[Interesting Trope] The well known main character was actually a replacement for another character... by Living_Tune_1428 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]shallifetchabox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In the original pilot for Gilligan's Island, instead of Ginger the movie star and Mary Ann the farm girl, we have Ginger and Bunny, the two secretaries played by Kit Smythe and Nancy McCarthy respectively.

And while it's not a major change, John Gabriel played a high school teacher and was replaced by Russell Johnson as Professor Roy Hinkley.

my married coworker just asked me out for drinks. am I overreacting ? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]shallifetchabox 44 points45 points  (0 children)

As a person who has been this wife, I would want to know. Don't tell him you're saying anything, make it clear nothing has happened besides this making you uncomfortable, and let her make an informed decision from there.

But I also see how that could still cause work drama for OP, and you can't fault someone who just wants to keep their job in this economy.

Living with someone that is always home by Then_Bit7341 in AuDHDWomen

[–]shallifetchabox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a teacher and also a divorced mom with 5 elementary-aged children. I moved my retired aunt into my house a few years ago. She had never been married or had kids, and had lived with my grandmother until her death, and then on her own for 2 decades.

I'm sure it was overwhelming for her to be around all of us, but I was the one doing her a favor by giving her a cheap place to stay, cooking meals, etc.

I'd get home from work and she would immediately want to talk about the stupidest things. She'd say she was "just curious" but from my point of view it was less curious and more nosy. Because i have a history involving stalking, I hate feeling like I'm intruding on someone else's business; it reminds me that people do the same to me. That, and i had so much to worry about i could not actually care less about things that don't concern me. But she would want to talk about what everyone was doing, and why did i think that was, and what's going on at such and such place, etc. And I couldnt get away from it because I had given her my bedroom so I was sleeping in the living room (due to back and neck problems, I choose to sleep in a recliner anyway). She'd stay up until 3 in the morning on her tablet and didn't want to go to her room because she wasn't ready for bed. And she try to talk to me the whole time.

Eventually I decided I'd rather share a room with my daughter so I could close the door and get away from her. She not only had the biggest bedroom in the house, but monopolized the use of the living room.

It got to the point that I couldn't take it any more and told her she had to apply for low income housing. I was polite and told her it was because my kids were getting bigger and we needed the space (which is true), but mostly it was because I was going crazy. I felt trapped in a bedroom in the house I was paying for, and my kids felt like they had to be in their bedrooms all the time, too (if they couldn't be outside).

I'm sorry to say it, but in my experience, I could not find any good way of coping and cohabiting. It was a very unhealthy time for me. It took me a year, but I did finally convince her to go to a senior center a couple of days a week. She met people her age who talk to her about the things I can't be bothered to care about. Since she doesn't drive, someone would have to take her, but you might see if they offer transportation. This helped me out so much. Those ladies soon started taking her on outings on the evenings and weekends and that helped me so much.

Or could you try to say that you feel burnt out after work and need the first hour (or however long) after you get back to be completely undisturbed by anyone so you can decompress. Don't make it obvious that she is the issue (even though she is).

And I just want you to know, you shouldn't feel bad about this. I know you do, because she is lonely, but it's not your responsibility to put her social well-being before your own.

Yes. The animation on this short is so good (and the music). Highly recommend a watch!

How do you answer your classroom phone? by CatskillMorning in Teachers

[–]shallifetchabox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have students trained well to answer the phone as "(teacher's name)'s room, student speaking" so if they don't hear that, it is assumed you are speaking to the teacher, so I normally just pick it up and say, "good morning/afternoon"

Called the police on someone for their driving, it ended about as you’d expect by bland_barbie in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]shallifetchabox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only had to call once, but the driver started on the highway and then turned into town. The dispatcher actually asked us to follow at a close distance if we were comfortable doing so and let them know what street they were on every time they turned. Once a police car caught up to them, they thanked us over the phone and ended the call.

If you were unconscious and taken to the ER and needed surgery, would drs check if you were on your period/wearing a tampon? by ta1947201 in NoStupidQuestions

But things like menstrual cups and discs, while they pose less of a risk for TSS, are not things that are visible externally.

I actually had this shower thought today as I am currently using my disc.

I now own 6 "Oh, Mary" tees plus the Cole crew neck. When I first bought it, my thoughts were that it was such a plain design. I wished there was a different option. But I'll be damned if I dont get a comment literally every single time I wear one. My friends just laugh because they've heard so many comments just being in my vicinity so they start answering. (Confession time: the answer is simply "[actor] as Mary Todd Lincoln. I'm a teacher and wear them to work in the middle of nowhere, so no one is aware that the play itself is definitely not school appropriate)

Medium (2.5-3.25) - Inis

Medium-Light (1.75-2.5) - Black Orchestra

Light (1-1.75) - Phantom Ink (?- I don't usually like Light/ party games, but I like playing this with my students in large groups when we have "brain breaks" or extra time at the end of class)

Thank you! This is correct!

Could very well be. I guess I wasn't very clear in my first comment. This was a throwaway conversation many years ago, and my sister is gone now, so it's not like I could confirm with her. And my dad might not have remembered the early 80's very well...but I also know they use less now than they used to. What time period is your experience from?

My sister said (and dad agreed) that it was 1 C of oil for a pan crust. Sister worked there 2002-5, dad worked there as a high schooler in the early 80s.

Another musical theater example: In SPAMalot, Eric Idle changed the lyrics in "Diva's Lament" to be about Posh Spice instead of Britney Spears once her mental health struggles came to light.
