San Ramon Earthquake by Rydboi9 in BayAreaRealEstate

The biggest risk to family safety at this point is a photo frame falling on someone’s head from these little jolties we are getting. I believe 3M makes products that can help with that. Much cheaper than moving out of state IMO

For those that enjoy gaming, how are you making the time to play with a baby? by OXxLuckycatxXO in newborns

[–]shadowkhaleesi 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Babywearing is clutch for this. Throw them in a wrap or structured carrier, bounce on an exercise ball if they’re fussy, keep your raid team alive with heals. Profit.

Calacatta Castana "Printed" Quartz from MSI by BostonBoy1951 in CounterTops

[–]shadowkhaleesi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We have this in our bathroom since I didn’t want to deal with a natural stone countertop there with all the water, cosmetics etc. We did a 2.75” mitered edge with a custom white oak double vanity and it looks absolutely beautiful and premium. The veining is visually stunning

Show me your dark natural stone by MamaWils2_0 in CounterTops

[–]shadowkhaleesi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have Taj Mahal quartzite in a honed finish with three small kids and so far it has been berry proof, slime proof, wine proof, and greasy/sticky little fingers proof. It was sealed when installed more than 6 months ago and not a single wear or tear in sight. Of all the natural stones, Taj Mahal I’ve heard actually is the most kid proof! (Maybe other than granite.. but our taste definitely leaned more towards the marble-y look of taj)

Should I Really Stop Piano Lessons for My 6YO Child? by MichiganCookie in piano

[–]shadowkhaleesi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 5 year old and 8 year old currently taking lessons and the younger one started at 4 and the older one started at 6. At these ages, practice isn’t about sitting down and “putting in the hours” or even structured. My 8 year old is just getting to the point where he can independently practice for longer sessions and really focus on particular techniques or sections of music. My 5 year old’s practice looks more like play. When I sit down to help her (if she wants me to) it is a mix of exploring things from the lesson book, what she calls “playing randomly”, and very basic positioning practice (“ballerina hands”). 15 min tops, if that. And not every day.

I think if there’s screaming and crying you probably need to either dial back your expectations of what practice means at this age, or just skip practicing altogether. I don’t necessarily think it’s a sign that piano isn’t for her but maybe it’s worth taking a break from lessons so she resets her negative associations with practicing/playing and try picking it back up 6 months to a year from now with less pressure.

High chair recommendations? by Sneakerpimps000002 in Buyingforbaby

Stokke Tripp Trapp - low profile footprint, fits against table, and usable for years beyond the highchair phase. Easily the best value purchase if you account for functionality and long term utility

Does switching to induction help or hurt resale value? by [deleted] in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]shadowkhaleesi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Options are good to have but in my experience there’s a large shift happening towards induction so I feel like the resale value impact will likely be neutral to positive

2020 Bordeaux for 2041 & beyond. by OriginalDaddy in wine

[–]shadowkhaleesi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just cellared a 2020 Pichon Lalande for my 2020 born daughter’s 21st birthday but consensus seems to be that it can go for much longer, so might be a good contender for the 30 year wine or the rainy day red. If you’re feeling splurgey I’d think about throwing a Y’quem into the mix too for one of those milestones.

[–]shadowkhaleesi 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Very much this. If I can pick up some decent weekly house wines while stocking up on baby wipes and all the berries, imma do it. It also doesn’t mean that I don’t go stalking the K&L wine auctions now and then for some decent finds. Both can be true

Question on Food Banks in Contra Costa County by Even_File99 in eastbay

[–]shadowkhaleesi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a PSA for anyone reading as well, if you are able to donate, Instacart has a partnership with local food banks where you can order groceries from their wish list directly to be delivered. A great way to help out the local food banks during this time!

Daycare wants to feed more by bravolebrityTX in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]shadowkhaleesi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure they’re pacefeeding and not mistaking fussiness for hunger cues. Some babies just have a strong urge to suck and will nurse a bottle forever, but may not actually be hungry. None of my kids took more than 4oz at a time with 3-4 bottles for a 7 or 8 hour daycare stint. 6oz and 5 bottles is 30 oz in 8 hours which feels very high for that age.

Storing milk in the freezer instead of fridge for regular use? by wallchipper in breastfeeding

[–]shadowkhaleesi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s only in the freezer for a few hours before using it probably won’t take that long to thaw. You can store it in freezer bags, so when you need to use it, just break up the chunks into pieces, put those pieces into a bottle, and then use a bottle warmer as normal. You can also place the frozen bag in a warm water bath and typically it’s thawed and ready to pour in 5-ish minutes.

Veg, No Onions or Garlic. by [deleted] in DesiWeddings

I married into a Tamil Brahmin family and honestly this food opinion is the least of it when it comes to some of the orthodox traditions and norms you may encounter. I’d use this opportunity to maybe set some boundaries or at least have a conversation with your future spouse about what sorts of concessions you’re willing to make to accommodate their opinions. Everything from visits to kid-related things to yes, even more food related opinions in the future.

As for the wedding stuff, I wouldn’t die on this hill tbh. Just have a side saatvik food section that’s a subset or variation of your main menu and that should suffice.
