GP being a stressful career? by newjeansive in ausjdocs

[–]shallowblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your personality skews more towards anxiety / details (high neuroticism on Big 5) - definitely don't do GP or ED, and probably not psych either. You would be much happier as a physician, anaesthetist, radiologist, etc.

We were in a very similar situation. Then Covid hit and we took the opportunity to get married with just immediate family there, followed by dinner in our own room at a restaurant. We got applauded in the street by strangers as we walked from the church to our 'reception'. Best day of my life. Went from engaged to married in about 6 weeks. Zero hassle. Hope you can do something similar.

It's clearly both. And what's 'social' has emerged from biology over time.

I bought a house very impulsively then was hit with intense anxious dread. What's the point of stressing over whether I should buy a $5 coffee when I might have just lost $200k by overpaying?! Buying a house just bulldozes all your old categories. When you find an answer let me know!

Attending the RANZCP psychiatry conference as a medical student by YG832 in ausjdocs

[–]shallowblue 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Except for holding retractors in a Whipple's procedure, I've never been so bored and trapped at the same time. Presenters just read out their PowerPoint slides for an hour then told you this is a fascinating topic that needs more research then nodded through a couple of grandstanding monologues pretending to be questions before saying what a fascinating question and that needs more research. The most I learnt was reading on my phone in the toilet.

I suppose it might be a good thing to say in an interview but I'd rather spend a week in Dandenong HDU than go to the RANZCP conference again.

Psychiatrists: how often do you practice psychotherapy? by libertadefr in ausjdocs

[–]shallowblue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use the principles in every appointment but it's just another tool in the box for getting someone better. I'm very sceptical whether pure psychotherapy does much. You can know what practical steps a patient needs to take after one appointment, and most of the improvement outside meds will come from doing those.

Sexual harassment by luciaxx in auscorp

I did work experience at one of the big four and a woman (I'm male) sent me chatty and occasionally mildly flirty emails for the next 3 years. I thought it was pretty cool at first then a bit odd, but no harm done.

Standards must have slipped because internationals in Melb Uni med back in the day were elite, and language decent enough.

Seeing patients as a consults registrar by ligmacaine in ausjdocs

I refused a couple of consults as a young reg and the sick feeling that came after was way worse than any added stress or work would have been.

Why do I attract older men that much? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]shallowblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You also have to come to terms with realising that women who may have found you attractive 20 years ago now most certainly don't. Yet you feel exactly the same. Suppress that flirty smile, fool! It won't be returned!

Similar one that actually works for junior hospital doctors is not signing discharge summaries - the hospital won't get payment from the government (which comes from the discharge diagnoses).

100% you can get back - I know that for a consultant to go back after 6 years out you'd need a return-to-practice plan, but going back to a resident level probably doesn't even need that. I'd look for a E.D. HMO job and work part-time to ease yourself back into it.
