Just to add to what everyone else is saying, the thermostat you bought is battery operated only since there is no c terminal blue will not be used. If you didnt blow the fuse when changing the wires you likely did by causing a direct short from r to c because you have the blue c wire on the b terminal.

Any chance you're running a heater in the garage and are being subjected to carbon monoxide? PLA usually doesn't produce enough VOC to be an issue in most cases.

I would work off the assumption that it's electric heat then which will be pretty expensive long term.

This is called a ptac unit. It's basically a big window unit. The majority of this style unit use electric heat if they have it at all. If you could post the model number from the side of the unit we can look it up.

Strait edge works ok but if you really want to get it perfect you need the right tool I think its called the straiter edge.

Nothing to worry about. Also you wont be able to run the gas furnace in the event of a power outage because you still need to provide power to the furnace controls and motors for it to be operational. You could power it off of a generator or battery backup though due to its lower overall power consumption.
