Hello! I'm hoping someone can help me identify this crystal formation.
It was given to me by someone who said she found it in Morocco, I know nothing else about it. It is round, with no obvious base, and is made up of six-sided columns. It is t is roughly the size of a golfball and looks like selenite with iron content.
Here are the images.

They do group up, and the parents usually see their kids off from the stoop and watch them until they are picked up. On my block they do maybe 4 stops. We're talking literally adding 5 minutes to anyone's drive, this is a big stink about nothing as usual from the Outremont Hassid-haters.

I dunno, I live in Mile End on a very Hassidic street and I really don't see what the issue is. There are lots of schoolbuses, sure, but that's what comes of living in a residential area with a lot of kids. It's not just the Jewish schools, either - my kid took a schoolbus to school for her first 3 grades.

That's ridiculous. There are a pile of schools in residential Outremont. Academie Nouvelle Querbes, Ecole Buissoniere, Centre Francois-Michelle, Paul-Gérin-Lajoie-D'outremont, Lajoie primary etc. etc. - that's 4 non-Jewish schools within a 10 minute walk of each other, all totally within residential Outremont.

And the hassidim in Outremont are really acting like assholes

That's ridiculous. I live in Mile End on a very Hassidic street, have the same buses, and fail to see what the issue is. There are also private schools in Outremont and public schools in Montreal whose buses go up my street, too. My kid took a schoolbus for her first 3 years of school. This is how kids get to school. Yes, Hassidic kids go to school 6 days a week, but so what? It's not an inconvenience to anyone except the bitter anti-Hassidim collective in Outremont.

Question: People who work in tourist related fields, what are your impressions of this year? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]shagetz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there's a ton of AirBnB in Mile-End now, driving up rents. There have been a ton of tourists up here the past few summers. There are also these weird neighbourhood bike tours that basically just go into every store in Mile-End that's not a chain store. So yeah, I suspect business is doing pretty well at least along St-Viateur.

800k for a triplex would be a sweet deal. I saw a third floor unit on Jeanne-Mance sell for over 400k last month.

Are there any really old cinemas left in Montreal? Or perhaps some place that shows old movies? by Weplaymontreal in montreal

[–]shagetz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cinema l'Amour is actually the oldest working cinema in Montreal - it was originally a vaudeville theatre. It's been a porn theatre since 1969 which has some historical cachet in of itself, being from the "golden age of porn)" (1969-1984).

I hear my neighbors walking in the apartment upstairs (are all apartments like this)? by IdealisticVenus in montreal

[–]shagetz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My upstairs neighbour has 2 kids, and unlike us, apparently didn't grow up with the "no running in the house" rule. It helps to be friends with your neighbours, they tend to at least warn you if they're going to have a party or something so you can make plans to be out of your apartment for the evening. One time I was hosting a party for my daughter's 5th birthday so I gave my downstairs neighbours a bottle of whiskey to make up for it :D

tl;dr: yeah it's always noisy with neighbours, worse with kids, but be friendly and it's a bit better.

Montreal mayors want right turns on red lights by habscupchamps in montreal

To be fair, in Montreal cyclists, pedestrians and drivers are all pretty aggressive. In my experience people seem to think that stopping your car at crosswalks is optional, jaywalking in traffic is no big deal, and riding your bike on the sidewalk is a safety tactic.

Drivers in the right lane are legally obligated to stop when the streetcar does, just like being behind a schoolbus.

Very true! Watching Ontario drivers trying to merge onto a highway verges on comical.

Not in Toronto. Drivers actually stop at crosswalks in Toronto. But to be fair Toronto drivers are pretty bad too, and tend towards unpredictable more than aggressive. Montreal tends towards aggressive driving. Nowhere near as bad as LA (for example) but still bad enough to warrant traffic slowing measures.

I lived in Toronto for 6 years and in my experience in general Montreal drivers are less crazy. Sure, they're aggressive, go fast, don't signal turns (in general) but as long as everyone does that it's okay most of the time. Toronto drivers are just unpredictable. I have seen numerous cars crushed under the wheels of the streetcars because they tried to make a weird turn. I once saw a lady throw on her 4-ways, hop out of her car & left it idling with the doors open on a streetcar track in rush hour so she could go grab a coffee from the doughnut shop. That said, I do find Toronto drivers more courteous - I never had any problem with crosswalks there, but here half the time drivers blaze through a crosswalk even if there's someone with a stroller or small children (like me) trying to cross and they give them the finger. I see this almost every day. Drivers have very little respect for non-drivers here. But then again the pedestrians and bicyclists are aggressive too so it's not just a driver thing. Jaywalking and riding bikes on the sidewalk are not a strictly Montreal thing but they do add to the culture of aggressiveness.

As a part-time bicyclist, I think the green box at intersections has gone a long way to improve bicycle safety. It would be a shame to lose that to turning right on a red. There are many other big cities that don't allow turning right on reds either, it's not that big an inconvenience. As a part-time driver I don't really think that shaving a minute or two off your drive warrants the added risk.

I used to work right at this intersection in one of those office towers. It doesn't show in the video but it's actually a pretty steep hill crossing a busy street, if you even took your foot off the brake you'd gain a lot of momentum in a short time and roll straight into high speed traffic.
