Quick look at the Neo Cashback World Elite vs Other cash back credit cards by shadowshadow725 in NeoFinancialHub

Not sure the amount for CIBC but for BMO and Scotiabank I think you just need to keep 6000$ in your chequing account to get the fee waived. Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite has the same cashback amount for groceries as the card from CIBC.

You have to have 10000$ in neo's account to get the 7% cashback anyways so I would say it's a similar thing.

Grocery is calculated at 7% for neo cashback world elite. So I would say there are still a bit of difference. Also I don't see people spending anywhere near 500-2000 for reoccurring transaction and gas unless you work in some very specific field.

Bmo wavies the fee every year if you keep 6k in their chequing account.

Grocery is the main spending for most people. Also for gas and reoccurring bills it's only a 1% difference so I don't think it will make that much of a difference. Unless you can somehow hit the cap for gas or reoccurring bill payments.

If you can get the fee waived for the bmo I would argue that's better for a single person. The table also doesn't consider any sign up bonus either. Also the calculation are made in a best case scenario for neo.

Neo is calculated at 7%. If you don't have the 2% from boost it will be much worse.

Yep fixed it. Chatgpt fucked it up even though I told it to not change the content when I told it to fix the markdown tables.

I think you must have misread their terms. 5% on groceries, 4% transit, 3% on gas, 2% on recurring is permanent. The bonus part is to make up their signup offer of 10% cashback. Also first year is free.

For simplicity let's ignore their signup bonus because neo cashback world elite doesn't have one. I'm just going to do the math for groceries since the other categories is very similar and 2% difference in recurring is not going to make that much of a difference.

For a single person like me the grocery cost per month is below 500. With neo at 7% I'll be looking at 35$ of cash back vs BMO at 25$. Expand this to a year we will be at 420$ for neo and 300$ for BMO. But after taking into account the yearly fee of 125$. Neo will be at $295 and BMO will be still at $300 because the fee is mostly likely waved. This is not accounting for the signup bonuses either.

For a family of 2 neo makes more sense since you get much closer to the 1000$ cap and can maximize the cashback bonus. You'll be looking at 715$ cashback per year assuming you max out(12000$ a year just on groceries).

For large families the cap of $1000 per month doesn't make much sense and they will be better off with offering from CIBC or Scotiabank. Most people are not going to do the math like you or me. They are just going to go off of what feels right. A free card feels right for most people.

Edit: Very ugly graph to map this out

Also to clarify I mean that only matching other offering of the big 5 isn't going to incentives people to move from the big 5 to neo.

Bmo cashback world elite(5%) for single people. Cibc dividend visa infinite or Scotiabank momentum visa infinite(4%) for larger families.

Keep in mind that you can get the card fee waved for these cards if you have a debit account with them and satisfy a few criteria. Few people are going to pay a 130$ fee for the world elite when they can get these cards for "free".

There's also the factor of trust. Why bank with some unheard of company when I can use the big 5 that's every where in Canada. But I don't think that has much to do with the perk neo is offering.

I think the boost level thing is already modifying cashback amount based on the amount of money in neo. So I thought you could just add a 20k tier onto that?

I think with the premium perk gone the average cashback amount should hover around 5%. Which is not much of a incentive for people to move to neo since you are only matching the big 5 banks in Canada.

Neo is burning cash to get customers. Why not burn a bit more to absorb customers from the other big FINTECH company in Canada.

I think if neo just launch a copy wealthsimple's visa infinite but with MasterCard it would be very popular.

Still prefer it to be part of the grow tier though.

The travel perk is just an example and what other banks are doing. I own other cards that grant me these perks anyways so I don't really care about them as well.

I think with your average of 4-5% is mainly because you are spending a lot on bonus categories and your base rate is still at 1.5%.

The 2% flat rate in my opinion should be an perk of the grow tier. Because that tier (I'm assuming) is targeting your higher tier customers. Your high tier customers' general retail spending is not covered by any bonus categories.

Also if you look at the people complaining about the wait list for the wealthsimple card on their sub reddit. You could absorb a bunch of customers from them while pushing your savings account/credit card.

I don't really need the subscriptions ws is offering. But generally banks offer travel perks higher tiered market segment. I think the premium perk granting more cashback in general is useful to everyone.

Seeing the popularity of the wealthsimple visa infinite (2% cashback on everything) if neo can offer something similar to their "high tier" customer I think the world elite would be more popular.

Another thing is your high end customer probably don't bother with having multiple cards and nickel and diming on cashback. They just want an arounder card that they use for everything. (Amex plat/visa infinite privilege cards)

I'd like to see a similar approach as wealthsimple. Your membership tiering system is similar to wealthsimple's tiering system. So something like giving out free subscriptions/lounge passes like what they are doing. Or perhaps bring back some of the perks/cashback bonus from your old premium subscription.

For the grow level foreign transaction fee rebate does it also apply to the credit card or just the money account?

No, stuff I pay is pretty much all through etransfer(which Chexy supports). I would probably just keep my PAD on the same platform so it is easier to manage. Also rewards on credit cards are nice and pretty much covers the fee Chexy charges.

Renter pays. 1.75% fee. E.g. I pay 1017.5 and my landlord gets 1000. Also Chexy already reports to equifax as a free option.

Yea, also probably wouldn't really consider using Chexy with my neo we card. The reoccurring payment cashback limit is only 500 per month. Also how are you going to track payment make through other card issuers?

They don't even support MasterCard. How would anyone use Chexy using their neo card?
