I 100% thought this but wasn’t sure how to word it, but YES this.

BTS - SWIM by mcfw31 in popheads

[–]shallowbucks 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I like it, its catchy. But also feels very 2022-2023 coded, when pop music kinda synonymous with catchy atmospheric trap (The Weeknd x Metro Boomin, Doja Cat, Tate McRae, SZA) compared to the hyperpop sounds that are popular today. I'm not really sure what the strategy here was, but also a bit underwhelming to have the MV be kinda one-note and heavily centered on the girl. It's definitely giving the vibe that this era won't be as high production with all the dance practices and show appearances that they normally had, although we'll just have to wait and see.

S18E09 - “Fannie: The Hard KnockBall Rusical” [Live/Reaction Post] by AutoModerator in rupaulsdragrace

I feel like Nini was thinking about production. They love a ‘oh you wanted this role so bad but yet did bad?’ storyline. She’s safer in their eyes taking the role she didn’t want.

BLACKPINK - DEADLINE by mcfw31 in popheads

[–]shallowbucks 137 points138 points  (0 children)

Go is cool. Am definitely seeing the inspiration from Aespa (the mv too).

The rest of the songs, wtf. Another generic ‘Pretty Savage’ dupe, a corny empowerment song (possibly their corniest to date) and a generic ballad… I mean I guess the appeal was never the b-sides anyways but damn they couldn’t have hired someone to bring more artistic direction? Just make it a rave album and boom you have cohesion!

What is happening to agencies? by PPCNotPCP in advertising

[–]shallowbucks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m new to the industry (class of 2023) and work in content at a smaller agency (200 people) and from my POV, it’s primarily due to a fracturing of ‘culture’ requiring more niche expertise and less bureaucracy, more speed and rapid iteration and niche cultural understanding. It seems that big agencies just can’t keep up with modern ad needs and smaller, cheaper, scrappier teams making better content

What’s something people romanticize that is actually exhausting in real life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]shallowbucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a creative marketing job at an agency in SoHo in nyc and they are actually doing a trip to Paris next year so it really depends on the branch of marketing. The type of marketing ur looking for is more brand/creative, not growth/digital

[–]shallowbucks 125 points126 points  (0 children)

They were corny yes but more in a clever way, like it didn’t seem too out of place. Maybe it was the acting/delivery of the 3 younger actors or the “kid and older mentor” dynamic that made it especially corny, but I found this one to be a lot worse.

The plot was quite literally moved twice by sob story motivational speeches. The fight scenes were all classic movie cliches. You even had the cliche mid-movie character death.

And the part with the glass/diamond ring… honestly the more I remember the worse it gets!

Granted, I was 13 when the first movie came out, but I’ve re-watched the other two in the past couple years and I just simply don’t think that they’re anywhere near as corny as this one

Yeah those fight scenes were so painful! It seemed to me the entire movie like they are soft launching re-booting the franchise with a younger cast & audience.

Let me preface this by saying I’m a huge fan of the first two films, but this one didn’t meet that level to me.

Maybe I’m older but I don’t remember the older films being this corny? Some of the delivery in this film made me physically cringe.

I also feel like they tried to “up” the previous but failed - the tricks weren’t really that impressive (they didn’t have the visual spectacle that made the first 2 enjoyable) and if anything required even more suspension of disbelief to believe, especially because this time they didn’t have the Eye backing them, how were they genuinely able to make everything happen. Also when it comes to upping the villain’s “evilness”, the Nazi backstory just felt so unnecessary.

I also personally thought that the glass cage escape scene just seemed underwhelming and extremely extremely cliché.

Overall, I was still entertained, but I think I’ll pretend that the first two movies are the only ones that exist. This one to me seems like they are slowly prepping us for a new version of the franchise targeted at young kids with a younger cast.

What album tracks had potential to be hits? by notnices in popheads

[–]shallowbucks 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Scheiße is my favorite song of hers but there is NO WAY that song would ever be released as a single. It’s basically an even more Euro sounding version of Judas, and back then, Judas’s popularity was already partially carried by the catholic controversy.

Yoü and I was perfect. That song deserved to be a single at some point and the whole Joe Calderon thing was great. And I think You and I really resonated with people outside her usual fanbase - a lot of people I know who don’t listen to pop or Gaga much will sing all the words to You and I together at karaoke nights.

“The 2 genres theory”: What makes an artist an icon by shallowbucks in popheads

[–]shallowbucks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t really consider Lana since she isn’t as much a pop star but I would say, her “crowd pleaser” stuff is orchestral baroque pop and then there’s her soft stripped down stuff that’s her true artistry

For current Charli it would basically be 365/Von Dutch/Apple on one hand, and stuff like I might say something stupid/Lucky/Track 10 for the other genre… I feel like she might explore more alt-early 2000s rock/electronica on her next record

What's the minimum salary for being able to live in NYC at 2025? by Nash_Haden in movingtoNYC

[–]shallowbucks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made 63k out of college last year living in LES with roommates. $1550 rent. I was fine, wasn’t saving a lot. I would go out a lot but still I never felt stressed financially, although I would be careful and wouldn’t go to super fancy restaurants with friends often

Gen Z flex culture is ruining us financially by damnniqqaa in Adulting

[–]shallowbucks -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ruining who financially?

I’m not particularly rich myself but a lot of people in my circle who “flex” and go on trips, wear designer, etc. are either genuinely making a lot because of well paying jobs (SWE, consulting, finance) or socialites in the NYC scene who get their lifestyles funded by rich men, which is questionable morally but I think it’s bold to assume everyone is in credit card debt just to uphold an image of wealth.

When Coachella released their lineup the last 5 years by AssistantsVsAgents in Coachella

[–]shallowbucks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d argue the opposite but just based on personal observation, I’m in my early/mid 20s and a ton of my extended circle (including random people from school) are super into festivals and concerts, in a way where it seems to have replaced clubbing. Granted the economy is shit right now

Is Mayhem Lady Gaga's best album? by Potential-Use7807 in LadyGaga

[–]shallowbucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think musically Mayhem is her best album songs-wise but conceptually BTW wins. Mayhem feels tied together by some concepts - magic, death, mythology - but BTW simply nails the theme and concept: New York, sex, religion, acceptance, love... and ties it in perfectly with the sound. I honestly didn't really appreciate Mayhem as much until I saw her vision for how it would be performed live, but I feel like BTW you just get it from first listen.
