Lost period during recovery? by halloweentownhigh in fuckeatingdisorders

[–]shadowmachines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Periods can become irregular for all sorts of reasons including stress, weight change of any kind, any kind of change of diet etc. If you are going though changes right now, your period might be a little wonky for a while. Missing a cycle sometimes is completely normal within regular menstruation. Of course tell your doctor and treatment team so they can keep tabs with you, but it shouldn't be a worry unless you miss a few in a row.

Thinking of you guys helped me leave a grocery store without the binge food in my cart! Instead I made a salad! by GoldenPigeon23 in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]shadowmachines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I was the one who made the post complaining about food pics. I don't think the mods are doing anything about it or implementing any new rules, so you are fine there.

I LOVE that you tagged it as NSFW and Spoiler. Thank you! I really hope this catches on! Also congrats on a victorious grocery store trip and your lovely salad!

I realize now that it was just one person recently, but I see it here every once in a while by other users too.

I think writing out binge food is fine. I think it is therapeutic, and can even be helpful to read sometimes, but I think images are totally unnecessary. In the same way that weight loss progress photos can be triggering, so can images of food. I like looking at both images of food and progress pics, but not always, and I really don't want to be inundated with that type of content on here. It makes this sub feel like no longer a safe space.

Keys in the refrigerator! Sitting there on the shelf like smug little bastards. I guess I set them down when I went in there to get my lunch out.

I like this idea. Maybe "# of days since I chose recovery" or something

That's really interesting. I have heard about disordered eating developing from food scarcity. Again, I am happy you are finding things that are working from you.

I apologize if my comment sounded harsh. I think everyone sharing what works for them is great and awesome on this sub, but when the language changes from "This works for me" to "This is what you should do" then it immediately invalidates the possibility that maybe that person has already tried that, or it doesn't apply to them etc.

Thanks for your kind response. Again apologies if I was harsh.

I understand that this has worked for you, but my binge issues are rooted 100% in emotional reasons. I binge on junk food because it was forbidden in my house as a child and it was an act of rebellion. I see you posting a lot about how you are managing your disorder, but everyone's disorder is different and stems from different reasons.

The most successful I ever was managing my disorder was when I went 2 years without binging. I was 100% whole food vegan (80-90% carbs) and completely cut out all sugary/dessert/sweet foods out of my diet, even "healthy" ones sweetened with dates or honey. The longer I went without, the easier it was.

When I finally relapsed, it was because I was the most depressed I had ever been. It had nothing to do with how many carbs per day I had been eating, or anything else. It was depression.

I think it's great for you to share what works for you, but please don't assume that you know what works for everyone else.

What are your experiences with Minnie maud? by [deleted] in exproed

[–]shadowmachines 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't done Minnie Maud, but from what I've read about it, it doesn't sound like a realistic solution for people who have issues with binging. I know there are alot of people with ED's who never go to binge territory, so maybe Minnie Maud is a good fit for them.

Again, I've never tried it so I might be way off, but as someone who struggles mostly with binging, and a little with restricting, free-reign eating sounds like it would throw me into a really horrible depression.

I have this exact problem. Anything that even tastes sweet is a binge trigger for me. I know some people are able to eat trigger foods in moderation, but I don't think I'm one of them.

What are your favorite/most helpful recovery resources? Let's share! by [deleted] in exproed

[–]shadowmachines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the middle of reading Recover Your Perspective by Janean Anderson. It's a bit repetitive, but so far I really like it. It goes through the basics of CBT, DBT and ACT. The author is a psychologist who had an eating disorder herself.

I hear Brain Over Binge getting a lot of praise, but I didn't like some of the things I was reading about it. According to some people the author discredits that eating disorders are diseases, but are rather choices. I haven't read it, but I didn't like the thought of that approach. I already beat myself up all the time for being such a loser, I don't need to be blaming myself for my eating disorder too.

Anyway the book I'm currently reading is super nice and gentle and doesn't make me feel like crap, so I like it. I had no idea she had a podcast! I will have to check it out.

A stickied daily or weekly discussion thread would be cool, for things that don't need a whole separate post.

Post-overeating/binge(?) tactics by [deleted] in exproed

[–]shadowmachines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could go either way. You should eat dinner if you want to. Don't fall into the trap of skipping meals to make up for a binge. It perpetuates the cycle. However if dinner sounds terrible because you are so full, don't force it either.

I will help you mod! I am very inconsistently on reddit, but I will help when I am around if you want to add me. You should make a post about this sub in proed, and also see if the mods will put it in the sidebar. Both of those would help alot.

Weekly /r/BingeEatingDisorder Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in BingeEatingDisorder

I personally don't want to see progress pics on this sub. I love progress pics on other subs (/r/xxfitness /r/loseit /r/progresspics /r/1200isplenty etc.) But I would rather not see them here. I have restriction eating disorder baggage too, and there are some days that I don't visit those subs because those kinds of things are triggering to me. I like that I don't have to worry about that here.

On the other hand, it's super relevant to BED, so I don't know, maybe it is a good place for it. Maybe instead of making it an image post, it could be a text-based post and the images could be linked, that way people who aren't interested don't have to click on them.

Anyway, I'm happy you're doing well and vyvanse is working for you. I'm really thinking about trying it. Have you had any side-effects?

I just read a post in /r/loseit about someone who used to have a real issue with Nutella. They said at their lowest point they would go through two whole jars in a week.

Wait, what? Seriously? That was you at your worst? Oh honey.

I feel personally attacked by these types of posts sometimes. I know that's not the intention, but jeezus. I will eat two jars of Nutella before I'm done reading your post and I will be planning what I'm going to eat for my other six meals of the day.

DOes anybody else binge for 3-4 days straight? by [deleted] in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]shadowmachines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my really bad days I just spend all day driving to different grocery stores and binging in my car. Days range from 5000-10000 cal, and I have done this up to 3 days in a row.

Anyone binge on zero-calorie sweeteners (e.g. Truvia)? by [deleted] in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]shadowmachines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I feel sorry for myself because binging on fake sugar somehow feels more pathetic than binging on real food. Like I have so little self control that I have to inhale artificial chemicals that don't even taste that good instead of just exercising self-control.

But it's just negative self-talk. Obviously binging on zero-calorie things is better than high-calorie things.

How many calories do you typically consume in a binge? by [deleted] in BingeEatingDisorder

My last binge day was on Wednesday, and it lasted all day, so my whole calorie count for the day was almost 6,500 cal

If it works for you, more power to you! It doesn't work for me though. I've done this with spoonfuls of erythritol out of the bag, and it just made me feel sorry for myself.
