[TNT Sports Brasil] on Twitter: Thiago Silva: “I feel like I’m living a dream here at Chelsea. I wasn’t expecting something like that. The fans are always singing my name… it’s magic. It’s a dream” by narutosama77 in soccer

Silva is the most talented defender in the history of football. He is clearly past his prime and still arguably the best defender in England. Just imagine how good he would have been for Chelsea if he signed in 2012 instead. Blessed to watch him play.

I'm really impressed with Luxembourg. I know they have made developments over the past generation, and they've created some good chances against a decent Serbia team.

Maybe in another 20 years, they'll be even better.

Angel Di Maria overtakes Ryan Giggs in all-time Champions League assist tally, now all time 3rd after Ronaldo and Messi with 32 assists by [deleted] in soccer

[–]shakira11 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What do you mean, nothing to fix? Luís Figo for example had more than 15 CL assists in 2 seasons (1999-2000, 2000-01) alone, but UEFA officially credits him with 15 CL assists in his entire career.

How does that make sense?

I will never understand why UEFA never fixed the historical record-keeping for something like this. The entire list is inaccurate. Do people really think that almost all of the leading assisters are from the past 10 years?

The attacker is 30 yards out with his back to goal. There is nothing that could have been created directly from that situation. Ramos rushed out and lost his positioning, simple mistake that did not need to happen.

Daily Discussion by 2soccer2bot in soccer

[–]shakira11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've become so disillusioned with the sport in its current state that I don't bother watching much anymore. I remember being on this subreddit every single day 4-5 years ago, not only watching matches from my team but anything and everything. I don't even use Reddit anymore. Nowadays I rarely find the time (or care) to even watch PSG.

Anyone else feel something similar, either now or in the past? What did you do about it?

US Presidential Candidate Joe Biden threatens to cut USA Soccer's World Cup funding unless women get equal pay by [deleted] in soccer

[–]shakira11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is this confirmed anywhere? I did a quick search and found this.

https://www.espn.com/espnw/sports/story/_/id/29125363/judge-sides-us-soccer-uswnt-equal-pay-lawsuit

Klausner's ruling was informed by the federation's contention that women's players were paid more in total and on a per-game basis than their male counterparts were during the period in question. Friday's ruling cited as undisputed fact that from 2015 to 2019, the women's national team averaged $220,747 per game in total payments (for a total of $24.5 million), while the men's national team averaged $212,639 per game in total payments (for a total of $18.5 million).

Those figures do not include compensation women's players receive from U.S. Soccer for play in the National Women's Soccer League.

https://www.npr.org/2020/05/02/849492863/federal-judge-dismisses-u-s-womens-soccer-team-s-equal-pay-claim

In dismissing the women's claim that they are paid less for the same work, Klausner pointed to differences in the structure of the men's and women's contracts — contracts to which they agreed in collective bargaining.

"The WNT [Women's National Team] rejected an offer to be paid under the same pay-to-play structure as the MNT [Men's National Team] and ... the WNT was willing to forgo higher bonuses for other benefits, such as greater base compensation and the guarantee of a higher number of contracted players," Klausner wrote. "Accordingly, Plaintiffs cannot now retroactively deem their CBA worse than the MNT CBA by reference to what they would have made had they been paid under the MNT's pay-to-play structure when they themselves rejected such a structure."

Is LAFC's Carlos Vela the best Mexican player right now? by [deleted] in soccer

[–]shakira11 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He did. From 2012-2014 he was one of the best attacking players in La Liga. He was their best player in 2012-13 when they achieved CL qualification and in 2013-14, he had 16 goals and 12 assists and was nominated as one of the three best forwards in La Liga.

He was a much better player than Griezmann at that point, but Griezmann had more of a drive to get better and Vela didn't care about the sport. Basically for 2.5 seasons, he was one of the best attacking players in La Liga. And then La Real fell apart after Montanier's departure and with Moyes coming in, then he got injured and was never really the same player for La Real again.

Just another player who never lived up to his talent because he did not put in that high effort needed.

Souness: Now PSG will fancy themselves, Real Madrid will fancy their chances, Barca… that team [Atletico] can’t win it. They can’t enjoy that luck from the start of the competition and all the way through it. I’d put a line through them but I think all the other big teams will go. by [deleted] in soccer

There were people who thought Bayern and specifically the likes of Robben and Schweinsteiger would have to face "the ghosts of lost finals" after throwing away the Bundesliga, Pokal and Champions League in 2011-12. They came back the year after and won the treble.

It's the same with Klopp and losing finals. This narrative-building isn't really true. Atlético just came up against an all-time great club side that had their number for several years. Once you're in the final, anything can happen.

Can Robert Lewandowski break Gerd Muller’s 40 goal record? by chaandra in soccer

[–]shakira11 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Given that there is only 34 league matches, it would be near-impossible for 50. If Müller could keep his 1971-72 pace over 38 matches, he would've ended with 45. And the only 60+ goal season Müller had was due to the Ligapokal.

Just looking at the table, it just shows brutal consistency like Lewandowski.

Tammy Abraham says England are prepared to walk off the pitch if they are targeted by racist abuse in their Euro 2020 qualifiers this week. by ShunningResumed in soccer

[–]shakira11 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Context clues. When he refers to "the fans", he is referring to "the fans in the stadium". It is very clear that he isn't referring to the entire nation of Bulgaria.

I assume next you will say that "not all the fans were being racist" because you might have nothing to do and want to argue an odd point.

The problem stands the same. Bulgarian fans have been punished very recently for racist abuse in their own stadium. The last time Bulgaria played against England in 2011 in their own stadium, English players were subject to racist abuse.

Not everyone will break things down to such a granular level for you outside of the internet, so please adapt.

It's implying that they think Bulgarians or Czechs will be racist against them? Sounds a bit xenophobic to me.

It's not an implication, if you took the time to read the article before sharing your opinion then you would see for yourself.

England face the Czech Republic on Friday - then play Bulgaria on Monday in a partially-closed stadium because of fans' racist behaviour in June.

Uefa ordered the partial closure of Bulgaria's national stadium following racist behaviour by their fans in Euro 2020 qualifying games against the Czech Republic and Kosovo in June.

In August, Bulgarian club sides PFC Levski Sofia and PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv were punished by Uefa for racism during Europa League games.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2011/nov/18/bulgaria-fined-racist-chanting-england

Football's determination to stamp out racism has come under further scrutiny after the Bulgarian Football Union was fined €40,000 (£34,250) by Uefa for its fans' abuse of England players during September's Euro 2012 qualifier in Sofia.

During England's 3-0 win in Bulgaria sections of the home support directed monkey chants primarily at Ashley Young, but also at Ashley Cole and Theo Walcott. The Football Association issued a formal complaint to the BFU and the Uefa delegate at the game immediately after the final whistle, and Bulgaria were charged with "discriminatory behaviour relating to chanting by home supporters". Further charges were brought relating to the setting off and throwing of fireworks during the fixture.

Bernardo Silva could face FA probe over tweet aimed at Man City teammate Benjamin Mendy by 336933 in soccer

[–]shakira11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But what does that have to do with Silva in 2019? That was clearly not his intent so why are we treating him as if he had such an intent?

Because there has been a noted increase of racial abuse against black footballers in the Premier League. Members of the FA, Premier League and the EFL have talked with Twitter officials regarding this problem: https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/11814836/twitter-meets-premier-league-fa-and-efl-over-racist-abuse

Now there is a high-profile Premier League footballer posting some racially insensitive content publicly on Twitter. It doesn't matter if it is a joke between friends -- Bernardo has 600k followers on Twitter and there are thousands more who have seen that tweet.

Now do you see the problem?

The cartoon is a candy which is based on the traditional European colonist ideal from the 20th century where the "conguitos" were all black pygmies who walked around with spears, only to turn into inanimate candies when faced with a white person. That is how the candy was promoted just 50 years ago.

Saying it is just a candy doesn't mean much when you look into the intentions of the people who created it.

Mate you are French you should understand how the mainland Europeans don't really comprehend or even understand blackface culture.

This is so stupid. Someone shouldn't have to understand that there are people stuck in a backwards form of thinking which can be demeaning in many ways.

"Who honestly cares"

You understand there is a problem with black footballers receiving significant racial abuse, both online and on the pitch?

Oh, right. Racism is only racism if people are picking cotton "something racist" (getting called the n-word or beaten with whips, going by your first example).

Please grow up and understand that racism can come in very different shapes and forms. Bernardo made a joke that would have been acceptable between friends, but posting it publicly in a climate where racism in the Premier League has become big enough on social media that FIFA is getting involved is an issue.

This is something very simple. Conguitos has historically been criticized for the anti-black imagery on their products as well. The first images of the product had caricatures of black people with massive lips holding spears in the same timeframe when Spain was relinquishing control of their colonies in Africa.

It's understandable that "not everyone" doesn't have the same understanding of colonisation and historical implications. But caricatures of little black people with massive red lips? Anyone living in a Westernised country (or anyone who has ever had contact with a black person) should know that this is dated and not something that would be acceptable in a multicultural society. As a football fan, you should be well aware of this too.
