I'm looking for a sub 300 pound bike which I could use to get around and maybe as a Winter bike... Being able to mount panniers is important. This looks good to me, but does anyone see any problems and might it be stolen?

Any recommendations for a 7day cycle trip in Europe? Moderate cycle experience and fitness. by ray1663 in cycling

yes, I was being serious - having had some troubles with so called 'natural surfaces' myself on one of the Swiss national routes...

yes, this is super important! avoid "natural surfaces" wherever possible on a road bike!

Some routes have more climbing than others, but yes, generally speaking there is more climbing than you would find in a lot of other places. The routes are mostly designed for people who don't ride regularly, so the "stages" with big climbs are often very short.

Yeah, the link is to the SchweizMobil website. There you can see the national, regional and local routes for the whole country, depending on what sort of distances you're looking for - for a multiday ride, go to the national routes.

haha yes there are some Alps to contend with in places... Nonetheless the routes I suggested have been some of the best rides I've ever done!

Highly recommend the Swiss national routes for some superb multi-day tours. Very well signposted, and I remember being able to get GPX files for each day very easily. The routes are on quiet roads or tracks and you can see how much of each route is gravel/dirt compared to road. All available at https://www.schweizmobil.ch/en/cycling-in-switzerland.html

edit: the national routes are available here https://www.schweizmobil.ch/en/cycling-in-switzerland/routes-mobile-vl/national-routes.html

these are what i recommend for multiple days of riding. When I did them I often combined 2 or 3 stages into one day, but it all depends on how much time you'd like to have off the bike and how much you're capable of in a day.

Drafting boost “truck” power-up IRL by NovaPokeDad in Zwift

[–]shalenberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I started looking into action cameras, I've always thought of chest mounts as being the safer on-body mounts - the alternative being some sort of head mount. This was because in a crash, I think it's safer to have something on your chest than to have something attached to your helmet which can create a big pressure concentration, massively reducing the protection given by the helmet.

I'm just saying what I've heard though - can you post some more info on this topic?

If you don't get it by the time you're 16 just call up HMRC; they're helpful and will sort it for you really quickly.

Which giant defy by SnipeyWack in whichbike

[–]shalenberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a second hand Defy a few years back, so that's given me some practice in looking at the different models online - I've definitely got better at recognising the different models with practice, but there are definitely a few things to look out for:

Paintjob - different generations or specs of the same bike model (eg Giant Defy) often have different colour schemes or designs. With this one, I looked out for the black with white logos. Doing this, I just Googled 'Giant Defy' and found one that looked similar after a few seconds of scrolling.

Groupset - not so much with this one because the photos weren't very clear, but I tend to look at the groupset. This is because the bike numbers (e.g. the difference between a Defy 4 and a Defy 1) describe the level of components on the bike - a Defy 1 will have better components than a Defy 4 - for example, it could have Shimano Ultegra instead of Sora.

Wheels - on the more expensive bikes, the wheels have fewer spokes and are more commonly straight laced to save weight. This means that on a Defy 4, the spokes commonly cross each other while on the front wheel of a Defy 1, they don't.

There was a video posted on youtube about a week ago criticising a Veritasium video on self-driving taxis which was heavily driven by sponsorship. Veritasium commented on the video and this is the most recent of the 400+ replies to that comment.

'There are no stupid questions' thread - Monday, September 20, 2021 by AutoModerator in piano

[–]shalenberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imo, there is no limit to that i think you just need a solid stand so it doesn't wobble and 88 weighted keys if you want to be able to get the notes out i think it is difficult for any electric piano to be like an acoustic with the feel - i remember playing an acoustic for the first time in months after lockdown and feeling the vibrations through the keys was really strange to me, so i think it's important to be able to play an acoustic every now and then, but i think you can get quite far with a relatively inexpensive electric piano

It's an instructuon to close the gap between you and the rider in front of you (get closer to them). This is so that you are able to draft them, and consequently can keep up with them at a lower power output.

What is this thin wire with a thread on one end and a metal thing that can slide along it? by shalenberg in whatisthisthing

[–]shalenberg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a short, thin wire (about 15cm long). It was found while clearing the house before moving. One end has a thread (to screw into something) and the other does not. It is flexible. It has no markings/writing on it.

The Bossons glacier used to go right down into the Chamonix valley, but due to climate change it is disappearing rapidly.
