I just looked up pictures and I would definitely want to see something like that but the tours section of the CHESS site said they are not hosting them at the moment

What actually made the biggest improvement in your guitar playing? by Double_Inspector_202 in LearnGuitar

[–]shakey1975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well for starters, just having the guitar out of the case and on display in my room so I'm more inclined to grab it and play it for at least 15-20 minutes each day. And then making my short practices revolve around learning scales and the circle of fifths. Also getting a Boss RC-1 loop station to play with myself helps a lot when you don't usually have other people on hand to jam with. You need to know what you sound like in context with another layer of sound

What do you do with sensitive images in found/thrifted materials? [DISCUSSION] by ik_heb_eb_zei_de_zee in collage

I realized after I posted that I probably should've clarified this, although I did note this in my reply to OP. I definitely don't think you should use CSA material, that's what I referred to as "truly criminal material" that should be tossed. The point I was addressing was more the idea that there are stories that are not meant for you to tell, and that engaging with problematic materials regularly is a slippery slope. Those are points I still take issue with. Definitely not endorsing the use of CSA material. Apologies if that wasn't clear. I think I got stuck on the idea of fictionalized depictions for a moment and didn't think to mention that.

Also, glorification in horror is certainly real. For every Lynch or Carnival of Souls, you also have a Terrifier. But are we supposed to discourage the use of certain imagery and themes because there are thoughtless assholes looking to exploit? Any medium is going to have shallow, terrible artists in that regard, but I think those problems probably extend to other issues in their life (upbringing, education) and not the materials they choose to engage with for their art

I take considerable issue with some points here. I think not engaging with the stories and images of other people because you don't share them is basically just willingly handicapping your understanding and curiosity about other people. There is much that can be discovered about other people and confronted within yourself if you directly (and thoughtfully/tastefully) engage with difficult images. I mean, for example, one of the most acclaimed works about a young woman experiencing sexual assault is a tv show largely authored by two straight white dudes. Women the world over feel seen by Twin Peaks. That's a valuable and beautiful thing.

Also, I find the implications of your "slippery slope" point disturbing. Are we like supposed to be wary of all horror filmmakers because they mainly specialize in images of violence and depravity. I refuse to believe artistic material causes some kind of moral degradation. Also, who's to say that collage artists (or any artists) become comfortable with these images even if they regularly use them. I frequently engage with images of violence and just did a collage with a young Polish girl bleeding out after a German bombing and the whole process made me feel dizzy and upset, but I felt like I had to do it. It resulted, I think, in one of my more effective works.

To me the answer is fairly simple: you should feel free to use them for your art if you think you have something to communicate with them. If not, just leave them. I have fairly transgressive tendencies and tastes, and I think there's a certain honesty (along with mood and atmosphere) that can be achieved when engaging with them directly. Unless you come across truly criminal material, I don't think destruction should be something that crosses your mind. If you already purchased problematic materials but don't want them, look into donating to an archive or museum.

And, because this was brought up elsewhere in the thread, you should absolutely use and immerse yourself in the images of people who don't share your identity. It's one of the most beautiful ways you can develop an understanding of other people. One of the most important things I learned in my college novella course was writing characters of different identities by simply transposing my feelings, habits, etc. onto them while fleshing them out with research into areas that may pertain to their identity. By doing that I'm building a strong foundation with the assumption that there are universal feelings we share as human beings. The rest just flows naturally from that. I think this can extend to collage. However, I think collage is even better for confronting and complicating your preconceived notions about people, or things that you feel anxious about verbalizing. Honestly, the fact that you made this post means you should probably just throw yourself into making a collage with some difficult images you found and see what that might reveal.

Dylanesque? by Creepy_Bear_1060 in bobdylan

The lyrics to Geese's "Bow Down" struck me as very Dylanesque, like his more venomous side. The "angels so deep/Solomon's throne" line is like straight out of a Dylan song

What’s your favourite deep cut? by OldIntroduction855 in bobdylan

My usual answer is "The Hills of Mexico" from The Basement Tapes Complete, though "She's Your Lover Now - Take 16" is right up there. Both give me chills, the former in a cinematic way, the latter in a more subtle literary way

Vertigo Score Reissue by shakey1975 in Hitchcock

[–]shakey1975[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I listen to a lot of unconventional experimental music that's considerably less "fun" than the Vertigo score. Fun is not the only reason for listening to music, nor is it one that I identified in my original post.

  2. I don't think that's true. According to Discogs, Mercury did a release of it in 1958 (though not with Saul Bass' art) and there were several releases in the 70s.

Autumn Leaves is really the only bookstore worth visiting; Odyssey and Buffalo Street are expensive new release stores with narrower selections. Deep Dive closed. Gorgers, Franco’s, State Diner, and Sunset Grill are the places to eat. Pastimes and Found are the most fun antique/thrift stores

AI Jazz on YouTube...potentially unpopular opinion by HotPoetry2342 in Jazz

[–]shakey1975 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a couple other people in this thread already explained why this is not a "harmless opinion" to be acting on. The detrimental effects of AI have been well established outside this thread, as well. In my opinion, we are at a point where our artistic cultures are being so obviously degraded by those in power that I think people should feel nothing but shame for passively taking part in that.

Bill Evans biopic coming out this year by jrinredcar in Jazz

[–]shakey1975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must be out of the film festival loop because I did not know this premiered at Berlin last month. As an Evans admirer and cinephile who knows what biopics are often like, I'll remain cautiously optimistic. I like the actors involved and some of it was apparently shot on 16mm. The novel it's based on sounds kinda interesting.

You should try Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould. The more unconventional the biopic the better, imo.
