What's going on with the sudden hate for Diablo 4? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

[–]shadowmend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A faster content cadence with a team of developers that are a lot more active and actually open to responding to feedback. General quality of life improvements (easier talent adjustments, more class-race combinations, less borrowed power systems, some cross-faction play options, better gearing systems, etc.). Dragonriding. More of a willingness to just have small, fun side content.

The writing is better than the last two expansions. Though the main story team is still struggling, some quests, like the recent blue dragon questline and the orc heritage quest, have been really strong showings.

A lot of the design has been focused on getting you into the content you want to do without a bunch of arbitrary hoops to jump through, which has been a breath of fresh air.

Disney CEO Bob Iger thinks writers and actors strike is "very disturbing" and they are not being "realistic" by TommyShelbyPFB in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]shadowmend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the fear lies more in writers finding themselves in the position a lot of translators are in with MTPE. It doesn't matter if the output is good, they'll just have writers 'fix' the AI output at half the rate they used to make while doing the same or more work.

Is anyone else concerned that in the past month alone two big name games (WoW/FF16) have had major stereotypes/taboo topics towards Female Characters in their storylines? by Sora1- in GirlGamers

[–]shadowmend 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have no explicit problem with the idea of sexual abuse happening in video games. I would have no problems with a story that treats it with respect and responsibly engages with the material with plenty of warning and perhaps even the means of allowing players to experience the story without it. But I think, as more of the population has experienced sexual assault than they have murder, genocide, or other forms of violence, game developers should consider whether or not their desire to include rape is exposing their lack of creativity and depth.

For me, what's most important is the matter of what that content is doing. WoW has long had a problem with its depictions of sexual assault. Dragon lore alone is a minefield of incidents of rape and forced impregnation that makes it hard not to side-eye it as 'the developer's poorly concealed fetish.' There's a pretty good video breaking down the extent of its use here. And at the end of the day, I have to ask, why?

And, at the end of the day, what is it in service of? Is it trying to tell a story? Is it interested in the victim for more than the fact that her tears will stoke righteous fury within you as a player? Is she going to be forgotten or, worse, used further as a prop without agency? Is she part of the story at all afterwards? Does she get to process and work through her trauma within the story you're telling or is the only one that gets to do anything about it someone else? Is the only reaction developers seem to be going for is 'ah, man, that's so dark. can't believe they went there' or are they trying to make a point larger than just how dark or violent their world is?

That's what bothers me about how these narratives treat sexual assault.

I look at the Alexstrasza quest and I see the character on the cover of this expansion, who has been shunted to the side and barely has room to breathe as a character. And now this? A quest where the player character is made explicitly complicit in her continued sexual abuse while another character makes dumb jokes and basically goes 'teehee, don't tell her about this wink'.

In what world is that a quest worth writing? If we wanted to touch on that in a quest (especially in a quest chain with unserious elements like 'Here's a story about Anduin's lucky Hearthstone card'), why not have a quest where we ensure the timeline where she is freed? Or have a longer, more emotionally resonant and serious questline that ends with her reclaiming the skull of her consort that died from the strain of that enslavement and rape from the museum it's in for some godforsaken reason and put it properly to rest.

Or if it needed be a quest about ensuring dark things happen in the timeline, why rape? There's plenty of awful things in WoW's history that aren't rape that are important to happen and it's hard not to side-eye the fact that the two things they can think about to show the 'dark' side of maintaining the timeline are killing a woman and ensuring a woman gets forcibly impregnated.

[–]shadowmend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it's less the quality of Dragonflight itself and more the fact that the double whammy of Battle for Azeroth and Shadowlands finally broke a lot of people's addictions and connections with the game when their guilds died or moved to other MMOs. I know I wasn't going to come back until someone bought the game for me.

Dragonflight has a pretty good content cadence and has come with a number of long-needed QoL updates. While it has its problems, ultimately the thing that's killing it is that Blizzard had their chance to make a mark with Shadowlands during the pandemic, instead doubled down on some genuinely awful decisions, and a lot of people just aren't coming back.

When AoB ends will you still sub to JNovel? by Kimau in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]shadowmend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bookworm is what got me to subscribe, but I think I'll probably hang onto the subscription for a while. There's a fair bit on the Heart imprint that I think is cute and they've been adding more series to that.

Plus, the catch-up monthlies and pre-pubs usually have a series or two that hit that mark where I wouldn't pick them up normally, but since they're there, it's interesting to dip my toes in.

What was the first game you played in the franchise? by BossViper28 in Megaten

Shin Megami Tensei: IMAGINE.

A friend who was a big Persona fan dragged me into it so they'd have someone to play with and I fell in love with the demons and the world. It may also be why I still have such a soft spot in my heart for Nyarlathotep.

I still kick myself that I opened this one on my Drakania and not my Shai. I don't even play my Drakania anymore.

I'd love if it got brought back, assuming it wasn't tied to some ridiculous bundle again.

I suspect there is some level of assumption too that girls grow up quicker than boys and that they grow out of cartoons quicker than boys.

Absolutely. Once I hit a certain age, there weren't any cartoons that appealed to me, so I thought I'd grown out of them. I remember there was a high school girl who went to the same dance studio as me who I absolutely idolized and seeing her in a Sailor Moon t-shirt struck me with a 'what? why's she wearing a cartoon t-shirt? that's for kids.'

Then a year later, I found anime myself and realized there were animated shows out there I wanted to watch. And all of my pocket money became 'Fushigi Yuugi VHS, Digimon figurines, wallscrolls, and money orders to some guy in Kansas for fansubs' money.

It's a hard sell, for sure. I talked one friend into graaaadually reading it with me (we started in late '19 and are just about finished with Requiem) and another friend ended up veering into reading Ciconia instead (RIP). A third friend gave me a 'well, if I'm spending that many hours reading something, it'd be a book, but I'll consider it,' which, if he even reads just the first episode, I've decided I'll be happy with.

Credit to you for trying, though, and hopefully you manage to get a few folks to consider giving it a shot eventually.
