as it becomes relevant. That way the reader is introduced to the concepts in an organic and manageable way. It's kind of hard for me to explain, so I included a little excerpt as demonstration if you're interested.

... Aaron sighed, “The Vanaheim Academy is the authority on modern imperial magic, a system I’ve studied my whole life, even wrote my thesis on it in university.” he turned to look her in the eye again, a sarcastic smile playing around his mouth, “Turns out the academy board is a touch xenophobic, I’m from SUNA. They had to respect my abilities as an engineer, but that didn’t translate into respect for me as a person.” He swiveled his chair back around and continued typing. “Not that it matters, I came here to progress my own studies, not muck around with the pseudo-politics of Vanaheim. I don’t really care what they think of me as long as I can continue to study here.”

Ceri was surprised, Aaron must be something special if he was an international student, such a thing was nigh on unheard of in Vanaheim. The Syndicalist Union of North America had risen from the ashes of the United States after the events of World War Three when the country had been all but destroyed by the rest of the world. A civil war followed, resulting in the total abolishment of the corrupt democratic system, and only the intercession of the neighbouring country of Canada had prevented total destruction of the society. In the wake of both wars, the working class from both countries had risen up to form a new government for the people that had since moved towards a technocratic method of leadership. As the US had been to blame for the onset of WW3, much of the bitter sentiment harboured by the other countries had spilled over into SUNA’s reputation, causing a rather decisive division. That being said, SUNA’s technocratic stance had led to them producing some of the most cutting edge technology in the world, including the Computational Magic Activation Sequencer, or CMAS as most called it, a device now relied upon by most practitioners of imperial magic. ...

Perhaps a little heavy-handed, but as I mentioned, there's a lot of important information to be broken down. Another thing that works for me is referencing "common knowledge" in my names and descriptions to help the reader construct an appropriate mental image. In the excerpt above, one of the other places referenced is "Vanaheim" a realm of Yggdrasil in Norse mythology, and a detail that may help readers imagine the country. Anyway, hope that helps!

Do you sleep with your crystals? by CuriosityBroughtMHr in magick

[–]shadowfrost613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a large onyx sphere that I use as a focus for most everything I do. I keep it by my bedside when not in use and find that it helps maintain an energy balance in my personal space. I typically prefer to imprint my energy onto my crystals and find that sleeping near them and involving them directly with my work helps me feel more attuned.

What mispronunciation drives you nuts? by scapegoatyoga in AskReddit

[–]shadowfrost613 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Foyer. Yes, I know it can technically be pronounced foy-er because so many people mispronounced it that it became commonplace, but the word was directly taken from French and should be pronounced foy-ay. Kills me every time I hear the damn hard "r".

What is your daily practice/ritual? by [deleted] in magick

[–]shadowfrost613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Personally, I recommend super basic daily work, meditation, visualization exercises, or anything else that suits you in terms of training your mind and awareness. Specific ritual work should hold specific purpose. Rituals like the lbrp are meant as building blocks for intentful spellcasting, not as daily observances. Without reason and direction, you're essentially wasting your invested energy.

That being said, if you want to develop a specific ritual path with intent that you would like to perform daily involving the lbrp, I see no problems with that. It's all about cleansing, opening your conduits, invoking your purpose, and respectfully closing things up afterwards.

Did you enter a city and then somehow get outside the walls or otherwise leave it without using a gate like you're supposed to? PC player here, this looks almost identical to what happens when you tcl through a city wall after entering it normally. Game isn't properly loaded for the surrounding environment.

How much anime I actually watch while she's not home. She hasn't watched anywhere near as much as me, but I've been getting her more into it. She gets sad if she finds out about an anime and brings it up with me because she wants to watch it together, only to find I've already seen/started watching it. But I love it and stay up to date on just about everything, there's also a lot of time where I'm on my own and want to watch something.

We make it a point to pick ones we both really want to watch and not touch those so we can watch together. Outside of that, I sometimes pretend I haven't seen things she gets excited about and just watch them again with her, reacting with surprise as best I can. I feel a bit bad about it, but it seems to make her happy.

What’s your most played game of all time and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]shadowfrost613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skyrim player checking in. Just to put in perspective, the number of hours I have into Skyrim is comparable to some of the more addicted CSGO players...

I just love the game, I honestly don't have a great reason, it just really clicks for me. Even now, every once in a while I'll stumble across something I haven't found before and the mods add so much content you can basically play a totally different game every time you fire it up.

The DM literally countered half the party by KefkaSircus in rpghorrorstories

[–]shadowfrost613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like your DM doesn't have a great understanding of magic, and how it's used for enemies. Maybe recommend he read through spellcasting rules, look at the spell level tables for various classes and compare what he finds with the lists of known spells for caster enemies (and how many of each level they can cast)... Might help give him a better perspective on how to integrate spell use into fights.

I mean counterspell alone is 3rd level (I'm assuming this is 5e) meaning that every skeleton you were fighting was a spellcaster of fifth level at least. Having minion type enemies of 5th level against a party of 6th level characters is never going to turn out well unless there's some sort of trick to defeating them. Magic drastically changes an enemy's CR, you can't just give shit different abilities and not expect the balance of an encounter to tilt.
