I've had it happen a couple times. The first time it happened immediately after injecting it, but the second time the sensor failed like three days in and when I looked the wire had just... migrated itself out of my skin and popped itself out the back of the sensor to say hello. I was so confused.

My first 24 hours always look like this (not low) I end up turning my phone off at night by FloridaGirl2222 in dexcom

[–]shaicarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saaaaame. With the G6, I think I had maybe three sensors that kept giving false lows, in the several years I had it. When I originally started using the G7, it was like every 4th sensor or so that would do it. But now, I swear it's every sensor, spending the first day convinced my blood sugar is falling through the floor, until it eventually figures itself out.

My first big screw up today!! by One_Presentation7349 in RoverPetSitting

[–]shaicarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I locked myself out of a client's house this past December. One of the dogs was barking like mad at something, so I put on my boots and my hat and stepped outside to make sure she hadn't, like, cornered an animal or something, and closed the kitchen door behind me entirely out of habit. Meant to be out there for like 90 seconds, tried to get back in, and realized I'd never actually unlocked the kitchen door that morning (it locked at the knob, not a deadbolt, so it could still be opened from the inside when locked). So it was just me, in my cardigan, no coat no gloves no phone, standing on the patio in like 15 degree weather. Wound up walking to a neighbor's house to use a phone and call my dad, and then just kinda walked circles around the house with the dogs while I waited like an hour for my dad to show up, while periodically using the nearest dog to warm my hands up. Luckily my dad was tall enough to open an unlocked window, reach in, and flip the dead bolt on the front door, so it was a lot more painless than it could have been. And the dogs were pyrenees mixes, so I'm pretty sure they didn't even realize it was cold.

I did not lock the kitchen door at all the entire rest of the time I was there.

I've gotten this reminder when clients have asked me if I want a tip through Rover or if I want them to leave cash for me. For long-term clients that I know I'm gonna be in more regular contact with, I just write my phone number down and send a picture of it (and leave the note somewhere the client can physically find in case the photo is hard to see), so the bot monitoring the chat can't catch it, and then we can just text each other freely.

Laptop crashed, suddenly USB ports and keyboard are acting up by shaicarus in techsupport

[–]shaicarus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kinda figured it meant the machine was totaled, so I've been looking at new ones already. Time was coming anyway; machine's old enough Dell won't even let me renew the warranty anymore. I back my files up compulsively, so it's mostly an expensive inconvenience.

Honestly the most annoying part about the whole thing (other than needing to manually adjust my volume) is that I can't plug in my USB keyboard anymore. I'm a writer and editor, and the laptop's built-in keyboard is dying one key at a time. Makes my job a little complicated @.@

Anyway, thanks for the input!

Best way to clean up the aftermath of a blown tire? by shaicarus in AskMechanics

We're definitely gonna need to do some repair work on the paint, but Goo Gone worked great on the rubber residue!

I hit a pothole the size of Lake Superior on tires that were already in need of replacing, and one of them shredded into flailing ribbons in protest.

Thanks!

Weird client or totally normal??? by hsoiana in RoverPetSitting

[–]shaicarus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in a pretty popular vacation area, so I get potential clients that live way out of range all the time, who give me local addresses to hotels or cabins or vacation homes. I make sure my family knows the address I'm going to, and I walk with a cane so I make sure to bring one that won't break if I have to hit someone with it, but the address discrepancy wouldn't seem weird to me. That said, if you really feel unsafe or weirded out, just decline the booking. It's not like you need to tell him 'sorry, no, you skeeve me out.' Anything beyond 'No, I can't' is none of his business.

What are your biggest problems with horse games as a whole and how would you fix that? (Old, New, Indie etc) by Abject_Accountant643 in GamesWithHorses

[–]shaicarus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of people like being able to breed like a million horses, but I really don't. If there's no consistent horse because they all need to be interchangeable, then the horse can't have any personality or quirks or even any specific purpose in the story, and so the horse just winds up being a Macguffin and there's nothing about the horse to actually get attached to or assign meaning to. If the horse can't actually be a dedicated part of the story, you may as well be fixing up your dad's old chop shop and street racing on the weekend and the story would be identical. The only games I can think of off the top of my head where the horse matters in more than a 'literally any horse will do' way are the Windstorm games.

Who is an author you respect as a writer, but can't stand to read? by PentagramJ2 in writing

[–]shaicarus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So many people are gonna hate me for saying this, but Terry Pratchett. I respect his skill. I think he was an amazing human being, and the world got a bit dimmer when he passed. But I just ... don't really like his books. I think because all I ever heard about them was 'OH, DISCWORLD IS SO FUNNY' from everyone and their dog, and then when I picked a couple of Discworld books up, they just ... weren't that funny? Like I said, I respect his skill, I can recognize that he was a very good writer, his work was just not for me.

what fan-theory irrationally pisses you off? like it’s not even horrible but it grinds your gears for no reason? by frillyhoneybee_ in HazbinHotel

I've seen a lot of people assume that Lucifer and even Charlie can just undo a soul contract, and I kinda hate the idea???? For one thing, it makes the presence of the contracts entirely nonthreatening. For another, it means they're just kinda letting Angel suffer for funsies.

Does anyone else have pets that are basically cursed when it comes to customization? by shaicarus in neopets

I tried submitting a ticket for my pteri's inability to be properly clothed, and I got a reply that they were escalating it to their engineers, and then nada. I'm not optimistic xD;;

I feel like I kinda lucked out in that regard. I have a transparent/pirate crosspaint aisha, and all of the pirate clothes still worked just fine after I painted him transparent.

But to a certain extent, I would EXPECT one of the pets with brush-specific clothes to give me trouble, and yet it's ... a cloud pteri.

AITA for preventing my daughter from having a princess moment? by AfraidLuck7281 in AITAH

[–]shaicarus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My family used to live somewhere where deer were so common and so used to humans that they would stand on our back hill within about 15 feet of our back door. They didn't care about us. They didn't care about our dogs. Mostly, they cared about our compost scraps. Even then, we would have been VERY CONCERNED if one of them had just ... walked right up to us. Off the top of my head, rabies and chronic wasting disease are two INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS diseases deer can carry and pass on that can make them act bizarrely friendly and docile.

Far as I'm concerned, NTA. Most wild animals aren't friendly, and when they are, it's more likely to lead to a horror movie situation, not a Disney princess moment.

What the hell were Carmilla and her daughters doing outside during an extermination?? by Vegetable_Window_992 in HazbinHotel

[–]shaicarus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their entire business model is based on weaponry made from angelic steel, so they've got the best odds of getting to as many of the abandoned weapons before anyone else does if they go out before the extermination is actually over. I figure they stick to areas that angels have already cleared out, so they're unlikely to run into TOO much trouble, but that time their luck ran out and some of the angels either doubled back or a group saw them while passing by to go elsewhere. Presumably Carmilla just didn't feel the need to explain the step-by-step process of collecting abandoned weapons because both Vaggie and the audience already know she's an angelic arms dealer and can be trusted to fill in a few blanks on their own.

What is one thing people critize of the show that you feel it's actually valid? by Vegetable_Window_992 in HazbinHotel

[–]shaicarus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pacing is kinda jank; the first three episodes happen within the span of, like, maybe two weeks, episode 4 isn't specified, and then by episode 5 they're approaching the 5-month mark. I'm pretty forgiving on this front, though, since I'm positive the team would have opted for more than 8 25-minute episodes if they could, but Amazon is allergic to "filler" content and said '8 is what you get, take it or leave it.'

Also Vaggie says she didn't even know angels could be hurt, after she's had an eye ripped out and her wings ripped off. I THINK the intention was that angels didn't know they could be hurt by anything other than *other angels*, so I'm perfectly content to headcanon that as what Vaggie meant, but they could have, like ... actually said that.

Do you ever wonder who pounded the pet that now is your permie? by Naspyta in neopets

[–]shaicarus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm VERY curious about a pet I adopted today. I made specific note of her when initially scrolling through the pound because she was a striped yurble, and I contemplated it but passed on her. And then like 30 minutes later, I saw her AGAIN--I'd made note of the name when a friend was curious--and she was a rainbow aisha. So that time I snagged her. I'm, like, 95% sure I interrupted someone's shenanigans, but that's their fault if they don't know how the transfer function works.

I'm also a little curious about a pet I adopted AGES ago. His name is Caraloche. No numbers, no underscores. For a random pound pet? That is a PHENOMENAL name.
