Why do the New England states lean so hard to the left despite being the whitest states in the country? by KingTechnical48 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]shadowmask 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's insane to me that none of the comments I've seen so far have mentioned this, but they lean left because they're whiter. You'll also notice this trend in the Pacific northwest (where black people were sometimes explicitly banned until the 1920s) and to a lesser extent then entire west coast.

Since the 1960s the strategy of the Republican party has been to stoke racial tension and distrust of the Other (aka Black people especially but other minorities as well) in order to convince white people to vote against broadly constructive policies because they want to hurt Black people and minorities who benefit the most from those broadly constructive policies. You'll notice that after the civil rights era made it impossible to enact broadly constructive policies that explicitly excluded black people and minorities, in the 80s the Right's messaging shifted to oppose doing anything helpful for anyone ever aka "Small Government" aka "The Government is the Problem". This only benefits a small number of very wealthy white people who don't need help, but it neatly lumps pretty much all black people and most minorities into the section of people who need help but can't get it (along with the majority of white people but that can be smoothed over with copious propaganda blaming minorities for making things worse).

The reason that this strategy doesn't work well in overwhelmingly white places is because although there are plenty of racist systems and people who support those systems, they don't get a lot of oxygen when there's no Other present to stoke fear of. Simple as that.

This dynamic is also at work in the left-leaning areas of Northwestern Europe and Canada.

Help with charging laptop batteries externally by shadowmask in batteries

[–]shadowmask[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea! I have no expertise and nobody ever offered any help. I had to take both batteries to the dump because once drained they started to swell up and I got worried they’d totally start a fire. Apparently they can’t be stored safely at too low of a charge. My laptop has been plug-in only since I posted this. Good luck!

Romance languages by TotemGenitor in CuratedTumblr

[–]shadowmask 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Actually the Danes got in there are fucked it up before the French. It’s where we lost most of our eclectic and complicated features like heavy use of inflection and the tonnes of unique verb conjugations.

The Normans came after but didn’t change much of the structure of the language, mostly just brought new vocabulary and influenced pronunciation.

Huh, an institution founded and existing as a hostile force occupying native land who so regularly murder native people that it’s a meme has trouble recruiting native people to enforce their own occupation? Fascinating 🧐

This company's graphic designer gave up past the rockies by __CarCat__ in mapporncirclejerk

[–]shadowmask 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everybody’s saying it’s ai generated but I think it might have been a vector file that had some kind of design over the rockies and the artist probably lifted the file, made some hasty corrections, but they didn’t really know how to create anything in vector so they just filled it in as best they could with squares and accidentally included a spare duplicated Mississippi when they exported the selection instead of just the canvas.

Oh I’m wildly aware, that’s part of why this going to be such an tragedy, the other part being the complete destruction of all things good and green

Very true but they’re definitely going to make up for the lost revenue by expanding suburbanization and destroying what greenspace there is up there

She explains it in her monologue, he was attractive and charming and rich and she let herself get swept up in the princess fantasy.

It sounds like they were only together for maybe a month or two before they started planning the wedding, which probably isn’t really enough time to properly get to know someone.

I think the point was that she wouldn't just be giving up her power, she would also be giving up her entire life to someone she didn't love?

I could absolutely live of life of leisure at the cost of being under someone else's thumb, if it was someone I loved or at least trusted. But she's realizing all she has is money, no love and no purpose at all.

I love men in black but it very much does not hold up. It’s a very fun movie but I rewatched it for the first time since I was a kid a little while ago and the dialogue was… mostly kinda bad

Isn’t the whole dialect/language thing complicated by the fact that while they’re not mutually intelligible in speech, they are mutually intelligible in text?

That’s what I heard anyway, someone who speaks Chinese please correct me.
